Did you know that there is a connection between Only Connect and Pointless.

    Esther Walker.

She is the sister-in-law of both hosts.

Alexander Henry Fenwick Armstrong is married to Hannah Bronwen Snow.

Hannah Snow is the sister of Esther Walker.

Esther Walker is married to Giles Robin Patrick Coren.

Giles Coren is the brother of Victoria Elizabeth Coren Mitchell

Now that would definitely be a pointless answer :D

An uncharacteristically serious intro from Victoria tonight.... I'd love to know when this episode was recorded

From what she was saying, it sounded recent enough.

When it comes to missing vowels, does anyone else get every one in a category or get none at all? By far my best round but a bit all-or-nothing

    Yeah, pretty much.

It's easy when you're familiar with a category.. but North Vs South yesterday has very UK landmark specific ones which stumped me.

I'll be honest - I love Round 1 and Round 2 but once the Connecting Wall comes around, I'm never as arsed.

And then missing vowels is always relatively easy to get a few.

I think the show is it's most enjoyable in the first 2 rounds.

EDIT: Missus got this for Christmas games.. it's basically "Only Connect Lite": https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IN41WRU/

I usually just turn the episode off after the wall. It's such an odd move to have a final round that is so different to the bulk of the show.

On a different note, hard to think of a University Challenge contestant who was useless as Monty Panesar - he only spoke once in tonight's episode, and even that was a wrong answer!

Why do they waste so much time on the first item in a sequence. It tells them nothing. Go straight to the second or third one and give yourself the time to see the pattern.
Recently, I saw the first tile come up of "Adam & Eve" recently and took a guess at
    cockney rhyming slang
.. and was right. Was chuffed!

Sometimes you get a hunch.. but whether it comes to fruition, and whether you'd have the balls to buzz in after 1, is another thing entirely.

Sometimes if you know it you see it straight away. I got the E numbers one straight away on the first clue tonight.

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of coincidental answers that appear on quiz shows on the same night. So much so, I actually started keeping track of them at one point and had built up quite a list, but I've no idea what I ever did with it in the end!

Tonight's (first, haven't finished watching yet) example is the musical "Company". I've never even heard of it, but it was an answer on both Mastermind and OC tonight.

It might be a result of watching so many quiz shows, and a bit of confirmation bias - but I still think it's mad!

TBH - I don't watch it that often, but even going straight to the second tile will give you more time to confirm your hunch.

But even if you did guess it, is there not also a progression through the tiles as well to be deciphered?
Yeah, I think you’d very brave to buzz in on the first answer with not much more than a hunch, and I’m not sure if anyone has ever done it.

Yes they have, think it happened last season.

One of the funniest things I saw on TV was the reaction to the following sequence in round 2.

    IVANH
    VTESB
    VIROTJ

The groans of shame and disappointment when they realised they didn't recognised the Star Wars question were priceless.

I got it on the second clue too.

I got one of the questions in the final of the last series on a hunch from the first clue.

    Die Miester

when the second clue came up I was roaring at the telly, my hunch confirmed

    Die Besten

and singing along to that iconic tune in my head

    Les grandes équipes

    THE CHAMPIOOOOOOOOONNNNNSSSSSSS

Of course, it was the lyrics to the Champions League theme tune.

any spot the error in the answer caption for the last question in the connections round?

  • Moderators Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭Wise Old Elf

I didn't, but I got a couple of the wall, and a 3 pointer in round 1 so yay!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,937 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

This is what I was referring to

I noticed it but I believe it was intentional. Loins is an anagram of lions and all the clues were anagrams.

Proving once again that the job of Only Connect is to make me realise I am not as smart as I think I am. One it does admirably on a regular basis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,224 ✭✭✭Sparko

Hahaha same here. I got that question right and I think one other one so that was definitely a successful night for me 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,510 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Yep, I saw that, but assumed it was ironic/intentional.... didn't get the clues though, never having seen the Lion King!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,226 ✭✭✭artvanderlay

It's a pity they won't have Irish teams on it. It's UK residents only. I contacted Victoria on twitter once to check this and she very nicely wrote back and confirmed this. Shame, because I'd love to go on it :(

  • Moderators Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭Wise Old Elf

Same, I'd love a go at this or pointless but can't enter. My brother and a friend of mine would make a right to of it I reckon, not sure what "interesting" fact they'd have about me on the intro though 😅

Countdown used to let ROI contestants on, maybe they still do, a colleague was on once, she was beaten by an octo champ so no shame!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,510 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I was on countdown years and years ago!! Lost out to the eventual series runner up, a wily auld fella.

I would never, ever set foot near OC, would love a go at Pointless though! Or the Chase.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,226 ✭✭✭artvanderlay

I was on Countdown a few years back too. Lost to an octochamp as well. I had him on the ropes going into the final stretch but faded badly! I remember being wrecked after waiting around all day to have my go. Didn't realise that they shoot 5 episodes in a single day and I was on last! Glad I lost actually, because then I was able to enjoy the free hotel in Manchester for a couple of days :) Only connect is probably less pressured because you are part of a team and not sitting under a massive ticking clock!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,510 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I was on the first show/filming of the day, and yer man had already won one of "last weeks'" shows the previous day, so had a serious advantage on me! No rehearsal, no warm-up time, just straight into it, except he'd been there before. That was my excuse anyway, and I'm still sticking to it. I was like a rabbit in headlights for the first two rounds - once I got going I matched him round for round but it was too late by then.

Any idea why VCM is wearing a wig on tonight's show

No but I did wonder why she wore big red glasses on a previous show.
