Big worry is if anyone saw the weigh ins yesterday; I know McGregor has to cut more than most others in his division since he is bigger during the fights, but he really did look like one of those strung-out-on-deaths-doorstep type of addicts you see around town. Even in his altercation with Faber backstage, he looked extremely weak and shaken. The last 2 hours or so for him will have been huge, needing to get so much food and especially drink in without ruining his conditioning.

If he didn't come across like a total tool, I'd have more interest in staying up to watch it. Good fighter and all but when he opens his mouth, I have to mute the TV.

He does that as its all part of the game..

I'll be up to watch him win.

Like I was when me and 14 million of my brethren watched Munster beat New Zealand in a rugby friendly.

    Live.

    And pitch-side.

I think McGregor will do it, but it won't be as easy as he's been shouting about. Whatever about his ego these past few weeks, just imagine what he'll be like if he does win.

McGregor easily, if he's allowed use his lightsabre.

I'm big into sports. Honestly, McGregor is the reason I've gotten into UFC. A year ago, I had no interest.

I find all the trash talk very annoying, but I also find it highly entertaining too! I see all of this "off the field" stuff as entertainment, and McGregor is pure box office. It's a soap opera to me, all sports are. Mourinho. Joe Brolly. Etc.... What irritating line will they come up with next?

I don't care, well I do actually. But it'll keep me entertained anyway! :D

    Lets see.

    Ah yes,
    Treble
McGregor to win KO first round
    Shane Lowry to win
    and
    Westmeath to win

That's Mint Aero's wacky bet of the week :D

Aldo was probably paid off to 'sit this one out' and let Mendes (with only a couple of weeks training) step in and potentially lose to McGregor.

** Cue McGregor-Aldo title shot in Dublin. **

Dana White chooses Dublin as the Irish atmosphere will only translate well with the televised fight especially with the McGregor-Ireland connection, but also as a acknowledgement of the sports huge growth in Europe in recent times.

    Win or lose, money made.

Same as in fact I was pretty negative about the sport, the trash talk and drama are defo needed and there's no better man that CM for it.
That said I doubt I'll be awake for it, so best of luck to him!

Same as the rest of his weight ins. He'll come out looking like a beast tonight.

Hopefully he moves to 155 soon though, the cuts must be torture.

Mc gregor Aido was the biggest PPV sell in UFC history, reason a UFC fight wont be in Dublin is the time. US love UFC more than anyone else so the above is unlikely.

Great to see him do well for himself, even if he is a bit of a nob.
I'll be supporting McGregor all the way, from my bed, asleep.

I think McGregor will be too hard for Mendes to hit. I'd say a late 2nd round mid 3rd round stoppage in favour of CMcG.

    Boxing ftw
I would not like to see a top tier boxer against a highly ranked UFC fighter in the same weight division, it would... not end well. :o

Thing is Conor's a featherweight in UFC, but he'd be a welterweight in Boxing terms. If he was to fight a Boxing featherweight he'd be a monster in comparison

Aldo must be a very, very rich man by now since this is the fifth title defense he has dropped out of.

It depends - an MMA fighter would quickly submit a boxer (check out Connor McGregor's losses when he moved from boxing to MMA). An MMA fighter wouldn't win against a wily boxer at boxing. Apples and oranges really.

hasnt CMcG got an extra 4 or 5 inch reach in his arms? that'll count massively

Well true, I was thinking more in terms of actual weights vs. classes - should have worded it better. Like-for-like, the boxer would be lucky to even have a remote chance.

If McGregor was to fight Mayweather under boxing regulations, which he has talked about before, it would be embarrassing IMO. That is to say, it would be one of the easiest fights Mayweather has had in the last five years.

It's funny how the 'It's all to hype the fight' line gets thrown around when McGregor acts the knob, yet some of the same people were crying about Aldo's statement during the week.

But they wouldn't be limited to boxing, I meant in a fight. Basically that an MMA fighter is far more accomplished in terms of overall combat than a boxer of the same size and caliber.

I completely understand your point and I have kept them in mind.

If the UFC hypothetically had a Dublin based Aldo-MCGregor PPV fight, the best we could hope for is probably an early start, at maybe 2 PM pre-lims.
This would mean that it starts at 10 PM at the latest over in the states.
By doing that, the yanks (who might I add seem to love staying up for Super Bowl and other events) won't have to stay up til the ridiculous hour of 6AM just to watch a fight.
It also keeps the Europeans happy as it is a (probably a once off too) more accommodating time.

The other side is that there's approx 742 million people in Europe compared to the 318 million in the US. the potential market difference is huge.

And in literally any other setting whatsoever (not to mention the refs insisting upon Queen of Mayweather Rules ;) ), Mayweather would be lucky to last beyond the first few minutes.

They're completely different sports so it's a fairly pointless argument.

I imagine there are loads of people around the world who aren't even professional fighters that would deal with Mayweather quite easily if it was a row on the street.

Depends on your definition of "loads" as a percentage. Point I was getting at is that the skillset involved in high level MMA is far more vast than in boxing, I ust view them as superior sportspeople, for the most part.

And I suppose Limerick would hammer Man U under hurling regulations.

It's more vast but is it not a case of jack of all trades master of none.

    Top boxers are master craftsmen.

    McGregor
As an uneducated ****muncher, I disagree! :P

This will never happen. But I would love if Mayweather had 9 months to train for a fight against McGregor, UFC rules. Floyd would win with ease IMO, he is a superior athlete. Stronger, better technique and undeniably faster than McGregor. Even with the advantage of MMA rules, I could see Mayweather dealing with it, and just being too strong.

    I guess we'll never know. :P

An average pro MMA fighter would destroy mayweather. Submission within 30 seconds.

relatively speaking John O'Shea would be a decent MMA guy. decent in a lot of different positions/disciplines but not even being close to being a master of any

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,882 ✭✭✭Saipanne

    McGregor
I'm not sure. If he had 9 months training in addition to his vastly superior punching ability I think he would win.

He'd be world class on the ground in 9 months, starting from beginners

    lol

They certainly are, but a lot of MMA guys are masters of many crafts. Not to say that boxers are anything but incredibly skilled and disciplined in what they do, but the MMA guys simply do more.

Bottom line McGregor is decent at a bit of everything. Mayweather is absolutely world class in his chosen discipline.

No doubt you would see McGregor try and call Mayweather out in order to gain column inches, but Mayweather would never need to be the opposite.

Even higher level MMA guys are not in the same league as the pro boxers in terms of relevance
