Is it just me or are these products kind of pointless given that most NES consoles actually still work? Or am I missing something?

    Agreed
    Let's see...

    No region encoding
Integrated support for both NES and Famicom carts
Ability to scale image for HDTV's with no hardware induced lag, so no need for Framemeisters (lag will still vary on a display level for HDTV's)
    Proper RGB support
    Overclocking

In short, it's a more premium experience than a regular NES, and unlike that AES from about a week back, it has analogue outputs, so you can play to your heart's content on a PVM.

The only thing I'd be interested in there is proper RGB support, in which case I think I'd rather spend the cash on modifying actual hardware with a Playchoice 10 chip or that other recent RGB mod board you can get.

Region lockout removal, NES and Famicom carts I can do with a regular Famicom.

Overclocking is more of a 'pushing hardware passed it's intended limit' exercise than something you're going to use a lot while playing. So it's fun to see original hardware do it, but new hardware? nah.

I'd rather spend a large chunk of change on a framemeister which would scale everything I own and have it all integrated rather than just one console.

I dunno, as I said, I just don't get it. For me, part of the whole experience is using the actual original console.

I wonder how you can trumpet the console that was the NES/Famicom, denigrate the efforts of the actual builder of the console and most of the must have games, with respect to the NES Mini, and then promote your own "better than life" very very expensive NES machine.
It may not be an emulator in the same fashion as VC or Retron5, or NES Mini for that matter, but it isn't original hardware.
So, you've a device, relying on nostalgia, telling you that your nostalgic feelings are misplaced, but that this is better.
Might as well play them on a PC with a decent emulator as use one of those, even the prompted controller is a wireless replica.
Just buy a NES and a Famicom, mod them into RGB and play your carts that way.

I've a RGB modded NES and you what ? It looks wrong on a larger screen, its fantastic on a 21" but just wrong on my 29". The low res sprites are just too chunky and crisp.

I suppose you only have to consider some typical Famicom/NES playing arrangements to see that you are absolutely right

    That's dire!

I wonder how many times he's put on a yellow wig and debased himself for some small change in personalised videos?

You'd think he would have become a show Producer or some other sort of thing. It seems to be the path for all these 80's and 90's TV people.
I used to work for RTE and pretty much everyone you knew from TV in the 80's and 90's that's vanished from the screens is now a radio or TV producer with a comfy chair and a small to medium size team of people working for them.

    $62.99 + $21.25 shipping.

    No SD?
Well, that's me out so :(

    Just kidding!

Actually I'd love one of these.
I'm pretty happy with my Snes collection as it stands, not too big, I'd say ample....
    Are they region free?

The Supaboy is decent, but be prepared to take it apart and do a little work to improve the build quality.
I opened my one and re-soldered a few cables and used a good amount to Sugru to stop the back-light on it leaking through the plastic case and side of the screen.

    Edit:
It plays some PAL games, but most US and Jap ones. So worth keeping in mind depending on your collection.
    SD2SNES works perfect on it.

Yeah I was just going to say - any videos I watched of it at the time always showed US carts being played, never PAL. From what I remember the screen is supposed to be decent enough? Comparable to a modded Nomad screen?

Yeah, the screen is pretty decent(the back light is badly sealed, hence the Sugru I used) and I'd more or less the same quality as the Nomad mod.

    I don't think I'll bother so.
    They do look nice though...
But Hyperkin just don't seem capable of making the hardware to a high enough standard.
The Retron5 is ropey at best, I'm still wrenching out carts from that thing.

Playing around with the XRGB today. The reduction is lag is a real eye opener. Everything just plays so much better. I think I'll take another stab at Super Mario Bros again and try and beat it. I can't use the lag excuse though!

The Assault Suit Leynos (Target Earth) remake just landed on steam out of the blue. Made by the same team that made the awesome Gunhound.
