Dartz if it hapened me Id probably take off my exhaust from the cat back for some essential maintainance as its too loud. Usually takes a week or so to fix them up.

seriously though maybe youve a hole in it somewhere.

RX8. Yeah. They showed up. I showed them the fresh disk. Neighbour got a bollicking and they warned me to do it as soon as I got the disk next time, because technically the offense is not displaying, or something.

It's surely not that loud is it? My neighbours used to love my Cooper S :P

Used to live a few doors down from a guy with an E46 M3 - was lovely hearing it fire up first thing of a morning

If it makes you feel better, I ran over one in Cabra there during the week. Dopey ****er was just standing there in the road staring at me until I drove over it.

You know those things can fly without their head?

Depends, I often go game shooting, they don't fly well with a hape of lead shot in them...

As for your neighbours what a shower of c*nts. Sounds a right contrary bunch to live near

So theres a slight lingering question mark over the car outside - with the power steering - namely - why does it lose/use fluid over time.

the aim/hope - is to keep the thing for the long term.

Stupid as this sounds - its just a lot more appealing to have it looking at me every time i walk out to the garage each morning.

So world - your going to have to bear with me - i think i will just take the hit on any parts it needs - new from Toyota and have it fixed for the long term.

Yes its silly - and im bad - but all that's being harmed is my wallet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,443 ✭✭✭Old diesel

The problem is - anything i might like to actually buy - means taking a bigger hit on the wallet - either because its expensive to buy - or because theres the risk of expensive repairs.

There was a nice Octavia (imo) linked to in a thread here a few weeks ago - white 1.2 tsi - 2013 - old shape - nice spec - with leather and wood and other bits.

Probably get it for 16 k - well its sold now - but you get the idea.

That's 16 k to buy the car - and life being what it is - theres always the risk of repair bills somewhere down the line - its a car - it happens.

Take a hit on repairs on the Toyota - and drive on with (imo) better overall reliability in the long term.

Anyone see the ad for the fiat 500x? Someone in their advertising department deserves a cookie. Its brilliant

@old diesel I'm not sure what car you have exactly but if it's not worth huge money you could always drive it on just keeping an eye on the power steering fluid level although it probably isn't really a long term solution. My parents had an ix35 with the same problem and it needed a new steering rack under warranty which probably wouldn't be cheap if that is the problem could be the pump either etc.

As for changing your car it's almost a given that (except in very rare cases of high running cost) the cheapest option is to keep your current car. But then it is nice to have a change and have a different car. I suppose it depends if you think it's worth spending the money on. But at the same time you can't look at it like I can't buy a new car incase something goes wrong with it sh!t happens you just deal with it when and if it happens. For what it's worth my parents octavia has yet to have any issues and it's 3.5 years old with 110k km. bulbs servicing tyres that's about as far as spending money on it goes.

That's the thing - its worth bugger all - but.....

Id like to actually have the thing around for the long term - albeit not perhaps as a daily driver.

would be nice to have the option of firing it up and taking it for a drive from time to time.

Also - its VERY reliable - and imo - more reliable then a lot of newer cars - in particular - anything i might want to have instead of it.

As i see it - i can spend 15 k on something - still have repair bills in the coming years.

Or just take that hit on the Corolla that's currently sitting outside.

Are you both sharing the merc for now is it ? As iirc you got rid of the alfa. You'll find once there not extremely busy they will get all the work sorted and the car out to you reasonably quickly makes the most business although I don't need to say that everyone here knows how cash flow works.

It should be a very comfortable cruiser even on long trips.

Yeah we are sharing the merc at the minute
I'm very happy with the crowd I bough from, dealt with them years ago when I lived there and they were a pleasure to deal with today half an hour a bit of chat and we were done.

Really looking forward to seeing it with the few bits done
@ old diesel the oh has a fifteen year old merc and rather than replace it after checking out ads for months he's putting money into it

Cars like any other system give trouble overtime things go faulty they wear they break etc. Although you could argue new cars are not as reliable most of that is down to complexity the more complex it is the more likely to break.

I mean take your corolla and compare it to a mid spec 3-4 year old car or whatever, so straight away the Corolla has no on board computer, side airbags, stability control, traction control, a/c, electric windows ?, electric mirrors , no fancy bluetooth radio systems, no multifunction steering wheel, climate control and cruise control no, Central locking probably not, alarm system will be basic and we are starting to see why the Corolla is more reliable that stuff can't break if the car doesn't have it. But then I'd personally rather have all the creature comforts. And please don't get me wrong I'm not trying to specifically down your car or anything it's more just a general statement on old vs new.

Anyway why not buy something for 5k it hardly has to be a feast or a famine you could buy something nice for 5k.

Ah in some ways it can be nice to have a bit of a wait makes you appreciate the car more and get excited about it. I remember on the odd occasion my parents sharing cars generally for a short space of time but always ended in a disaster. It can work out well though just depends on your schedules and often you both need the car.

I hate new cars and see all the extras as stuff to go wrong

It's wired really well for us as we both work from home and werewere able to coordinate and use public transport or rent cars when we needed

Bizarrely it made us a better couple as we had to be more considerate

It's not loud.... the fumes from the exhaust make the kid's eyes water or something.

Although, running a rotary open-piped would be just a little bit funny.

No I need at least some extras can't deal with a car that has nothing on it I just find them boring. I'm struggling to go back to a car that doesn't have auto lights ffs sure I suppose I can just drive around with the DRL's on all the time thats what everyone else seems to do :pac:

It's all about the extras for me and the refinement/quality. I couldn't go without A/C or Cruise now at the very least to be honest.

You wanna get a diesel lad. De cat, de dpf, blanked egr and its even more amazeballs for the environment.

Leave it running for a few mins every morning and evening. Mmm bask in that low CO2 feelgood

Just had my mirror kicked off by some utter scrote in Douglas, Cork. Letting off steam by fantasizing about what I would have liked to do to them if I was there at the time. Hardly worth reporting?

Estimates for right hand mirror assembly quotes? 09 Vectra. Them and Astras are common as muck but it's the motorized and heated model.
