RTÉ also put Cork v Roscommon on the player while broadcasting Tyrone v Dublin on two different channels.

Serving their own agenda as usual.

Nobody complaining about the old people in nursing homes etc that couldn’t watch Cork v Roscommon
It was on the RTE New Now channel which is FTA I believe

Nope. RTÉ news now had Tyrone v Dublin as Gaeilge.

RTÉ Player while not ideal is available everywhere and is Chromecast compatible. It is not comparable to sky sports in any way.

TG4 probably have the most experience at this stage, and their coverage is usually top notch. They show practically every other grade and competition so it seems unfair they are shut out when it comes to the championship. Greed by the GAA I guess.

I dont actually think its greed as im sure the money from Sky is about the same as they would have got off TV3. Now i may be wrong in this but its what im led to understand

You’re missing the point. RTÉ had the rights for a game and chose not to broadcast it on tv.

How many of the 140,000 people in nursing homes Joe Brolly is referring to in his tweets today have access to 1) the internet, 2) a device to watch the player on and 3) (optional of course) a chromecast?

Was the broadcast in the north via the player geo blocked?

Well they are not necessarily being shutout, they are probably not bidding because they cannot afford it.

The stuff they show is niche and comes fairly cheap

It certainly would not have the draw of senior championship and thus would not be priced the same way.

For all those giving out about Sky be careful what you wish for.

The alternative might be Virgin Media Sport.
A subscription service not very widely available with very little content.and as a result poor value for money.

Well a lot of people wished the games off TV3 and now look where we are.

From memory, the Sky deal was sold as a great opportunity to give the diaspora access to games. Turns out they aren't too bothered. And the rest of the UK aren't bothered either.

RTE showing less hurling and a bit more football and we'd all be happy.

This people in nursing home stuff is truly laughable isn't it.

Similar to the complete bollocks about "but what about the farmer in ballygobackwards with no Sky who wants to see X game". If people are that arsed about getting to see the game, they will get to see the game. And I'm speaking from a background with immediate family in rural Donegal. And the part that's about as rural as it gets tbh.

And as for anyone listening to Joe Brolly (a paid employee of RTE). Well I don't know what to say to you.

Sky have been a breath of fresh air and if it's a choice (as it will be from here on in) between watching on Sky or RTE I will pick Sky every time because the offering and the product is far better. This might change whenever RTE put Spillane Brolly and O'Rourke out to pastures and get some modern voices who are up to date with the modern game and not just churning out rhetoric and bluster.

We probably have the most amount of games being broadcast and still people complain. Sky do a great job of broadcasting the games and are putting money into the grassroots.

Oh great, you have Sky subscription figures for the UK and the delta between now and before Sky started showing GAA

Post them up please and we can have a fact based debate about how many in the UK are tuning in.

If RTE was a bit more positive about the game I could take on board their argument but they are the most negative sports broadcaster towards a game that I know of.

Sky is a little bit bland I won't deny but every game in given a lot of respect an analysed in good detail. They get in do the job no messing about. Enjoy what they do. The Connacht Semi Final is examined in great detail, just as much as the All Ireland final.

TG4 is the same. Just get on with the games in hand. Coverage mostly fair.

Even the streaming sites like Electric Ireland/Provinces/County Board level is extremely good and even handed.

Last weekend the Minor Quarter finals and Under 20 semi final showed exactly what Football has to offer.

RTE is the biggest TV influencer in the game and its biggest critic. Every time a good game is on someone will say if only every game was like that and onlookers will say the same on twitter/forums etc.

Its good that there is alternatives out there to challenge these outdated opinions.

I just watched back some of the pre game of the Tyrone v Dublin clash to see what Brolly might be saying about Mayo.

Good to see Cantwell tell him to stop interrupting and let Cooper finish his point.

Speaking of fact based what were the Irish Sky viewing figures for any Championship game this year? I've been asking for those from the start.

Most pundits are clueless. They only impress those with a relatively weak grasp of sport.
The pundits will tell you how great team A are and how weak team B are. Then team B beats team A and they change their tune.

Most pundits are wise after the fact which isn't really wise at all.

I want to see the game not pundits trotting out the obvious. And you can't hear the pundits in a pub anyways even if someone wanted to hear them.

    More than you I'd say.

Now they don't have the latest fancy touchscreen technology so beloved of the sky sports generation or failed managers like Gary Neville, but they do cover games in all parts of the country that Sky or RTE couldn't be arsed with. That's good enough for someone like me who wants to see the game rather than listen to a pundit.

The alternative might be Virgin Media Sport.
A subscription service not very widely available with very little content.and as a result poor value for money.

Simple matter is that the premise on which this was "sold" to Irish people by the GAA is -

    1. It was not about money.

    2. It was getting more people from abroad watching our games.

In terms of No.1, the GAA did the deal to put manners on RTE. The monetary difference on the first deal was negligible. The second deal that the GAA done with Sky was inexcusable as they had already seen the viewing figures. They were attrocious. Instead of hundreds of thousands watching a GAA game we now have less than 15k watching some of our native games, i.e. only the people who can afford to pay for this service.

In terms of point No.2, this was the biggest lie every sold. Previously the games were available to the diaspora via Premier Sports for a fraction of the price. The Sky broadcast channels themselves only demand a viewing share of less than 1%. Comparatively, the viewing share in Ireland was 37% when free to air. The Australians were actually given it for free and dropped it within a year.

The whole selling of this by the marketing mandarins within the GAA went against the ethos of the GAA. The GAA are meant to be get even the most casual viewer engaged, promote the game and get kids playing on the island of Ireland. They wont do that by sticking games behind a pay wall and raising ticket prices. Cricket was killed off in the UK the very same way.

The truth is that we have less than one tenth watching the game on a good day for Sky. On a bad day its a miniscule percentage of those that watched it when free to air.

I have posted extensively on the past, backed up with actual viewing figures as I feel so passionately about it.

Anyone who has a genuine love of the game and feels the same should take it up with their own County Board or through their club.

Here's a fairly recent article that sums it all up (Dr Paul Rouse, GAA historian has written extensively on this).

Out of interest, what was the price versus a Sky subscription?

Because before the GAAGO service, it was an absolute ripoff in the States. $20 per game for a really sh!t stream, or around $290 per year. And famously the stream broke for the entirety of the 2013 All Ireland Hurling Final. GAAGO shows at least twice the number of games for half the price and is much more reliable

Premier Sports was available on satellite on the same satellite position as the Sky Channels and the Free BBC's etc.

They broadcast every live GAA match shown in Ireland, including club games and league games shown on TG4, Setanta, TV3 and RTÉ.

The cost was £10 a month.

If you want to be depressed more, have a read.

Just because they cover the Sligo county final doesn't make the coverage top notch.
They are getting this for minimal and it fills a few hours for them on a Winters afternoon.

IMO their GAA coverage is top notch including that via their youtube channel, coverage of club games, league games, minor and under 20s championship too.

Laochra Gael,Seo Spoirt was excellent.Such a shame it was decommissioned.Their GAA documentaries are interesting, mar shampla Cora Staunton's odyssey to the land of Oz.

Bainim an taitneamh as an seirbhis gan aon dabht.

Many posters have praised their coverage in spite of their difficulties with the Irish language.

Perhaps the biggest criticism I can give against TG4 is that they spend a lot of money getting Digisat to provide the cameras and uplinks for the broadcast for the games they cover. These are filmed in 1920x1080. They then stick it through a broadcast encoder and output it on Saorview at 544x576i, so that it looks like it was captured with a Nokia 3310. Such a waste.

I know this because I watch the uplinks, rather than the Saorview output. Tg4 haven't a washer when it comes to paying for quality output on Saorview.

I dont agree with the Sky deal but watching on there is far better value than GAAGO,can get a 24 hours pass for €10
