Both the same, if refused for one then the second is refused as well. It's the type of company (T&C for staff) that concerns the Americans.

They also don't like that they are not American and are scared of competition.

they should announce the route is not going ahead for now and work to see can they sort it

That would remove the entire purpose of announcing it (to put pressure on the US authorities), so they won't be doing that.

I'm just wondering what kind of lobbying fire power Shannon has to throw a spanner in the works...

Nil. Its US airlines and their staff unions that are lobbying, and they do have power.

I presume at this stage the Cork - Boston route is hardly going ahead now?

Flights from Cork by Norwegian are not going ahead this year, should be officially announced later today or tomorrow.

Correct. Must be hugely frustrating for Norwegian, It's costing them a fortune to run the airline on different AOC's and not be allowed cross fleet the aircraft and staff.

Could another airliner slip into this void or does it take months to set up a new route between Ireland and US?

Why is this folks? What is the real reason there seems to be opposition to Cork-US flights? I know there will be a news announcement later but what is the real reason?

    Have they something against Cork?!

It's nothing to do with Cork, but rather how the airline plans to operate it.

This article from November 2014 will explain in broad terms:

I understand now but it just seems there is always a problem with getting a US flight out of Cork.

I would have thought labour laws would be weaker in the US rather than the other way around.

They can fly out of London! Would a few flights out of Cork really do so much damage to the big boys in the US?

Can it ever happen I suppose?

The 737 suited Corks thin market for a TA flight.

It was being used to get a toe hold and fulfill certain criteria of the FAA. It probably would have been dumped next year anyway if approval had been granted.

Again it has nothing to do with Cork.

Cork just happens to be on the launch route.

Whether right or wrong, the issue would be (for the US unions) that the airline would then launch routes to a significant number of other destinations, and that other airlines would then follow Norwegian in a race to the bottom.

    Press release prediction:

Route launch can't happen in 2016 due to issues outside the airport's control. Fully committed to NY and Boston in 2017.

And we'll maybe find out by the end of the year whether it'll actually happen in 2017 or not.

(Just my guess on where this is going.)

I know - I hear you on that and understand.

It just seems as though there always seems to be a problem with getting flights in Cork (particularly in the US) for one reason or another.

I knew this was just vapourwear.
It's not the first time that Cork's had a big deal exciting transatlantic announcement or rumour that doesn't come to fruition

Not as much as it would cost them to employ local staff and pay them properly on local T&Cs - at least in the longer term.

Just to Sum up weekend destinations from Cork for next summer. (Not INC. Holiday destinations for obvious reasons)

    -London (Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Cityjet)
    -Manchester (Aer Lingus)
    -Newcastle (Aer Lingus)
    -Birmingham (Aer Lingus)
    -Glasgow (Aer Lingus)
    -Edinburgh (Aer Lingus)
    -Southampton (Aer Lingus)
    -Leeds-Bradford (Aer Lingus)(Kind of, if you consider THU-SAT or SAT-TUE a weekend)
    -Paris (Aer Lingus)
    -Amsterdam (Aer Lingus)
    -Munich (Aer Lingus)
    -Cardiff (Flybe) Again SAT-TUE

So thats several UK destinations, and a few European destinations.

    Disappointing tbh.

I was making a delivery there yesterday at midday & the place was dead. :(

Not surprising! Second wave of departures leaves before midday and back later in the afternoon. Go there from 6am to 7.30 and you'll see all the based aircraft depart.

Its embarrasing though really. Airport propaganda spouting bile about the progression of the airport. :o

Go to Dublin Airport Terminal 2 in the early evenings and it's pretty dead as the Dublin based Aer Lingus short haul fleet is virtually all elsewhere.

After 07:45 in the mornings there are only the long haul flights - there is not a short haul aircraft to be seen there until after 09:00.

Every base has times like that - it's certainly not unique to Cork.

Between 07:45 and 09:00 in DUB you have departing as Short-Haul:

    07:50 London-Heathrow (EIN) T2
    08:05 London-Heathrow (BAW) T1
    08:05 East Midlands (RYR) T1
    08:15 London-Luton (RYR) T1
    08:20 London-Stansted (RYR) T1
    08:30 Newcastle (STK) T2
    08:45 London-Gatwick (EIN) T2

Of course I agree with your main point.

I specifically said in Terminal 2!!

Clearly T1 will have flights as Ryanair send in aircraft from other bases, and foreign airlines serve the airport too.

T2 is comparative with Cork as the entire locally based short haul fleet (which in T2's case is Aer Lingus) is gone.

You cannot expect the airport to be busy all of the time - aircraft have to fly out and come back!

In my OP I conveniently stated the terminal beside the flights. Very little, but not nothing.
