If your dress is in any way complex or beaded etc, then I'd strongly recommend going to a dressmaker who specialises in wedding dresses for alterations. Not to mention, the zip yard are frightfully expensive. They quoted me €35 for very basic alterations to a high-street dress, but my dressmaker altered my whole wedding dress for €100!

I don't mind so much as I'm just planning on finding my style. I have an image in my head and have found a dress online that I love so I'm hoping to try on a similar style to confirm if I like it before I go ordering. Thanks for the zip yard recommendation too, they are just down the road!

Faith I have heard that about them being expensive too! Who done your dress?

That's a good idea chew chew. There will be a good few offers on again and sample sales too. I thought I would definitely go with a fishtail but in the end I only liked one fish tail on me. I would've went for that one but I preffered the one I went with that bit more. Its a fit and flare

A dressmaker and seamstress in Cork did mine. She also designs and makes her own gowns so she really knows her way around a wedding dress.

Irishgirl I know you're, geographically, near me and I actually have had a lady who does alterations recommended to me a few times. My mam is actually amazing at alterations but she goes to this woman for her own stuff!

I'm super excited about dress shopping! More for my bridesmaids though :D

Ah thats great thanks. I'd rather go to a seamstress. Me too will probably leave bridesmaids until next year though

Is anyone thinking of doing anything a bit different they want to share? Not trying to pinch ideas (oh, what a lie!) but be interesting to hear what ye have planned.

We're hoping to do a first look early and then have our ceremony around 3.30 and straight into wine and then dinner with no waiting around for photos. Get all that out of the way early so we can
Spend as much time as possible with friends and family. :) Just talking to my Dad at the weekend and it turns out my folks wedding didn't start til 4 and was black tie- quite the scandal in rural Ireland in the early 70's! Well, that and my Dad converting to COI to marry my Mam. :D

I presume this thread isn't just for the Brides! Myself and my partner are getting married August 2017 and we've planned with the photographer & videographer to take our couple pictures in the morning before the ceremony. We'll be staying in the hotel room together the night before anyway so it's not an issue seeing each other before the ceremony.

So hopefully we'll have most of it done (except the bridal party & family etc) before the drinks reception. Gives us more time to hang out with the guests and drink prosecco!

That's our plan too. Since we're both brides seems weird for one of us to have to stay at home and the other get a night in a hotel alone!!! :D

Same as us! Didn't want to have to toss a coin to see who gets the suite the night before the wedding as we're leaving town for the wedding..

We're incredibly lucky to have the venue to ourselves with lots of outside space. I do not want a stuffy, formal kind of wedding at all. I was going to get a few one those giant garden games like Jenga, Connet 4, Croquet. Hopefully it'll be a scorcher of a day and people will be outside sipping on their drinks having lots of fun :)

I'm still researching funkier ideas too :)

I was thinking of getting an indoor bouncy castle to keep kids entertained but in saying that I haven't ran it by the hotel yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

That sounds deadly! We're having a winter wedding but if there was a possibility of good weather is love the games! Sounds like great fun :)

In other news, we won an engagement shoot today! We entered at a wedding fair a few weeks ago and it's with a photographer we really like so yay!

  • Registered Users Posts: 213 ✭✭glen25

Nice one, congrats. Our photographer threw in a free photoshoot with our package which was sound!

Oh that sounds great. Hopefully our hotel let us. Kids get very bored at these things

I was at a wedding fair a few weeks ago and there were a couple of kids clubs there that run special kids clubs at weddings with activities and stuff. Not sure how much (since we won't really have kids at ours, didn't really bother looking at them in detail) but might be worth looking into?

Yeah ill have to look into it. I haven't even been to one wedding fair yet! :-(

They're kinda head melting tbh. The vendors can get a little crazed. The hotels were very pushy even when we told them we had a venue. "What about the hen night?!!?" We just ended up talking to a couple of photographers and taking fliers from others and going through them at home. Dumped most of them once we could actually think clearly.

Yeah i did the same thing baby and crumble. I think most of my bookings are from recommendations.

Best way to do it to be honest, myself and herself went to the RDS wedding show and we just picked up brochures from any places that interested us, when we got home we just kept cycling through them until we limited it to a few places we wanted to go and see, we feel it worked well and talking to them at the event would have been a real headache.

I used to take a stand at the wedding journal show but what I found is that brides and (dragged along) grooms :D got bombarded by several suppliers offering the same product and most times would just booked the cheapest without actually checking any of them out properly to see if they are the right fit for your wedding and for you.

I found sites like WOL and the likes had a certain clique and if you didn't fall into what was expected you wouldn't get the best information. I love the weddings sections of boards. I am doing this DJ thing nearly 30 years and I still learn things from other brides & grooms to be. I find this forum to be one of the best sources for advice for all things weddings!

We now live in a digital age and with that comes the power of google. Sit down and search for the best rated hotels, photographers, photo booth, make up, DJs, no bands though they're all rubbish!!!! :D:D:D Ask LOADS of questions! The final thing is ask for a personal recommendation from someone you know.

So if any 2017 brides have any questions about anything to do with weddings please ask. I will do my best to help.

Well, we've picked out our engagement rings! Just waiting for mine to be resized. It's a serious bit of kit, I'm delighted with it. Hers is an old family heirloom and it already fit her perfectly which is awesome. Hopefully putting down deposits this week on hotel and officiant and then I'm going to chill out for a while.

    Hopefully. :p

Baby and crumble that's great!! Say you both are relieved! :D what month are ye again?

I went (obligatory) dress shopping at the weekend. Definitely found my style. Oh my god the attached price tags! Scandalous!!

B&C what kind of outfit are you planning?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 364 ✭✭lovelystuff

Thought I'd hop back in because we've had a very productive few weeks! We have the venue, humanist, band, makeup, hair, flowers and cake booked! Meeting our preferred photographer next week, then hoping to get the video and ceremony music booked. Its nice getting things ticked off so we can just enjoy the run up. I'm planning zero diy, I just want a relaxed day :)

We're November. We thought we were so ahead
Of the curve with venue and stuff! But we're super happy with our date and venue. And our registrar too.

I identify as butch so my outfit will be more like something a guy would wear. Current plan is a matching burgundy velvet blazer and waistcoat, grey trousers and a bow tie. I quite into the whole dapper thing- so most likely it'll take a lot to make me happy. I'm quite particular in my own way. ;)

And I've been watching say yes to the dress. Jesus the prices!!!!

Can anyone recommend hair in Dublin?

    Hi guys,

We plan on getting married in 2017. We are going engagement ring shopping shortly. Should we go to Antwerp or buy it in Ireland? Any advice appreciated.

Sounds fantastic B&C!! I love the idea of burgundy velvet. Can kinda picture it :D

I watched say yes to the dress last Friday for the first time. I actually had tears from laughter. The most ridiculous nonsense I've ever seen in my life :D
