Has anyone noticed that the common theme is multiple times over the limit?

I despair for the human race. A few years worth of no visible Garda presence on the roads, and some just take the complete piss, driving cars 4 years out of tax, buckled drunk, not a disc in the window, banned, wrong side of the road, bald tyres, no seatbelt, and a multitude of other offences.

This crackdown is great, I must say. Look at the sheer amount of uninsured drivers for a start who have a direct impact on our pockets. Then all the drunks who could kill someone. FFS one drove at a couple of gardai on the wrong side of the road.

    Keep up the good work.

Full respect to the police and their actions in getting a lot of tossers off the roads.

I generally agree with you, but the Insurance Federation of Ireland (or someone) had an ad campaign recently saying uninsured drivers add €50 to your premium. That may be, but it doesn't explain where the other €250 hike in my premium came from this year. No claims, same car, same driver, etc.

The ad is on their confidential reporting site:

Well, mine went up with €43 this year.....
Might not explain your €300 but it does explain my €43

But besides that, i really dont fancy an adventure with an uninsured driver.
My car is worth 3x nothing but imagine having a car with some value and some unisured cnut runs into you.

A friend of mines insurance quote is so high and such a high excess, that if they had an an accident to the value of the excess, they'd literally pay out the value of the car and be left with nothing. So, although I'm not advocating it, it makes far more sense for them not to be insured at all as the coverage they have will leave them in a worst position if they have an accident.

While the insurance premium may equate the cost of the car, can they afford someone else's medical bills and long term care costs?

they pick up the tab for uninsured drivers

(and claiming back from them is a much slower process than claiming back from an insured driver)

    Logic fail.

€1800 for the policy, plus a €3000 excess. Car is worth €5000.

For the sake of this example, lets assume no personal injury, just material damage:

No accident, they pay out €1800 (35% the value of the car)

They have an accident, assuming they are at fault and the claim is larger than the excess (For example, an even €3000). They ultimately pay out €1800 + €3000 = €4800 (95% the value of the car)

Now, they could claim for their car (assuming its written off), but why bother? Its a €5000 car which if they claim, it will be added to the cost of their claim, ultimately paying it back for years in a loading which will greatly exceed the value of the car or a loan interest percentage. It makes more sense to write off the car with no claim, repair it out of pocket, or borrow the amount of the car to replace it.

In short, the €1800 they are paying for insurance is ultimately worthless as they never see any value from it (Unless of course a larger claim is made, no contest there, my example is simplistic)

If they weren't insured, they have €1800 extra to put towards the third party plus the excess as a lump sum. In short, have €4800 sitting in the bank, earning some paltry interest, is better insurance than the policy they have as assuming no personal injury or Garda fines, they are better off at the end of year one even if they have an accident that has less claim value than €4800.

the reason why insurance is required is that you have to be in a position to pay for the damage you do to other people.

It doesn't matter whether or not it will pay to repair or replace your own car - the state has no interest in that.

It matters whether you can pay for the BMW that you crash into.
It matters even more if you can pay for the medical costs you incur - yours, your passengers, or the people you hit.

Not getting insurance because it won't cover repairs to your car is missing the point completely.

What about the damage another person does to me, who was paying less insurance?
