Very lucky here., the lad here could walk into a site in the morning and get work but he prefers farming.

Yes, to a point. If you have only one or two lads there won't be any problems. When you're depending on people to be responsible and independent it's a different story. I can't be up sides everybody all the time, otherwise I may as well do it myself.

I put in a card clock in/out system to stop the blackguarding with hours. Caught a girl clocking the card for a guy yesterday and again this morning. Said nothing, yet.
Now I've to go and buy a fingerprint electronic system...or fire them??

Edit. I consider anyone that fiddles hours to be guilty of theft.

Theres an iphone / android app that handles timesheets and logins, is location sensitive so tricky to fiddle.

Last place I worked had an i-pad which you had to tap in a pin number to clock in.. And then it took your photo.. Easy to see who was clocking in..

Its amazing what happens when you go out and look and treat good people well.

I've a man and his wife working here (Irish) that started with me nearly 25yrs ago at the age of fifteen. (Not the wife!). And many have tried to poach him from me over the years.
Irish, Brits, Aussies etc are no problem whatsoever, bar the dreamers of course.

It's the French that create all the bother. The education system starts them at age 13 to follow a certain career path. That then creates a 'them and us' mentality, coupled with French labour law...if they can manage/wangle to work 39hrs in a week, they are then entitled to a full day off, of their choice, with pay. Hence the constant fiddling of hours. The manipulation of hours also helps them to gain longer holidays, again with pay!

Any trustworthy employee gets treated very well indeed...anyone taking the p1ss and I come down on them like a ton of bricks. It's a two-way street.

What did they set you back?
What about someone plugging out the system?

The account sourced it, £259 sterling. Never though about unplugging it, but there is a battery included in it so the stored data is kept.

As you know , 5 a day was simply a marketing ploy. No basis in science.

As my late Father said when the doctor set him on a strict health regime, this diet food is all very well, but you wouldn't know whether to eat it before or after meals?

They'd both be getting the gate if it was me anyway..

Could you set up a cctv camera watching where they have to clock in, and if you've any suspicions just check then who really signed in/out at those times, and maybe just do random checks on it every so often to see if everything is matching up? Might be a cheaper alternative...

If the shortage of anyway decent workers is that bad, it doesn't seem like you can afford to let them go....

Our friendly milk processor is considering forcing suppliers to produce GMO free milk. In other words they won't pay extra...
This is nicely fitting in with a visit from Chinese buyers of our baby formula. I (stupidly) agreed that the visitors could come on farm for a nose about.

Anyhoooww good news folks...atm we're getting 33cpl + vat + 2cpl seasonality bonus (our own money, redistributed) for July/Aug/Sept. For Oct/Nov/Dec we're guaranteed a minimum of 35cpl + vat, which will probably be 36cpl but won't know until Sept.
I wonder will this translate into a hard market for dairy farms?

Does 36c translate to you loading on cows and driving on output ha?

We're fairly well stocked atm and trying to max production. If new season maize turns out as good as it looks, then yes we'll be loading up on cows.

Sure there's only one way to cure high prices...

Had a couple of calves with coccidiosis last week, I brought them home and vet came out. They are now finished their treatment, would you put them back out or leave them in for the rest of the season, the rest of the group are on nice aftergrass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,260 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Cocc. is a dirty thing, gut damage. They might need a bit of meal to stop them falling behind. If you had a sheltered spot close to the yard, good bit left in the grass season.

Tbh id keep them in, had one got it last year and kept her in. Plenty roughage and keep the meal to them. Put decox in meal here for spring calves till autumn
