Blimey, is it that time of year already?! Time files when you're having fun, I guess... :D

So here we are at the 13th series of Mir's chat show. To think that back in 2005, many people were wondering if she really had what it took to host a show like this - and now it's very much a summer institution. ;)

Of course, there were a few iffy years in the early part of this decade, with fewer guests from outside Ireland and fewer dresses in Mir's wardrobe. Fortunately, these have been put right in the last year or two - and it doesn't matter that the cheese has increased at the same time. Even if the show never quite returns to the glory years of the late noughties, here's hoping that it keeps up this good form. ;)

The line-up for the first episode of this series certainly doesn't look bad - featuring a Liverpudlian comedian and a true Irish sporting legend... :);)
Saturday Night with Miriam returns for a new series on RTÉ One this weekend with comedian and actor John Bishop among the guests.

Ahead of his Irish tour in the Autumn, Bishop will discuss his return to stand-up, his own chat show In Conversation With... and flexing his acting muscles in the ITV drama Fearless.

Also joining Miriam will be Dancing with the Stars finalist Denise McCormack. The Red Rock star will talk about her character in the TV3 series, her big breakthrough in Love/Hate and her hopes for the future.

Ahead of a new documentary about his life and career next Monday night on RTÉ One, Irish football legend John Giles will reflect on his time on the field and share some of his favourite stories.

Music on the night comes from Wyvern Lingo.

Saturday Night with Miriam, RTÉ One, 9.25pm

I do like that name, Wyvern Lingo. Yes, it comes from the name of the statue outside the Town Hall in Bray, where the ladies originally hail from - but it's a good name nonetheless. :)

Mustn't forget to point out that in this and the other episodes in this series, there's sure to be something nice for... everyone in the audience. :D;) Mustn't forget to keep an eye on the footage used for the viewer competitions, either - not only for when holidays are on offer, but when cash is on offer too, now that the €50 note has been redesigned. :D;)

And, of course, I mustn't forget these... :);)

The line-up is very poor for an opening show.......

It will be strange to have John Giles on sofa without Eamon Dunphy. I enjoy them, they're like an old married couple at this stage, they're so comfortable in each other's company. I particularly enjoyed the night they serenaded Miriam and each other.

It's hard to believe Miriam is 57, I thought she looked amazing at her daughter Alannah's marriage to Fiachra Breathnach recently. I'm convinced Mir isn't going to be in RTE for too much longer, her eyes are on the big job in the Áras. I wonder will Michael D oblige her by vacating the position after one term. I think he and Sabina are getting very comfortable up there in the Phoenix Park so maybe not.

While she is still co-presenting Primetime with David McCullagh, she seems (to me at least) to be pulling back a little from political programming. Following Pat Kenny's departure from RTE and the end of Frontline, she seemed like a likely successor but Claire Byrne took over that slot. I think this was deliberable, I believe Miriam wants to focus more and more on the soft focus radio/tv stuff...ahead of the next Presidential Election.

Finally, I wonder what colour Miriam's 'Quality Street' Dress will be this evening, we should probably have a poll GHG :D

Thanks GHG for delivering a splendid Mirgathread 2017 OP.

There's Something About Miriam and Tonight There's Something About ... RollerDerby

I always enjoy listening to John 'Gilesy' Giles, I wonder will he mentioned being dropped by RTE's Head Of Sport Ryle 'Tommy Booooowe' Nugent?

“In my negotiations with RTE Head of Sport Ryle Nugent last year, he made it clear to me that this was to be the final year of my full-time engagement with RTE.
“He said that this was designed to allow him to continue the requirement to plan and prepare for the future.

“This was perfectly understandable to me and I signed the contract which finishes after the Euro 2016 final in France in good faith.
“But I want to make it perfectly clear that I’m not retiring or even thinking about it.”

Mir would be a great President IMHO. :):);)

Back in 2013 she told the Examiner that she considered her happiest job in television to be working on This Is Your Life with Eamonn Andrews. (In the video below, her name appears at 25:06 - immediately after that of the programme's creator Ralph Edwards.)

If she did become Pres, I wonder if she would consider it her happiest job of all? :);)

I would love to hear John discuss his departure too but I can't honesty imagine Miriam being brave enough to allow him to criticise the Head of RTE Sport while on another RTE show.

I often wonder how Ryle Nugent progressed so quickly within the ranks of RTE, it must because they like to promote their brightest and their best

This picture was taken 35 years ago when Miriam appeared in a Avonmore Milk Advert. She really embraced 1980's fashion, that blouse has serious shoulder pads and puffy sleeves :D

Can I leave a complaint for Ryle Nugent (Head of RTE Sport) & GAA HQ here?

I'm so annoyed, I was looking forward to watching the Limerick V Kilkenny hurling match after a long day studying and it's not on the telly box  I'm so annoyed at the GAA for abandoning their grass roots supporters. Sky's viewership figures are tiny (37,000 approx) while RTÉ usually attracts a few hundred thousand viewers.

I'm a neutral so it's not the end of the world for me but spare a thought for 91 year old Mary Rea who can't follow her beloved Limerick Hurlers....

Before John Bishop was famous he used to be a regular panellist on The Panel with Dara O'Briain. It was his first Television exposure.

Then he got famous and he couldn't be bothered coming over.

Well Michael D did say that he would be a one term President..... And tbh, I dont think many of us thought he would make it to a second term. But he wouldn't be the first socialist who abandoned his ideals when a bag of silver was shaken in front of him.

I mean look at Joe Duffy.

I can't stand him. He sounds like a comedian doing an impression of a scouser.

    .

I'm livid with Duffy and Liveline at the moment...

Joe Duffy & Claddagh Green Limited had a fantastic week, I'm sure when he goes into re-negotiate his next RTE contract and salary increase he will be playing extracts from this week's programme featuring the Devereuxs.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/couple-split-up-over-nursing-home-applications-to-be-reunited-1.3135279

I remember reading years ago about an Ambassador's wife (can't remember the country) who said - 'The Irish are nice people but they lack a sense of moral outrage'.

I have to agree with her, why on earth aren't people outraged that Joe Duffy has more power to get people a place in a nursing home than the country's Ombudsman or clinicians? How is it fair that one man can get our government and State run organisations to magic up solutions within 24 hours? I'm delighted that the Devereaux are reunited, it's wrong that a couple married for 63 years should be separated but what about all the others out there who don't ring Duffy and place all their trust and patience in following the States bureaucratic processes only to be gazumped because Liveline and other media exposure created too much unwanted attention.

After Mir and after The Bee Gees tribute thing one of my favourite films of all time is on at 12.15am - The Day of The Jackal (the original, not the pointless remake).

Bizarrely, at the same time RTE2 are showing another classic, namely the epic WW2 Submarine film Das Boot. The RTE1 and RTE2 schedulers should meet up sometime and compare notes, it's insane putting similar programmes on the two channels at the same time.

Have they moved to a tiny studio? Seems like the audience is on fold up seats and reduced by about 70%. Perhaps the land sale is causing problems already.

Have they got the Guests on speed dial, we've already seen Bishop and Giles on either Tubridy or D'arcy's show

    Evening all :)

    Same 'Squeeze Play-doh' set :D

And Miriam still appears to be growing - she can't be killed with conventional weapons :D

In fairness Bishop is a matter of taste but is one of the biggest comedians around and John Giles is one of the best players Ireland have had.

RTE just don't have the money to get the A listers that Graham Norton does.

No, Harry. He'd be campaigning to have it outlawed and quoting figures of the numbers of fatal roller blade accidents in the last year. ...

    New-style €10s and €20s in the compo footage, but old-style €50s.

Well, to be fair, they are still in circulation for the time being... :D;)

IMO, camogie at Wimbledon is even less likely than Trump getting a second term. :o:o;)
