Revenue do be very interested if republic licence holder. Otherwise quite difficult for any out of state registered vehicle to be found out.

If its taken by Customs, it's a different kettle of fish. Bigger fines for a start.

Can the Gardai confiscate them at the side of the road?

And I meant if they are driven by UK/NI residents. Not RoI residents.

Is this a bit of a grey area.

If a visitor from London drives their car over to us here, and isn't taxed or insured, why would it concern Revenue?

How would the Gardaí know it was not taxed or insured? Clean windscreen.

They can contact their friends overseas.

Well what happens if they hit someone here?

I hope your mate is caught and the car is taken off them by customs.

Just because they car has a yellow reg means that it should be free of our insurance laws ??

    Just perplexing stuff altogether.

There is no such thing as a hypothetical question on boards. You would want to be some ninny to believe that.

Everyone has 'a mate' wants to know.

    read between the lines buddy.

I didn't ask the question for myself, or a mate. It actually was hypothetical in this instance (believe it or not).

Just that I check out this thread and it popped into my head since we have many NI cars driving around in Ireland, especially up where I live near the border.

I genuinely wondered if the Gardai can take your car off you if the tax is out of date? Of course the big problem now is that, afaik, NI cars don't display any tax discs on windscreens. And they never displayed insurance details, so spotting an untaxed, uninsured, un-MOTd NI car is likely next to impossible.

Was genuinely just wondering what powers they have.

Not grey at all. The right to import a vehicle temporarily, and gain exemption from duties etc, is dependent being legal in its home jurisdiction and having insurance.

Pretty much all NI cars are in Ireland, presumably this only arises if they visit the 26 counties.

    .

But someone who drives across the border from North to South for a day trip, or who comes over on a weeks holiday from Wales, isn't looking to import a vehicle are they?

I'm sorry I asked the question at all now.:D

He specifically mentioned Revenue. I also don't see why Revenue would be interested in insurance. Motor tax yes, but insurance is for the Gardai only...unless they have an interest in the various insurance levies being paid and that gives them a remit.

There's a very simple answer to the problems of people that don't tax their cars. Do away with the road tax system, and put it on fuel instead.

Also solves the problem of the shyte that the manufacturers bring into Ireland with the smallest engine they make to avoid the problems of the tax being too high on the reasonable performance vehicles. If it's a gas guzzler, then the user pays for it, if it's actually cheaper on fuel because the performance is better balanced, win win for everyone, the manufacturer gets a better reputation for a good performance vehicle, the user has a safer car because it's a better performer, and the fuel economy means less pollution.

Also with politicians being what they are we would just end up paying double anyway.

As it happens that very thing happened in the 70ies I believe. They did away with road tax and lumped it onto the fuel. Only to be reintroduced later when the public started forgetting about, as they do now. Do you think they took it back off the fuel then when they reintroduced the motor tax?

Sadly 90% of these cars will be back on the road only a couple of hours after they are taken, you can pick them up straight away!

In that case, lets upgrade those check points a bit and fit them with crushers in stead of recovery/tow trucks.

Road tax is only relevant to the country of origin. ie An english reg and english owned vehicle can be driven in 26 counties without english road tax. . Insurance is mandatory wherever it is driven and same rules apply as to an Irish uninsured vehicle.

That's not brownstown. That's the first time I've ever seen a Garda checkpoint inside the curragh camp.

Lack of licence won't stop the likes of that person driving.

It needs to be a tougher punishment than a driving ban which will probably be ignored anyway. Jail and a massive fine.
