I believe the numbers are on the rise again here, already. The carry on in the city centre at the weekend (outdoor drinks parties) shows people aren't listening either.

    Right, thats enough.

End of discussion on the NZ shooting.

I'm not going to keep reading every post, of a subject I have no interest in, and then having to research it trying to find if something is true or not. So I've just deleted the last few posts.

    Move onto another topic.

With the recent cyber attack the HSE and HPSC says data is not available.
The carry on in the city centre at the weekend (outdoor drinks parties) shows people aren't listening either.
But the outdoor transmission rate is something like 0.1% according to HPSC.

This is recorded worldwide so not just in Ireland.

That has been happening since day one.

I've not gone into a shopping centre in the last 15 months and ever seen everyone "obeying" the social distance guidelines. At queues for checkouts, yes, but up and down the mall and aisles, nope.

According to the latest data (only up to 22nd May) there is 1.72 million first doses and 510,000 second doses administered. That could be up to 2 million 1st doses and 520,000 second doses based on trends as of today.

I realise asymptomatic people can still spread it, but if 80% of the population (average) are asymptomatic and the rest are being vaccinated and taking other precautions along with 35% having their first dose, and almost 11% fully vaccinated coupled with some level of distancing and continued mask wearing I don't believe the threat is as severe.

People may be taking it less serious, but I don't believe that to be a sense of recklessness, but more hope coupled with utter contempt for the last 15 months of lockdowns. IOW they've had enough.

The UK posted over 3,500 new cases today, but no deaths. Their vaccination rate is much higher, hence the quicker lifting of lockdowns.

DeBlasio, how is that defund the police thing working out for you?

What a donkey. He reckons with the economy opening up thing will quiet down as well as a functioning court system. Does New York not have the same system as California where minor crimes are dealt with in court with RoRs? Why bother arresting people for them to be back on the streets in a matter of hours?

His anti police stance, the high rate of police retirements and those quitting due to his policies coupled with the ultra liberal court system means people have nothing to fear or lose by committing crime, in New York.

    Chaps(and chapettes),

You know that whole low priced goods(<€22) exemption from customs duty & vat that is ending shortly?
Anyone know if that means the "gift" exemption is being removed too?

    July 1st it ends.

Gifts are exempt only if the value (of the gift, shipping, etc) is €45 or under. Anything over that amount and its subject to the requisite duties.

Customs miss stuff with some regularity, especially if it isn't sent via couriers.
Also depends on the value declared, etc.

I've had firearms come in, quite obviously being firearms and declared as such, with the correct import docs etc and not looked at, and a toy pistol which fired foam darts like this one seized for over a month as it was suspected of being a firearm...

I got a Wiebad mini stock pad in and they missed it, I had to go to the bother of ringing up customs to pay for it.

They automatically add duty/customs at point of sale.

Its actually handy cause you get the full price without having to work out anything or do anything.

Bought a N/S mirror for a car recently. €250 here. With duty and postage it worked at €76 all in. Second hand vs new, i grant you, but the second hand market in the UK is so much bigger and better you've little choice when looking for certain parts.

Of course it works the other way too. If it goes over €150 or €200 the price after all taxes can be as much as new here.

Buying stuff from America is eyewateringly expensive, Canada even worse. I thought the eu had free trade disagreements with all these countries ?

I'm not an economist/business person, or the likes so I've no idea how they work, but at a guess they may have a trade agreement, but that does not exempt taxes and duties.

This is just conjecture, but I'd say you'd only be exempt from import tax. I'd say you'd still have to pay VAT here and sales tax in America.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,448 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

What I meant was there is a free trade of goods but only in so far as the goods can flow into and out of both the EU and America.

Taxation is a different matter to importation.

When you buy something from the UK, now, you pay VAT in the UK and VAT here (depending on price Customs too). You can claim the VAT back in the UK as you've paid it here too, but few if any do (on an individual basis).

I think/believe the same applies to the States.
