And you have the ryanair announcements too for the winter service this year. So things are picking up a bit for cork airport. If only there were a few more european city destinations. There is also potential for that madrid service to be extended a bit longer.

Hopefully in regards to MAD. The airport don't seem to be missing out on an opportunity to advertise it so it really is a key focus area for them.

Was looking through the most popular routes from Shannon and Cork in 2015 and some were very surprising. Why is Cork Amsterdam so popular? It's the most used route in Ireland that doesn't involve Dublin or London. It only really makes sense as a transit route for Asia. Is AMS really that popular for transiting for North America and Europe?
Also was shocked to see how reliant Shannon is on transatlantic, Boston and New York alone accounted for 20% of the airports traffic in 2015.

Several passengers actually transfer to the Carribean, South America and North America from AMS, more then you would think. The new MAD, JFK and BOS routes will hurt LHR and AMS, but probably not too severely.

Shannon has a strong US market, partially because of historic reasons. Most passengers on those services are tourists to Ireland.

Cork amsterdam is popular for a number of reasons. One as a hub to asia, then business travel to other parts of europe as cork doesnt have many destinations to mainland europe and then leisure one of the few places you can fly from cork for a log wkend

Twice daily flights give great flexability, went to Cuba via AMS in March, missed our connecting flight on the way home,,no problem, KLM has us transfered to a cityhopper service to LHR and the 14.05 EI to Cork. Great service and all in one terminal.

If American carriers are that concerned, i have to wonder why have they not taken on this new route ?

    ORK-BOS?

ORK-BOS wouldn't be their concern, quite frankly if there was someway in which the licence would only be valid for ORK-BOS then I doubt there would be much objection.

They are concerned about the big hubs, DUB, MAN, LHR etc.

As mentioned it's not Cork specifically that upsets anyone, it's the concept!

Similer to the Irish Ferries situtation a few years back and in Australia recently where crews of bulk carriers were forceably removed in order for Asian crew members to take over.

I think they've made a commitment to use US and European crews for this specific flight though.

Cancelled months ago. You try book them now:D

Will be interesting to see when they start, if at all.

Due to start before the end of the year apparently.

96 FM quoting Norwegian on their Facebook Page stating that the carrier is aiming at August 1st for their start date. The DOT should give its final ruling in a few weeks, so that would give them about two months to get the PR campaign up and running, get aircraft assigned to that route, and get all the little details out of the way. I presume they have slots in Boston, as well as ground handling sorted by now, so they won't have to worry about that.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

They fly there already from other European destinations. Flights are not at peak times in the US, arriving at something like 8pm so there should not be a problem. Then again I'v been wrong before.:D

According to the cork Examiner, Boston flight could start in August, if the approval is granted in May

Irish Ferries said when they transferred their first ship to the Cyprus flag that the rest would stay on the Irish flag. Within a year they were all flagged out and the Irish crews replaced. So what is saying about T&Cs I would take with a grain of salt.

Wouldn't be worried that much. I doubt that this bill will even clear the committee stage before the DOT makes its final ruling, if it even gets that far. Given the toxic atmosphere on Capitol Hill, I doubt that bill will go very far.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Proper employment practices is what they fear.

It's NAI rather than Norwegian though isnt it? There is a difference even though the branding is the same.

the original Norwegian currently does the long haul routes because NAI doesnt have permission to fly to the US.

Competition. Americans DON'T like people encroaching on their patch, they cry foul when they are stopped from entering other markets but when the shoe is on the other foot its a different story.

Norwegian apparently wants an AOC that allows them fly their 787s to the east and to the west, currently they are not allowed do that so its costing them money. They created an Irish subsidiary to gain access to the OpenSkies agreement to allow open access to the USA. The fear is when this all comes to fruition they will employ Far East employees on far lower wages and have them fly and staff the aircraft from the Far East through Europe to the USA and back again. Whereas if they were to use the Norwegian registry they wouldn't be able to do this and would have to employ staff and comply with Norwegian laws and would have to get the Norwegian and US governments to approve routes. Now Norwegian has stated they will employ US and European crews to fulfill these flights.

Now this is only what I've been able to find online, so correct me if and where I've got something wrong.

Norway is in open skies and they already use it to fly to the US ex-UK.

They want access to out employment and regulatory regime. If it's so terrible, the DOT should be banning EI.

Its not the Irish contracts though, its the use of Thai/Singapore contracts.

Is it there anything else going on here? It just seems as though anytime Cork has tired to set up US flights there is always something in the way.
