Worth forking out for a new wifi hub? - using an apple airport extreme I got from work at home, and I copy files from my laptop over wifi to my pc and I've no complaints would love to have the ftth to test it over that F2000 yoke that seems to have brutal wifi.

I am gonna have to get some sort of a wifi hub, something that works and that's very easy to install.

Yeah haven't done much twiddling with that airport - plus it looks nice sitting on my window sill. No wonky looking antennas they're still there just covered up. And 5ghz is class once you have a few appliances that use it.

    If you had a PoE enabled switch you could pick up some PoE wireless access points;
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=poe+wireless+access+point

(assuming your house is wired somewhat)

Do you mean a replacement for the F2000?

Or is there another way to configure wi fi solution using the F2000 plus a hub?

That Fritzbox router supplied by Digiweb seems to have rock solid reviews.

Anybody got suggestions for F2000 alternative

Yeah 1000mbs is overkill for 99% of domestic situations - I'd be more concerned about the fup that Gonzo is complaining about.

How are you testing xbox ps, don't they connect to their own VPN to run speed tests? So the wired tests are a bit skewed I'd say.
As for wifi? what do you expect it's wifi!!
Great to see wifi being the bottleneck about fuppin time.
Will apple stick the aul ethernet port back on the macbook? :D

Oh yeah, I expect the drop-off, it is more the randomness of the speeds that is weird.

I've set up my TPlink powerline network, I've three extenders around the house.

First one in the same room as the extender/router (so i can plug in the console) gives 5mbps from the wi-fi about 50 through the cable, the one in the sitting room gives about 1mbps, and the one way upstairs gets 22mbps :D

I'm going to invest in 2 X 5m cables for the consoles, the rest is grand.

But as you say, it is great that my complaint is about the wi-fi not the main connection speed

I use a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. It might be overkill for most, but I live in a 200 year old house with 4-foot thick walls, so I need something strong :D

Wow that looks like a beast alright

How is wi fi in all areas? (big house/2 storey)

I have cat cable run to all rooms. Does any one have best suggestion to use these "network points" to extend wi fi to other areas. Not sure of product needed.

Honestly, it's really overkill even for me at the moment given that my connection is only 5Mb, but I thought it'd be a good way to ensure I'm getting the most out of that 5Mb and I'm also prepared for when FTTH comes around :P

All I can say is that I use the 5GHz band on it on my phone all the time, and no matter where I am in the house I only ever drop one bar or signal. I haven't done speed tests on it, given that with FWA internet at low speeds like 5Mb it's pretty hard to tell if the problem is the router or the connection coming in to the house. :)

LOL - you could probably do a bit of defrosting with that yoke.

Very few domestic switches are PoE capable, but most PoE access points come with either a PoE injector or a separate power adapter anyway.

I got myself a Unifi AC Pro access point recently, and it is absolutely fantastic. It is not intended as a domestic device (so the setup is not plug and play), but it is absolutely worth it for stability and performance of the WiFi.

If you have problematic WiFi, I would highly recommend one.

Cheers that looks like a good wi fi extension option for me.

I have cat cable to all rooms so would just need a POE switch to support access point

    Thanks

I don't want to replace the F2000 as it's great for wired, I mean it couldn't be better with 2 ms pings and rock solid wired speeds but the wifi is a joke. Could do with a cheap and cheerful, easey to setup wifi hub that is reliable and loads pages and apps fast.

Just plug a decent wifi router into one of the network points that is connected to the F200 surely? Turn off DHCP on it and any devices that connect to it will be assigned an IP by the F2000. We have this set up at home, Eircom router with one connection to a switch. There are three wireless routers wired to the switch that broadcast wifi at different locations. Works fine. Then again we only have a 1mb connection, so maybe there would be some loss when trying to get the most out of FTTH.

I've got the same setup but with 2 wireless routers (one is n, one is ac) . Getting <50 Mb down on my SU6 in the same room as either router. Would be expecting 100 down

EDIT We used 21.25 GB yesterday. Vast majority of which was speedtests

KN crews are down the church road in Patrickswell, opening manholes and pushing fiber through.

For people trying to see your usage on myEir, if you click into 'View historical usage' you can see usage per day.
I'm only on DSL so maybe not available for FTTH?

problem with these ac pros is that the netgear router has faster wifi.

ask me how i know :-(

Yeah i thought they were kinda obsolete after ac wireless became popular.

Had a few issues signing up for Myeir myself.
You will have an 8 digit account number (from an email from Eir) and then I got a text when my account was activated in the format XXXX-YYYYYYY

On the Register page for Myeir select XXXX as your mobile /phone number prefix in the drop down and enter YYYYYYY as the rest of your number.

You'll then have to enter the 8 digit account number

FYI I ordered broadband only with no active phone line. I do have existing phone line going to my house but hasn't been used for years

Pure Telecom is a retail operator selling open eir wholesale services. eir retail is a retail operator selling open eir wholesale services. There are no "eir patches".

I don't know about sales reps on the phone, but I know for a fact that some of the eir retail reps on the doorsteps have been telling some shocking porkies.

Are you sure that it is fibre cable or is just piping to accommodate fibre cables going through underground ducts?
