What does the weather report say?
Is there any more snow promised?

Had a spin on the mountain bike earlier. Started in Rathfarnham in sleety rain, soon turning to hail around Rockbrook and where the snowline started.
Headed up past Tibradden Wood towards Glencullen. Took the Wicklow way route up to Prince Williams seat and got to 400m ASL but turned back as the going got to tough. Great to get up to untouched snow.

Thawing quite rapidly here at the moment, all the snow on the roads is very slushy right now, it will be a real nightmare when this lot freezes tonight!

The top layer of snow looks lovely but underneath is very watery. I just cleared my driveway and the footpath outside and the snow is melting/slushing fairly quickly. so when all that freezes, it won't be pretty any more!!

Just home after driving from Arklow to Galway. M11 to M50 on to M6 was all fine...only started getting dodgy once in Galway. There were long tailbacks at the M6 toll... which I presume will be like that for next few days. other than that it was all managable

If it stays snowing here in north east Kilkenny for another half hour it will have been snowing for 12 hours.
    It is light snow.

In 2009/10 the east got hammered. There was very little if any snow in the west or south. Temperatures we're low everywhere however. November brought massive snow to Dublin and a wicklow and even waterford but mid December brought more to the east with the South and west escaping the snowfall. They got a little near the end of the cold spell just after Christmas.

Today's snow is a short lived affair..always is with a North Westerly. The snow will have melted in most parts by Monday evening and certainly by Tuesday as the temperatures are set to hit 7 in the west.

Yes, there was light snow in dublin on Thursday but just a dusting.
That's not true, Tralee got a snowfall in late Nov 2010 and then had approx 2 weeks of lying snow up to Stephens Day 2010 of at least 3 or 4 inches at sea level and much more inland. I drove from dublin to Tralee on 23rd and it was snow all the way.

This aerial shot shows the coverage around that date.

Some streamer actvity in Wicklow Town at the moment. Mix of rain sleet and hail.

It's probably too mild for snow where I am in south Kerry but there are wonderfully looking full clouds rolling in and it's after getting very dark. Here's hoping.

Temperature at Valentia was 9 degrees this morning. Dropping all day and 4 degrees in the 3pm report.

Disappointed we’re not getting any snow in Kerry. Just a miserable day

Agreed there was a lot of snow in Kerry during that period

I am surprised that Dublin, Meath, most of Kildare and low lying Wicklow got very little snow. Even Blessington which normally gets hammered from all directions. Naas, Newbridge got zero.

    Unusual.

Currently -2 in south kildare ...plenty of surface water about. Roads in morning should be interesting. Still getting the odd flurry of sleet and light snow nothing sticking mind.

Nice amounts of snow in county Kilkenny today started raining for an hr or two so thawing and turning to slush in most places.

Below is the temperature graph from Valentia Observatory in Kerry. Shows the temp dropping consistently thru the day. Most areas across the country are currently below 2°C

It's freezing hard out there, any melted snow is turning back into ice. Roads got slippy very quickly while i was out. Cleared all the snow off the cars to make tomorrow morning somewhat easier

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,659 ✭✭✭Darwin

Expecting -8 or -9c tonight, I went out and put the car in gear and left the handbrake off just in case!

If the roads in the rest of Westmeath are anything like Athlone and in freezes tonight the Dept of Education should make an early call on school closures tomorrow,

Walked up Croghan Mountain to about 550 meters asl and had to turn back in driving snow and poor Visibility
Walking access is at the Raheen wind farm about a 10 minute drive from rainy Arklow
The entrance is about 350 metres asl
Loads of photos which I’ll add later but here’s two
The first one is from the entrance looking towards the mountain
The 2nd is of one of the wind mills

At that stage visibility was good but the weather really closed in an hour later and up at the highest point ,(snow there a good 8 inches)we walked to at that stage all that was missing was the track machine from the film the Shining and someone shouting... here’s....Johnny :D

Went out for a walk in Carlow town. It's hovering around 1c so slight thaw during the day with lying snow but that temp will drop like a stone with night fall.

Lots of lying slush/ice on the paths and roads which will freeze tonight.

Hope drivers heed the serious warnings about how treacherous the conditions are.
