Johnboy1951, could you recommend some VoIP providers? I've been with Blueface for eight years but they no longer accept residential customers I believe. Their call charges to mobile are also exorbitant in comparison to some of the deals provided by the mobile operators.

It seems like an industry, at least in Ireland, that has not lived up to it's potential. Perhaps the demand just is not there yet.

No box on our pole but able to get it (can see the fibre cable on the pole though). Someone posted here that there's a max of 4 houses between each box but it could depend on the distance between the boxes. Have you checked if your house is on the yellow line here http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/

We are on the yellow line yes. We are already on FTTC but we are over 2Km away from the exchange so the speed is the same (if not a little worse) than when we were on full copper connection.

Does being on the yellow line mean that the black boxes are on the way soon or does it just mean that we will get it eventually in the all too distant future?

You would not believe how angry I am to see houses just a stones throw away with people who have just moved in and who have never used Eir before get an FTTH connection. We've been here with Eircom for nearly 20 years!

Are you the last house on that particular yellow line?

Engineers have been installing black boxes on the poles outside the houses of my neighbours just down the road. I assume these are the FTTH boxes? They stopped installing them just two houses down (so the nearest box is around 200m away from us). When inputting eircodes on the online eir-Fibre 1000Mb availability checker, all the houses with the black boxes outside have 1000Mb available to them. Then when I input my eircode it says "Not available".

I got onto eir over the phone and they said that they have no plans to cover our area! So they have no plans to come 200m further to cover us!

The Dept of Communications NBP map indicates which houses they are rolling out FTTH to in this particular phase, the 300,000 commercial rollout - http://www.dccae.gov.ie/en-ie/communications/topics/Broadband/national-broadband-plan/high-speed-broadband-map/Pages/Interactive-Map.aspx

Unfortunately if your house isn't included you'll have to wait for the NBP rollout.

How would one go about getting them to put one of those black boxes outside the house? I understand it's a 3rd party company that does it. If I found out who they are could I try and persuade them to come and install one final box to cover us?

Those external fibre splice boxes can supply a service to 8 houses up to a distance of 200m or further if they use secondary splices boxes but if your house/eircode isn't on the rollout plan no amount of persuasion will get you connected.

This would be a better forum for your question ;)

    Also I have seen mentioned
    irishvoip.com
    &
    irishvoip.ie
    recently.
one of which was recommended but not the other - sorry cannot recall which at the moment.
Most such providers allow for a free or cheap intro to check out the service.

If you're not included on the map it'll be via the NBP and be connected by either open-eir, SIRO or enet at some point in the future.

Being a stones throw away makes no difference, open-eir in their wisdom have included some houses and excluded others. This from the map of my general area, last house on the route has not been included

If you are on the yellow line you should get the service. The confusion could be coming from trying to order the service when it is not yet available. Just because there are boxes on the poles does not mean the service is live.

Check your Eircode on this page and report back what it says:

Ah ok. I'm over-reacting a little bit then. We are fortunately on a light blue circle too. I just need to have a little patience and perform a few switcharoos until it arrives.

    Thanks guys!

Was supposed to have my second attempt at installation this morning after initial installation didn't go ahead because of an issue with overhead trees. Got a date, and triple checked everything was OK. Got call from KN engineer this morning about "installing a modem". I said "its a fibre to the home installation". He said he's never done one, and his order was just to install a modem from a copper line. Back on to Eir, Openeir, Customer Care. About six phone calls. Eventually, one decent woman at Customer Care persisted, and said my case was being escalated. Said she was on until 6.30pm and would call me if and when she got a response from OpenEir, the wholesale provider.
What a complete cock-up, and such imcompetence.
Don't know where exactly the fault lies, but Eir are the retailer, so it's their responsibility.
All let down by poor communication
After two days and endless phone calls, I'm told that my nearest appointment is 28th August, even though the fibre line is right outside my house, and KN are installing all around me. Suspect its to do with trees in the way of lines, but they won't tell me, they just say that "further work needed". That I'm willing to deal with myself, if needs be. Does anyone know if any other provider is offering Fibre to the Home in the Kinvara area? Might try a separate order to see what happens. FFS!

Had an install date this morning for FTTH. Was very specific with the eir sales guy for what I wanted. I mentioned more than once that I wanted fibre extreme and even went as far as giving him the DP number of the splice box and called out that there was a long underground duct and to ensure that the installer was aware of that and needed rods etc.
He seemed to understand and went through the speed options with me and I went with the 150mb

So what do I end up with this morning --- FTTC - 30mb

We have only just moved in and had no connectivity so 30Mb is better than nothing but please can Eir not get a simple order right - I'm dreading trying to get through to sales !!

very strange, usually when FTTH is available at an address, FTTC is no longer an option. I've yet to come across an address where both FTTH and FTTC is available.

Sorry should clarify it is actually eVDSL - cabinet is in the exchange - we are on the edge of the village so close enough to get eVDSL and far enough to qualify for FTTH

If you enter your eircode here https://www.eir.ie/broadband/1000mb-fibre/ what does it say?

you need to check the standard telephone line checker as well here https://www.eir.ie/broadband/

The eircode checker isn't always accurate for everyone, mine is still failing! on both Eir's website and the Open Eir Eircode checker.

My eircode passes, don't have a landline yet to check (kn guy doing it now)

My next door neighbours eircode and phone was passing but some of my neighbours up the road were failing the phone check last week. Checked again this morning and now one of their phone passes whereas both their eircodes are passing.

Do you have ftth? Would have thought the eircode passing is the most important thing.

yep have FTTH almost 2 months at this stage! The telephone number passing was good enough for Eir to complete the installation.

Just checked FTTH providers other than Eir in Kinvara, and Lightnet say they can supply. €55 per month, 18 month contract.
Has anyone used them? An acquaintance I know got their limited package for €35 and is quite happy. "“Unlimited” means up to 1 terabyte (1TB) of data usage per calendar month"
    • €65 Connection fee
    • Free Fritz! Box WiFi Router.
    • Broadband Speeds up to 100Mbps download and up to 20Mbps upload.
    • No charge for out of package data usage.
    • Optional VoIP phone service add on with low cost calls and No line rental.
    • Fixed IP Address
    • 18 Month Contract
    • Galway Based Care & Support team

Don't understand why they quote 100Mbps rather than 150 Mbps though. Acquaintance was getting 117.32 Mbps down from them.

Those figures sound very like VDSL. I wasn't aware of Lightnet as a FTTH reseller. They also have wireless products which may be what your acquaintance is using. The only resellers I know of were Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Westnet and Net1.

It's all going to go back through Openeir and KN though so I'm not sure if going with an alternative provider will solve your issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭banjopeter

No, it's not VDSL. I was sceptical myself, but they said Openeir are their wholesaler. I'm 2 miles outside the village, so fibre would be the only way to get those figures. The fibre line is right outside my house, thirty feet away. The splice box is one pole away. I've just cut and cleared the tree branches that were encroaching on my current phone line to the gable from the pole, and intend to clear the ones that are near the main fibre line on the road. Lightnet say they send out someone to do a "line site test", so I presume if they OK it, Openeir will come back and install the line..

But Openeir are the VDSL wholesaler also. A line of sight test sounds like they intend installing their wireless service. Everything on their site is up to 100Mb. I'd be sceptical that they are actually selling FTTH.

Their website says Fibre or Wireless. It is strange why they say up to 100mps. maybe they sell FTTC & FTTH ?

Edit: says fibre is coming soon.

Or they haven't gotten around to updating their website to reflect the fibre packages. I just attached a second screenshot above which suggests 'fibre coming soon'

You may be correct. I still don't believe it will solve banjopeter's problem but I guess it is worth a shot.

Well if he has cancelled his order and resubmitted, it should start fresh in the system, and he's cleared the offending trees so you would think that it should be able to be installed first time.

I'm guessing the appointment for August was because they needed to get someone out to clear trees?

Edit: Would appointment only be availalbe in August due to the restrictions for when hedge cutting could be completed?

    Hi all,

I live in Stradbally Co. Waterford and recently I have noticed sub contractors for eir installing what I assume is fibre cables on the existing telephone lines on the approach to the village, the exchange in the village is very old and outdated and I was wondering if anyone has any idea how long before they usually install a cabinet (according to eirs roll out map within 1 year). Does anyone have any further information, it would be greatly appreciated as our internet connectivity is very bad. Lots of my neighbours are waiting on their arrival.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭Bored Accountant

Does anyone have any further information

    According to the openEir website (http://fibrerollout.ie/where-and-when/) for Stradbally;
Estimated date for first Live FTTH Fibre Services with speeds up to 1000Mb/s is Spring 2018

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭banjopeter

But their website says "Wireless or Fibre" and the person on the line was emphatic it was actual FTTH. It's "line SITE test", not sight. Also, their website says:
AVAILABLE AS WIRELESS OR FIBRE :
FREE phone line - no line rental!
    (Fibre products only)
    FREE Fritz!Box WiFi Router
    (Fibre products only)
Competitive call rates to landlines and mobiles!
    (Fibre products only)
I like the idea of a Fritz! Box Router, as opposed to Eir's 2000 offering

Looks like its still a phone/dialup exchange at present?

Nobody can second guess the timeframes, the teams that run core to the exchange aren't the guys who install the new racks and not the guys who go out and do installs.

Unfortunately its likely to be slow enough process as theres no install one unit as with VDSL, 200 users upgraded, its all man hours.
