The weather models are still very varied as to the possibility of the cold snap, at the weekend. That should firm up Tues or Wed.

3 cent drop in milk price. The precedent has been set. Never saw it going up by 3 cent.

Where would you pick up a thermometer to check soil temps and how much would it cost

We use this one but there's cheaper that'll do the same job, Grasstec are charging €40 for this one

Was a very warm day yesterday. Ground Temp not far from you were higher than that sat

We check it every morning at 8 am, so it'd be the coldest part of the day

Ah I do have some land that wouldn't be as dry as most of the farm. About 25%. Bought a mole plough recently, hoping to do the whole farm this autumn with it. If it works It should be a brilliant job

That'd be my thoughts too, 6 degrees for an hour in the middle of the day wouldn't be a lot of good

I think they say "6 degrees and rising" . So your right, an hour in the middle of the day is not really suitable.
It's like pouring concrete in shutters, it has to be 4 degrees and rising.

I think you'll find that you would have more than an hour a day at tgat temperature

Not really. Soil is slow to warm up and slow to cool down. You need air temps at a good 10 degrees to get soil over 6 after a cold spell

Your getting that mixed up with water. Soil heats up and cools quickly compared to water. Hence why on a summers day it's cool at night and the lake could still be warm.

Anyway lads she's 6 degrees here 3ft in the ground since 10am

What be the lowest it went to, say during the cold spell? At 3 ft deep, does the heat come from above of below? Am I right in thinking a cave could hold 12c year round..

Going through plans with teagasc advisor this morning for new build. Instead of 2 agitation points you can run a slurry pipe- 6 inch pipe under ground along the outside of the tank and agitate through this from one agitation point. Iykwim. Did anyone do this?

I'm going for a new record this year.

I'm on my 4th bank manager in the last 14 months.

Back to square one again, giving stock numbers and all the rest of the info I've given them just a few months ago yet again:rolleyes:

Do I take this as a hint or what:confused:

Wouldn't be gone on that. Wall in the middle of the tank so you can drive slurry around would be better imv.
Big lump of silage wouldn't like being forced through a 6 inch pipe.

Some new tanks have pipes pumping air through the slurry all the time leaving them ready to spread anytime, have you seen this

Seen this before. Dairymaster said to keep it trickling all day. doesn't work. Farmer nearby set a compressor to come on for half an hour during the night and give it a good blast, better job.
