I predict chad will win by tko from ground and pound or getting Connors back and getting a rear naked choke locked.

Personally, I've seen nothing from Mendes that suggests either of these outcomes will happen.

When he shoots and gets takedowns, he generally just puts his weight on his opponent to tire them out and uses the time to rest himself. For someone with such good wrestling, he's not actually much to fear when he takes it to the ground aside from draining your stamina. Given he's coming into the fight on short notice and therefore isn't likely to be as well conditioned, I think he'll certainly be looking to do the same thing as he always does, if not moreso, with his takedowns in order to take rounds. I'd be astonished if he opened up on the ground and won via ground and pound or a choke.

I think his last submission win was about 5 or 6 years ago, while he dropped Guida, Elkins, Meza and McKenzie on his feet.

Conor didnt prepare just for a standup with Aldo. He has said himself that he felt once Aldo felt how hard Conor hits that he would resort to wrestling so he was prepared for that also.

So you believe Connors camp prepared for aldo, one of the greatest strikers in the division with crazy leg kicks etc the same Way as they did for chad, one of the best wrestlers in the division because they believe aldo, a 10 year champ who has weathered many a storm would basically fold because Connor punches really hard? Cool.

the way i look at it is

conor knows full well what chad is going to do , we all have jobs / kids etc so we come on here in flutters through the day etc throwing our opinions etc

but conor thinks and sleeps about fighting , he knows all the stats etc this whole " he was submitted twice " argument is tripe , he record was 4-2 when he last lost by sub , and that was 5 years ago , a fighter can change sooo much in that time , its testament to his punching and stand up ability that hasn't needed to wrestle , sure i find grappling boring as hell , id rather a throw down anyday

but make no mistake he is ready for a ground war too , friend of mine trained with them all in sbg and he said to me " conor is so quick on the ground " plus you can't keep him down and if gunni nelson says he's good id believe him over ass chin faber anyday

Only had a chance to watch the press conference there! I can see nothing that suggests Mendes is rattled to be honest. I'm probably most excited for the Lawlor fight to be honest and I think we will have a 5 round war on our hands with Rory prevailing.
Regarding McGregor I hope he does it but I've no idea how good he is to be honest. It's easy to implement your own game plan against someone like Siver, etc. Tomo will answer a lot of questions and I cannot wait for it. Honestly no idea but the unknown factor has me swaying towards Mendes getting it in the championship rounds. The prospect of Aldo Mendes 3 does nothing for me though.
Although not the forums favourite fighter I hope Pendred goes 5-0 and gets a good billing on the Dublin show against a decent ranked opponent.
Roll on the weigh ins which should provide some sparks between McGregor and Mendes.

Although I think mendes will win, I do think he seemed a little rattled by Conor.

So basically what you're saying Is, we all have our opinions but McGregor is an animal and he's going to win.

Because if he was worried about the wrestling he would let everyone know before the biggest fight of his life, cause hes a sound lad.

People were saying MENDES was rattled? Wow, if anyone it was McG, the weight cut seems to be taking it's toll. He was almost slurring his words, and then i cringed when he put on the dublin mammy voice when he repeated the 'men band together when they are close to death' i guess he just read that in a book recently.

I didn't think any of that at all to be honest

Nope, they both seem grand. Mendes seems to dislike McGregor, that's about the height of it.

None of them were rattled at all, it was a tame but enjoyable press conference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,454 ✭✭✭slicus ricus

Agreed, both of them seemed fine.

Brandao and Poirier were rattled by Conor in the press conferences, Siver and Mendes were not.

Mendes seems quite chilled about the whole thing to me. If anything, it was his coach in the hotel who was rattled rather than Mendes himself.

Still think McGregor will win the fight but Mendes most definitely won't be a beaten man before the bell rings - Conor will have to work very hard to beat him.

I wouldn't say Mendes is rattled, maybe a little frustrated that he doesn't have the wit of Conor.

Conor will crack a one liner and everyone laughs, Mendes just doesn't seem to be able to respond very well.

After each McGregor jab, the best Mendes could come up with was "yeah well I'm gonna destroy you dude" or "I can't even understand you".

If he was worried about the wrestling he wouldnt have taken the fight, he could easily have either sat out (like pretty much every fighter does when theyve a guaranteed title shot) or taken an easy fight at 155

He looks hugely uncomfortable in that press conference setting, hes lucky he didnt have to go through the world tour like Aldo did

I think we can all agree that Conor is better at the one liners and the media stuff in general than Chad and that he is generally more comfortable in that environment than Chad is. I would say McGregor actually enjoys it while Mendes sees it as a pain in the as$, hence the frustration/lack of witty response from Mendes. I get the impression that Mendes knows his role in the media stuff and knows he's not going to get the better of McGregor in the verbals anyway.

Who pissed in your corn flakes? What I believe is my opinion, it has no impact on what you believe. Its actually what his coach and he both said in videos more so than my opinion. Sure arent you the lad that thinks Mendes will win by submission, something he hasnt done since April 24, 2010..and a rear naked choke no less..something he has done once in his career..his first fight in 2008? Cool.
