The problem is there are plenty of "genuine" sellers who insist on you paying using Friends and Family unless you pay their fees.

If you offer paypal as a method then you take the hit on the fee's its all part of using paypal and you should price accordingly.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    Agree 100% ^^

Sellers should put the cost of the item with the Paypal fees as the listed price. Then state that in the description.

Would take the guesswork and PM's afterwards arranging payment out of the equation.

I'm a long time seller on Adverts and give the option of either PayPal (Friends or Family) or Revlout for payment. If they don't want to use F&F then it's either Revlout, maybe Bank Transfer. They can always cancel the sale if they like, all the one to me. My feedback is rock solid and I give the buyer options but I don't think I should take the hit myself if they don't want to use the F&F option.

Yes I always offer to cover the fees. I am happy to pay for the security. On the flipside, when selling I usually put in my adverts - "Accept payment via paypal, buyer covers fees".

However that being said, I usually just send Paypal friends or family or Revolut if the value is small and the buyer has a solid sales history. Luckily I had my guard up for that particular purchase due to the money I was spending (~200 euro) and the fact that the sale switched to Whatsapp.

I had a tosser contact me and he wanted me to give him a list of dates and times that he might be able to call to collect item. It was a €6 purchase.

I actually dont see a huge issue with that - to be fair, if it was a €500 purchase you would be happy to give a list of dates and times. The problem here is that for a six euro purchase you dont want to be inconvenienced with the collect; but the same applies to the buyer also.

I would never put a €6 item up for sale in the first place.

I'd be asking the tosser for their list of dates and times and I'd pick from their list.

I am using adverts 16 years and whilst there are some awful dopes on it, the good far outweigh the bad in my opinion. Rule of thumb, do not deal with anyone with little or no feedback and any negative feedback I will absolutely not entertain.

Compare to donedeal which is a dreadful site, adverts is a million times better.

I have gotten some serious deals on adverts down through the years and have also given back too, it's my go to place when I am in the market for most things these days.

It was an item for sale "post only".

The guy has a lot of negative reviews. I am not going to have an open invitation for someone to chose the date and time from a list, am I supposed to sit in and wait for him in case he might call?

Had the strangest seller a few years ago - we agreed the price- then he messages me on adverts telling me, not asking me, telling me where and when to meet him - I told him I cannot meet at that time and suggest alternative date/time- and he blocks me😀

    Bizzare

I recently sold a cheap item, I had multiple offers from different accounts that seemed to be the same person.

My adverts account goes back to the beta version that launched when the 'For Sale' forum was moved off here to a standalone (Yeah yeah I'm old as fcuk) and I have to say my experiences are mostly positive but I live in Dublin and usually only buy from and sell to people that are local to me. If you're rural I can see how it's a pain. The one thing with FB Marketplace is it works on location.

The musical instrument community are usually great but once I was selling an Xbox I won and that was an eye opener, seems only absolute scum buy such things 😀

Little vent, if you put something up for free and are helpful to the person when they come to collect and they don’t leave you feedback, it’s **** imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,206 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

Totally agree but how long ago did they collect? I find people can often leave it a week before getting around to leaving feedback.

Adverts is bloody amazing. I can get rid of pretty much any thing unwanted no matter what, stick it up for free and leave it in the front garden and bang it's gone! Had a few lads drive up from kells to Blanchardstown yesterday to collect a load of scrap timber, offered them €30 towards diesel and they only took €20. My feedback is up to around 700 and its mostly from giving away free stuff as a lot of the takers follow my account and become almost regulars 😃. Yeah it's definitely full of complete gobshites but it's easy to filter them out. Got a shock a few months back when I put my car up for sale and got charged €20

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

I used to use Adverts quite a lot, mostly to give decent used stuff away (for free), but recently I've found sellers are massively overpricing goods. For example:

    Adverts:

    Amazon:

    image.png

Same camera. (I have several of them!) I expect the seller is buying them from Amazon in the hopes of reselling for twice the price.

I genuinely cannot see any reason why someone would buy the same item at double the price from Adverts, (plus also travel to collect or pay extra for postage if you want it delivered). But fools and their money are easily parted.

While I've seen a lot of this with business sellers, I've seen a few private sellers with ridiculous expectations as well. Example:

A small lamp like that wouldn't cost you more than €15 in a shop, new, and with a lampshade included!!!!

Does that kind of overpriced crap actually sell, or does it just sit there forever?

    I never bothered to check!

I also picked up a lovely little cream lamp in B&Q today, for €8.00 (including shade!)

I've never been able to sell anything that has even been priced remotely like its actual value. If its not half of nothing I can't sell it on adverts.

Yeh…adverts has it's own item value system based on whatever similar is selling, or has sold on adverts, is what something is worth, so "no point trying to sell your XYZ for any more than they usually go for around here" is fairly reliable. CEX prices are also a factor for electronics.

I think “sitting there forever” - I’m a collector of certain glass ware - a number of overpriced items with “no price negotiation” clearly marked on the adds been sitting there for years literally - I think some people are trying to make out they’re big sellers when in fact they’re just idiots either trolling the site or whatever .

I’m sure they’re are items that sell well- certainly when I see anything I want to add to my collection I pounce if the price is right - but I’ve learned to steer clear of over priced items as it never ends well

a couple of times recently i've opened adverts with no issues; but i then get an email stating a new sign in has been detected; even though i have not actually needed to sign in, my session is still cookied.

    New sign-in detected

We noticed a sign-in to your account from a new device.
If this was you, there's nothing more you need to do.

it's clearly not a new device as the cookies are still there from a previous session! anyone else noticed this?

Think my latest was DoneDeal and wonder if to do with browser updates as my phone has been used many times and not a new device.

Time to put childish things aside.

Is it possible to see exactly who's following you on Adverts? I think i might have a stalker thats messing me about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,079 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

Dont think so, but its a public forum. Define a stalker? Your ad is on a public forum for all to see in the hope you can get it sold.

Anyone else notice the increased amount for voyeurs?

I've multiple adverts up, and plenty of "watchers" but no offers 😕

Came across an ad on there of some fella trying to sell off a old Nissan Almera as some kind of collectors car for thousands despite it being in half wrecked. You'd see better yokes in a scrap yard. Laughable. Getting torn to bits in the ad comments.
