Reminds me of importing my Namco Museum Collection and wondering what was the deal with the delay.
Essentially Customs had no idea what it was, they waiting until I rang before deciding to take me roughly from behind without dinner first.
Man, that was an expensive and painful day :(
    But totally worth it!

I not nabbed for customs on a 3DO M2 recently, now that was pain
So I think I deserve a pass on this screen (which wasn't even that pricey) :)

    To Photoshop!!!!

I think he has the idea of a full set of original Xbox titles in the back of his mind... I have to say, I enjoy collecting for the Xbox myself :)

don't think I'd ever want to do a console's full library, every console has it's share of shovelware, and wouldn't want to have them for the sake of having them.

btw, has anyone else seen the money CeX are offering for Pokemon games on the ds/3ds right now?
€43 CASH for Pokemon X, €44 for Heartgold, €37 for White V2, €35 for Alpha Saphire etc.
good time to sell if you were tight for money

    Hmmm...

    No!
    Noooo!
    Away foul tempter!!!

I have a complete edition of SoulSilver, and zero chance of caring enough to play it!
But it looks so purdy in the collection, I want to keep it!

I think some folks here have a fondness for Aliens (the awesome 80's movie)?
It's been shown on a big ass screen with a live orchestra at the end of September - http://bordgaisenergytheatre.ie/index.php/artist/aliens-live-the-rte-concert-orchestra. Looks like the decent tickets remaining are €58.50 each though. Ouch.
Anyway, thought some folks here might have an interest. :)

Funny thing is they pay the same, with or without the Pokewalker.

Here's an interesting one, an enhancement Master System emulator and the basic idea is that you can replace the original tiles/sprites with hidef ones but retaining the original game logic.

Holy **** that's really cool alright!

Does anyone know what programs/tools are used these days for pixel art? I'd really love to get back into drawing after being away from it for far too long and think that might just be the thing to interest me.

I dabbled a little with this - http://www.piskelapp.com/ - fairly decent as a free tool and plenty of videos on Youtube about it.

Retr0 might have better suggestions though.

I saw that advertised a little while ago and really wanted to go, until I saw the price :(

Aliens is one film I've never actually seen on a big screen either, much to my shame!

I'd imagine not many of us were old enough to watch when it was released though, I haven't seen it on the big screen either. I do remember getting my older brother to rent it on video for me but the mother made us return it a few minutes into the film. :(

I've not heard of piskelapp. What I used to use was mspaint surprisingly for quick projects in college and touch them up in photoshop, although I did in photoshop was add the mask colour to hide the background.

I find photoshop a total pain to use. It adds a bilinear effect to all pixels which looks disgusting and I've not figured out how to turn it off and while it has a huge suite of tools and effects I just find it confusing to use and for pixel art and everything takes about 3-4 times longer. And when I figure it out and come back to it I've forgotten everything and have to start from scratch.

What I use now is a Japanese program (it's in English though) called GraphicsGale: https://graphicsgale.com/us/

It's got the precision of MS paint yet has all the features you need from photoshop for pixel art, the most important being layers. I'm using this now for my current game and its a godsend. It's so much easier to use than photoshop and the layers feature is excellent, I can do my pixel art as layers but my sprites will be imported into the game as multiple sprites independently animated (so for my main character I'll have legs, arms torso and head as independent sprites. Possible her hair and scarf as well but I might animate her scarf with rope physics, maybe the hair but I think it will look ****). It also just makes it far easier if you are doing a single sprite animation.

That and you can trace. You can put the previous image of the animation in the background and then adjust. I'm also getting in some artist models as well (cost an arm and a leg for anime proportion ones!) so I'll be taking pictures of them in poses at different angles and tracing over them using the layers feature.

A lot of people use GIMP but I feel it has the same photoshop problem of overcomplicating things.

Photoshop still has it's uses for transparency and blur effects.

They sent me the demo recently. I'll try to do a gameplay footage soon. The demo is so charming and enjoyable, it's shaping up to be a really nice little game I must say.

Interesting, I was going to be creating a level editor in gamemaker but if that can spit out an array for use in gamemaker then if might make things a but quicker.

Analogue has recently announced its new console, the Nt Mini, which is much like their previous NES/Famicom clone console, but with some fundamental differences.

    http://www.analogue.co/pages/nt-mini

The biggest difference being that instead of repurposing NES chips into a new motherboard, the Mini instead contains a field programmable gate array or "FPGA" chip that is intended to simulate (not emulate) the original console hardware. If you want to know more about what that means...

It's not emulation, it's hardware simulation. Recreating the logic gates inside an adaptive chip, instead of using the original chips. You could just as well clone the design of the original chips (which are fully documented) into a modern immutable chip, but the nature of the FPGA makes it possible to update the device should the designer have made mistakes.

Software emulation is trying to reproduce the output with no regards to the actual process, which can be adapted, modified, simplified, or even made completely differently. It results in computing frames by frames, with no regards to the authenticity of the inner process, or their order. Which is why emulation always have at least one frame of delay, but is very efficient in reproducing satisfactory results similar to observed original input / output.

Hardware simulation is to reproduce the design into a simulator, and observe the output. If the output isn't identical to the original, then the simulator has to be tweaked to simulate better (provided the design is in fact identical). Considering the world of electronics , FPGAs are a very solid chip simulator and any differences in the output may be attributed to the design reproduction.

It's a much more costly process than emulation and with a different goal, but when the simulation is good it behaves just like the original object: doing an undocumented, untested input on the simulator should output the same result as the real object would, whereas doing the same on an emulator would produce unreliable output that cannot be treated as an accurate output. It's not to say that an emulator cannot output an accurate result in the same conditions, but by design it cannot be used as proof that the original object would output the same result.

tl;dr: with emulation you tweak the code in a set box until the output is satisfactory. With simulation you put the object parameters in the box and you tweak the box until it can give real-life results.

For the NES it means no lag, identical response to inputs, identical compatibility with exotic peripheral and exotic code (like crazy demoscene stuff), and a much more expensive product than a cheap emulator box.
Oh. And uh, it's 20% smaller than the old model, so whatever.

Is it just me or are these products kind of pointless given that most NES consoles actually still work? Or am I missing something?
