I get that but from experience whatever price was mentioned in a negotiation becomes the new asking. So now people expect something off that.

Yeah that can happen. The way I avoid it is providing an asking price a good 20% or more depending on the item above what I’m actually looking for - I only engage with buyers who have good feedback and appear to be genuine - you can’t legislate for even these guys changing their minds but at least you’re reducing the chances of it happening .

What I don’t get on adverts is stuff listed for months and months on end , usually with a note saying “no offers under asking price” but with a quite high asking price and no engagement with their add- it takes time and effort to upload an ad- why then be so stand offish?

If they were reasonably priced I can understand - clearly the seller has set their lowest price and won’t go under that - which actually isn’t a bad idea- if it’s priced to sell, it will sell eventually

What usually gives me a chuckle is people selling things with asking prices in the hundreds or thousands and can't be bothered to take a decent photo.

Some stuff up there must be 3 years and still waiting to shift it and some stuff up there a few days and snapped up.

It all depends in what they want and put a figure in under my set bid i might agree just to shift it and get rid of it.

I bought a cable from a lad in Dublin on Adverts. It arrived next day, shipped by Amazon! So he's presumably placing an order on Amazon for each order he gets, with a bit of an uplift, around 30%.

I feckin hate Amazon so I really didn't want to be giving them my business.

    …but you did!

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Amazon dont do next day shipping as always about 3 days is it not when i was a prime member.

Yep - I saw something I was interested in but was too pricey. Commented to see if seller would restructure offer but got rebuffed without a counter offer. I was prepared to go to within 85% of the asking price but didnt get a chance.

Its now for sale for well over a year though I now see its been reduced pretty close to the price I was prepared to pay. Too late for the seller and me as I ended up with a cheaper purchase from another adverts user.

I’m convinced there are people on adverts for whom their only social outlet is to respond to people enquiring about the items they’ve listed for sale 😀

Saw someone reject an offer because he didn't deal with people who had bad feedback. The guy had 65 positive and 4 negative lol

My ad stated collection only or delivery close by, buyer offered less than asking and delivery 80k away, got pissy and said I'm the worst seller on adverts (100+ positive) after accepting asking price and delivery 5 mins away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,695 ✭✭✭Sono

did you accept an offer from the buyer 80km away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,123 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

No I told him it wasn't anywhere near my value or location conditions.

Time to put childish things aside.

I like using Adverts but sometimes people either don't read the discription or think that it doesn't apply to them. I'd often throw up stuff for free with the condition that it's collection only (I don't want the bother of going into town to post stuff). The last day I put up a bunch of old RAM sticks, first request, would I post to Carlow? NO! Next, would I post to Dublin? NO! Am I ever passing through Tullamore? NO! Do I ever be in the Dublin area? NO! Last was from someone living only 10 minutes away who asked if I wouldn't mind dropping the RAM over to them? I'd had enough at that stage and took the ad down. From now on I'll be bringing any similar items straight to the recycling centre.

Are the free adds on adverts gone

I've never paid for any. Last ad went up about a fortnight ago.

Wake me up when it's all over.

    That's normal.

I had a car for sale and 2 people asked me if I'd drive it to their house, else they'd have to get the bus to me.

Ehh, no, because then I'd have to get the bus home!

The type of buyer that I'm always wary of is the one who tells you they'll be in your town this weekend and they offer you a lower price making out that they're doing you a big favour

and then they get shirty when you calmly remind them of the correct price. You need to be the one calling the shots when you're selling

    I just find it amusing

you can usually tell if someone is a timewaster by their first few comments.

Many messers on there but good people too to be fair. With experience the messers are easy to spot. It's not just about the raw feedback numbers but what's being said in feedback.

It's a pity that withdrawn offers don't show up. Also, a buyer could have 10 positive feedback and 0 negative and look decent but have loads of non offer comments. Not sure what is up with that - ADHD or off their head?

People firing out comments for collection only items that are located 200 km from them, they don't say whether they can collect or not but looking at their comments for other items bring up plenty of "are you ever in Cork" "i don't have a car" "I'll give you a fiver extra for petrol if you deliver". LOL.

It depends on what you're selling too, some item categories are much more likely to attract cute hoors/messers/idiots than others.

At least it's not Facebook Marketplace, that seems to be where the dregs of society congregate.

I and a poster chase me around the site a few years ago - we were both after a certain product - as soon as he saw me post an offer, he’d post a 1 euro bid to “go private” in order to negotiate offline - I beat him a number of times in that I got the item for my asking price - but just showed me there were some real weirdos hanging around that site

Please don't fall for the scammers I experienced recently. Don't accept payment shown to you on a phone with a false bank app where you will not get payment into your account for a few days. Do Not hand over your for sale item to them no matter how charming they are. I did not fall for their scam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,692 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Did you check their reputation on Adverts beforehand?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,589 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

Not so sure why would anyone fall for that? And good job you didn't either.

Hit the switch to keep the lights on.

It was a new account, no history and unknown location. That put me on guard straight away. I did mean to say that in my first post as the first to look out for to be on guard but not looking to bad mouth all first time users on Adverts.

You always have to remember that a large number of people are thick.

I am selling a tv at present.

Guy contacted me and asked for the model number, despite it clearly being in the title of the advert.

Then asked me if it was 4k, despite it saying it was Full HD in.....yes you guessed it, the title of the advert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,965 ✭✭✭9935452

I find you can have all the detail in the ad but people need to expand the text to see it, the read more tab .

Then they go and ask all the details that are already there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,554 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I obviously haven't seen the ad or your description but I have to admit I don't know the difference/similarity between 4k and Full HD so it's possibly a question I might ask if I was interested in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,723 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Well the potential buyer messaged me to say, sorry I was looking for a 4k tv and yours isn't......yeah I know, cos I put "full HD" in the title. If it was a 4k tv, I would have put "4k " in the title.

I sell on adverts and for the most part its great, few headbangers to navigate but fine overall.

I had my first scammer experience earlier this year.

A seller (14 year old account with 78 positives and 1 negative feedback) put up a gameboy and games for a very good price. I got in straight away and offered asking, he accepts and we PM to arrange delivery. He then says he has more gaming stuff to sell and that he can whatsapp me photos. I was a bit wary but I figured its a 14 year old account with 78 positives, plus I'm using Paypal goods and services so I'm covered.

He sends me the photos, I agree to buy the Gameboy from the advert and a few other games he sent me photos of. I paid via Paypal goods and services, which he had no problem with. Surely a scammer would insist on Paypal friends and family so I was confident that all was good.

A week passed and no tracking number. I contact him for an update and lo and behold there is a death in the family. I offer my condolences and say I'll leave him to it, he says he'd contact me in a few days with tracking. Another week passes and nothing. I was getting suspicious so I looked back at the photos he sent of the games I bought, there were two photos of the same game, supposedly showing the front and back of the box, but they were different copies. A quick eBay search later and I found where he nabbed his photos from.

I confronted him and he admitted it immediately, he had money problems from a gambling addiction and had put up a lot of adverts to get some cash together. He was begging for more time saying he'd return all the money, but he never did. He was quite a pitiful character, I almost felt sorry for him. I filed the claim with Paypal and got my money back, and reported him to adverts. His profile is still up but he is no longer able to comment, post ads or pm people.

He must've been very desperate to throw away an adverts account with quite a few positive feedbacks, plus the Paypal money was always going to get refunded to me as it was goods and services. I left a bad feedback to warn off others. Another negative feedback similar to mine appeared afterwards, seems he stung someone else. I hope they used Paypal goods & services too.
