I agree, there is so many unknowns here in this fight in regards Conor.Less unknowns about Diaz,he has fought at this weight before, for Conor we don't know will his power and speed translate we don't know how he will deal with someone bigger and longer than him.
People need to forget about the contracted weight divison. It’s irrelevant. Only their physical weight matters. And both fighters will be close to lightweights in the cage.
Conor and Diaz will be a similar, to RDA when he fights at LW.
Diaz will be cutting significant weight even to get to 170.
It’ll be a token weight cut, nothing significant imo.

yeah I get what you're saying alright but even call it 170lbs weight fight, it;s still not a weight he's ever actually COMPETED at, so it's new to him. he doesn't even know how he'll perform. he thinks he does but again, under competition, who knows how he will!!
He’s competed at LW before. In that fight he was probably 170 in the cage. If people are suggesting that he’ll be 170 in there, then Yes he has competed at this weight before.
He number on the fight contract is irrelevant imo.

I think thats what most people don't seem to get on the face of it,yeah its 2 Lightweights fighting at Welterweight, but Diaz will be close to 190 in the fight he doesn't walk around 170 like Conor he walks around closer to 200.

He has said it plenty of times that the cut to 55 kills him and he has been fighting the weight off for his whole career, and is always talking of going up in weight,he did have a few fights at WW already,he is a big guy, look at that interview from 2010 said it only takes him a week to get to 190.Thats 2010.

    http://mmajunkie.com/2010/01/nate-diaz-clarifies-weight-cutting-remarks-sees-future-at-lightweight-and-welterweight
Nate will be 190 in the cage? Where are you getting that from? His coach said he could have made 155. He wanted 160 initialy..

That article say he cuts less than 10lbs to make LW and walks around at 175 for welterf ights.
The 190 comment was about ballooning up 30 lbs when gorging on food after trying to stay at 155. Not he actually weight.

Said it in the previous thread but I strongly disagree with the notion that these are just two LWs fighting at WW.
We have one fighter who made FW just over 2 months ago and another who has repeatedly struggled to make 155.
Nate has said he cuts 10lbs to make LW, he’s obviously bigger now. But not far from 170 unless he is carrying lots of fat.
He missed weight before, but not because he physically struggle but because “they weren’t paying him enough”.

His coach spouted lots of nonsense in that interview though. He was saying that Conor was so big 10 days out that he must be on steroids to cut that weight. He then says Nate could have made 155. In 10 days without camp and he walks around heavier then Conor.

Nate has said in interviews that he was planning on going up for his next fight so he could fight GSP after.

Nate is big enough for WW tbh, he's 6"1 at least, looks a good inch bigger then Cowboy from pictures at the weigh ins. He'd need to bulk up a bit though.

What are you talking about with that? Conor has stated he's walking around slightly under 170 (nearly a full weight division above LW) and Diaz will probably have at least another 10lbs on him by the time he enters the cage. If you're talking about how much LWs normally blow up after weigh-ins then you're totally ignoring the effects of drain making weight would be on the fighter who is making the more drastic weight cut and also the general size difference between the two.

On the rest of your post, you're putting way too much faith some of what Diaz and his coaches have said despite how they consistently contradict themselves about weight (to put it mildly).

A few examples, he's complained repeatedly in the past about how tough it is for him to make 155, he told the UFC he was 200lbs days before RDA dropped out, when setting up the fight his team said he wasn't going to be able to make 160 (after originally asking for that weight), he has come out saying that he had already started bulking up to fight at 170 again. It's naive to ignore all these statements from him and his team and then pretty much solely base your case around other comments he's made.

    Lets look at the facts.

    - Diaz has never fought at 145 while Conor fought at that weight just over 2 months ago, giving him little time to fully bulk up (though he's made a solid start).
    - Conor has never fought at 170 yet Diaz fought at that weight several times.
    - Conor has never missed weight for 155, Diaz did versus RDA and took 3 attempts to make it when weighing in against Henderson.
    - Diaz' camp were always pushing for a higher weight class than 155, right up to 165 (if he'd have no problem making weight then what benefit would there be to making this demand).
    - Diaz has (at least) a 3 inch height advantage and a 2 inch reach advantage, he is simply the much bigger fighter. That's the same height difference as Conor had over Mendes and he towered over him.

I do accept that Diaz isnt a monster 170 but he is one of the biggest 155 guys so the benefit he gets from not making the cut to LW are huge, similar to McGregor fighting a 145 opponent at 155.

I also don't totally buy in on the narrative that he's jumping straight to 170 but your narrative that they're both LW fighters is even more misleading. As I said when the announcement was made, accepting the fight at 170 took serious balls from Conor and I hope it doesnt come back to bite him.

I know what the weight divisions are. I'm talking about the typical size of a LW verses a WW. 170-175lbs is about normal for a LW in my estimation. How am I ignoring the effects of the cut? That makes no sense tbh, Conor doesn't have to cut here, so how would it affect him.

    Keep in mind the context of the post I was replying to;
we don't know will his power and speed translate [to this new size]
I'm pointing out that he is currently typical size for lightweight. (170 is cut range for LW). We actually have seen him fight at LW, and his speed and power was not an issue the last time around.
    conor.gif?t=1356998698

Not having to cut for this fight, can only improve performance. The fact the contract says it's technically a WW fight isn't going to affect him physically or slow him down. He'll be a LW with more energy.
On the rest of your post, you're putting way too much faith some of what Diaz and his coaches have said despite how they consistently contradict themselves about weight (to put it mildly).
I'm not putting total faith in anything he says tbh. There's a lot of contradictions as you point out. But I put more weight in comments he's made this weekcompared to a 6 year old article.
    - Diaz has never fought at 145 while Conor fought at that weight just over 2 months ago, giving him little time to fully bulk up (though he's made a solid start).
    - Conor has never fought at 170 yet Diaz fought at that weight several times.
Historical weight divisions aren't relevant. Diaz last fought at WW 5 years ago. That's a long time, so much so that it would be no different right now if those 4 fights never happened and he spent his whole career at LW.
    - Diaz has (at least) a 3 inch height advantage and a 2 inch reach advantage, he is simply the much bigger fighter. That's the same height difference as Conor had over Mendes and he towered over him.
I'm not disputing that Diaz is bigger. That's not relevant to my point.
He by far the biggest, tallest rangiest fighter McGregor has faced.

I never said not cutting doesn't benefit Nate. But McGregor also benefits from not have to cut 15-20lbs this week.
When fighting a featherweight opponent, Conor benefits from his size advantage. He benefits if they fought at 145 or at 155.

I'm not saying that making it a 170 fight didn't take balls from Conor. He did, he is giving up an edge and most fighters would have squeezed out every little bit in their favour. Even if just to tire the opponent out making weight.
But the fact he's doing that doesn't mean this is truely a WW fight. It's stupid the way people are going on like it is imo.

    In a nutshell;
    • I'm not disputing that Nate is bigger Conor, I'm disputing that Conor will be facing a WW this weekend. as you put it, he's a big LW.
    • Conor will be roughly the same size than if the RDA fight went ahead. He's walking around like a typical lightweight.
    • Diaz's fights at WW 5 years ago are beyond irrelevant at this stage. He's a LW fighter, maybe carrying some extra weight due to being short notice, but maybe not judging by this pic and the fact he was training for a marathon.
    • The contract weight is actually irrelevant. It's just a piece of paper.
    • What actually affects the outcome is the weight that both of them are in 3 days time. It'd be nice if that info made it out via embedded, but probably won't.
"It was never that I couldn't make 155 — I said that I wasn't. It's two weeks' notice; they want me to fight? It's going to be at 170. I'm still a lightweight,"

yeah chael was a great man for talking himself into an all star ass whopping!!

I hope t his goes well for conor which I think it will but not nearly easy as many think. fighting a guy this big is a huge test and maybe one he may regret on the night. If he can Stockton slap the best of them, he's capable of countering conor with hard shots. I will say though that long body is a model for signature mule kicks and front kicks. he wont be able to stand in the pocket the way he did with Holloway etc, this guy is too powerfull. his awareness of range and distance will have to really come into play, Diaz can box from bent waist with them arms. Conor needs to move his feet getting in and out and at 170lbs??? may be tiresome!

Diaz isn't powerful, he's a volume boxer but he doesn't have power at all. That's the one thing Conor won't have to worry about and it's getting kod imo, which will mean he will be able to flourish.

12:50 of the video... "Lets see what you can do with the size. Lets see what you can do with the reach. You ain't got ****"

Noticed at the time that Nate didn't want to get to close during the staredown. He put his hands up about 3 feet early as they were coming together and was backing away before it was over. Indicative of his mindset? Wanting to stay away and keep McGregor at distance? He has said that he's going in there to "kill or be killed", that "I might get murked...or he might" and that he's going to go in and "try not to get my head taken off". Also mentioned that he didn't have a camp during the press conference and one of the embedded videos. Seems like he's leaving himself a back door mentally.

The Diax bros are a walking talking contradiction.
On one embedded he was talking about training with Rickson and how Kron comes to work with him before fights. And in the press conference he was asking "who do you even train with".

But then they are complaining that they nobody to train with, no blacks belt to roll with, etc.

I took that as having a dig at McGregor for not training with one of the gracies and also something about getting ido portal to swing a pool noodle at him. They basically don't see John Kavanagh or his sparring partners as being of any note.

Except for the blackbelt part. He surely knows that both John and Gunni are blackbelts.

Yeah he was definitely talking about Conor's training partners, but clearly forgot about Gunni.

Had to laugh at Nick talking about Ido and the pool noodle though!

You can train with the best all day every day but its not a guaranteed formula to be the best around,I dont think anybody from SBG that has fought in the ufc can strike particularly well at a world class level outside of Conor,it hasnt stopped Conor getting to the top of the game,

I think his team and mma in general is evolving rapidly in 5 years time the people john kavanagh and roddy have in the ufc will be like new species compared to what they have produced so far.

Disagree with this completely, there wasnt a strike thrown in the maia v Nelson fight and I enjoyed it immensely as a grappling fan and martial arts fan, anybody who didnt should go watch kickboxing or muay thai imo.

although it is a martial art, I've never liked the grappling side unless it's quick and a game changer!! different strokes though, i'd much rather watch korean tae kwon do, or shotokan or even kung fu. I love watching K1 and kickboxing so as you say, I guess I cannot really appreciate a fight which happens on the matt primarily, it's technical yes, complex, yes but not for me though hey that's why it MIXED martial arts..

Cant understand this mentality. You actively dislike a fundamental aspect of the sport?

Did you watch Maia's last outing against Gunnar. It was a thing of beauty. How anybody who professes to be a fan of mma can say they didnt enjoy it is beyond me

I'm a relatively new fan of MMA, and having never practiced any martial art I'm not in any way knowledgeable about most of the techniques I see. That said, I thought the Nelson Maia fight was absolutely gripping. Even if I was a bit upset as I was cheering for Gunni.
