How in the name of God the actual value of grass is 197 sterling a ton of dm is mind-boggling, take a strict grass based farm stocked at 3 cows per hectare, and 4000 litres a cow being got from grass.....
Assume 16 ton grass ha is being utilised which would be top 10%, ha of grass is worth apparently 3152 pound a year, if you take a average milk price of 23 pence including good solids for a Welsh farmer he would be looking at a total income of 2760 in milk sales, so from a start point their grass true worth value is minus nearly 400 pounds, before all the other fixed and variable costs that occur as part of running a dairy farm.....

Bufford will you please post the correct costings who had

Unbiased real results- no feed companies involved in the results which I posted on twitter

Buford will post it as it won't let me for some reason

I just tuned back into the conversation, Stan, I was going to put it up. Interesting comparison of costs with different grass yields.

Would that work out very similar to the welsh figures if their's included a land charge versus none for teagasc figures?
Cant see where the figure for grass value could possibly be coming from

Are lads getting maize into the pit at that? assuming 7.5t dm/acre that would 855 per acre, and that wouldn't be a bad yield either. What are figures are they using to come to 114?

Land charge would add 20-30 euro a ton depending on output

By the looks of it the Welsh study was based on about 6-8 ton dm per ha

    Maize is costing me

    200 acre land charge
215 acre for seed spray and plastic
240 acre for plough to pit
    150 acre for fert

So about 2000 a ha to grow on an average of 17.5t dm per ha so around 114 which is bang on the money

My first cut silage would be dearer

Contractor or yourself doing the machine work? much of a distance from pit? Charged about 950 an acre here into pit. Would you get those yields consistently?

You can't feed a cow with grass anyway, according to Throuw Nutrition you will struggle to get 12kg/dm into a Holstein cow and she won't graze by night at all. She will have to get 11/kg in the shed. About two minutes into the video.:D

Not sure if anyone uses the Desoan Teatfoam but just saw it on offer with Glanbia for 355 for 200 litres, not a bad price?

Changed pump on scrapers today, had put a new change over valve on them-400 euro- no difference, had gotten motor redone in the summer, no difference, new pump today , great job , twice as fast as before. He put the old changeover valve back on as it was ok. Should reduce electricity bill too

This is what I was trying to post.
Grass growth to 2/11..Haven't measured since but no change I'd say. Paddocks there need immediate reseeding.

Is that similiar to last year I thought 18t would be the absolute maximum for growth. I didn't measure properly this year, I missed a month in march/april ,june /July , Oct /Nov so it skews my figures . everything after field number 1 is very inaccurate (we divided fields in the summer so they didn't have spring and early summer grass recorded.

I can't open the link. Yes it's the same as last year. The range is 13 to 22 tonne. I can't see any point investing in rising top paddocks but I'd say we'd gain money by aggressively going after the lower ones.

They say each tonne is worth €220/tonne. By bringing up these we may be able to rise tonnes grown to 19/20. It's estimated that each extra tonne grown is worth €220 then it might be possible to add €200-300 profit per ha, well worth the investment.

I'm attaching a formula that'll help you calculate your tonnes utilised per ha

    Got this yesterday.
I presume the (1) beside the flaked maize means it's ingredient number 1?

No the order it's written in is the main ingredients proportion. The number 1 refers to the note written below it
