When it comes to gaming hardware, I know who I'd be going with if given a choice between Nvidia & Valve...

Don't think valve are going to be producing, also think Nvidia have been doing a lot of kernel stuff on SteamOS so it may not even end up being a choice between the two

There are a LOT of Scots in town today. Looks like they travelled in numbers.

I'm looking forward to the game later myself, hope we get the win.

It'll be interesting to see if the Irish are allowed bring in any Anti Delaney banners too.

Actually speaking of the Scots, does anyone remember their best/worst official song of '98 World Cup

Just don't come home too soon

Are you not allowed back pass to your keeper in the box in football? Never knew that

Yup. Came in after USA 94 I think. Indirect free kick from spot of offence. Led to Alan Shearer smashing in some 10 yard free kicks in his day.

What's the rule exactly? And why?

Keeper prohibited from handling the ball when a team-mate has deliberately kicked the ball to him, or handling the ball directly from a team-mate's throw-in.
The back-pass rule was introduced in 1992 to discourage time-wasting and overly defensive play after the 1990 World Cup

Yea and it's specific to the ball being passed back to the keeper with any part of your leg. You can head or chest the ball back to the goalkeeper all you want.

It's not the box, if you kick the ball to the keeper from anywhere on the pitch he cant handle it. If you head the ball from anywhere or play it off any other part of your body from anywhere on the pitch he can pick it up

Didn't see the match but it didn't sound great

Didn't they need to win that to have any chance of qualifying?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

We really did need to win, yeah.

We're not technically out yet but will prob have to beat both Germany, in Dublin, and Poland, in Poland, to have a chance. As well as winning against Gibraltar and Georgia.

We had alot of the ball but couldn't create many good chances. Their goal took a big deflection too.

Ye won't beat Germany or Poland IMO. O'Neill is too conservative.

    Yeah can't see that happening

We don't need to beat both to have a chance. If we beat Poland (and Georgia and Gibraltar) then (assuming we get nothing home to Germany) Poland need more than one point from travelling to Germany and Scotland, which they're unlikely to get.

Did a charity cycle today, 80km. Going up last 2 hills my quads and hamstrings cramped up, in both legs. Nearly fell off the bike, and almost cried with the pain... Felt bad enough, til a middle-aged woman (I'd say 55yo) cycled merrily past me... on a hybrid touring bike! :o:o

Poland are a handy enough team though, I dunno if we can beat them over there. Draw maybe, but not sure on beating them.

Cathal Pendred should have stuck with the rugby. He'll be the first 4 - 0 fighter to be dropped from the UFC. He's winning but jaysus is he poor at everything other than grappling.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

    That's abit harsh.

The guy he was fighting tonight was very non confrontational and I thought Pendred couldn't do anymore to force the fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,320 ✭✭✭Teferi

Ah it's not. He might as well take a running start with his punches they are so laboured and some of the kicking he showed tonight you wouldn't see from a first year Tae Kwon Do student. He is just so slow at everything. Cracking grappler but when he meets a ranked opponent he is going to be eaten by them. Honestly, it just looks like he is constantly moving through water.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

He still won and while he may not go down as the best fighter ever he's still winning so fair play to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,320 ✭✭✭Teferi

He's got all the heart in the world but he is painfully average. Kavanagh should be locking him in a room somewhere for 6 - 8 months with a top boxing trainer and maybe a few rounds with a kick coach too. I'd also note his lack of explosive power which for an ex-back row is surprising. It's just so strange. He looks like he'd tick all the boxes you could ask for. He's a big, strong athletic unit.

Fair play to him for winning but I can't see him much above this level if he doesn't drastically improve.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

So be it, lets enjoy him competing at such a high level.

It doesn't sit well with me when someone wins that people immediately have a go at him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,320 ✭✭✭Teferi

Surely I can be critical of the nature of the win/wins while still being happy for an Irishman doing well?

Do you not agree with the points raised above re: punching, kicking and explosive power?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,341 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Maybe? It was a tough fight though as he was always chasing his opponent.

I'm just happy that he won. I don't see the need for every fighter to be a straight away belt contender, he may never be, but he's still competing at a high level.

Hell and back today, think I'll need the sun cream. Friend did it yesterday and it took her 4.5 hours, hope she's defective as it's never taken me more than 2.45 before.
