I traded my 18 month old gti pp in and lost 7.5k on it which I consider pretty good and was just lucky tbh. I did the deal earlier in the year and don't think I would get as good now as values are defo down as the car market improves.
VW are not helping values with constant spec changes and cheap pcp deals on new cars.

I was in Western Motors in Drogheda recently to see what kind of deal I could do on my 152 Golf highline tdi with 30000 km only €22400 of a trade in value . The previous Golf I had 47000 km on it for the same trade in value .. The dealer told me that Volkswagen had devalued my 152 Golf by €1500 due to the higher spec 162 .. My monthly repayments would have gone from €328 to €450 ..

Personally I think changing from a 161 pp to a 171 R is madness for those kind of numbers. I would imagine you would regret it not long after. The two cars are too similar and you will rarely, if ever get to push the R properly.

I have to agree with vintage vrs in this.
I was very keen to move to the R and was quoted better figures than you kodirl but am very happy I didn't now.
They are very similar cars and I'm not sure in day to day you will notice huge differences. Ok when you push you will definitely but how often can any one drive like that?
For me it is too much money for something very similar butthe R is a great drive no doubt.

I mentioned above I was thinking of changing to a GTi so I brought my GTD (151) into the garage I bought it from, to get a quote against one.

I got the spreadsheet and a car which I bought for 40k, in May of last year, had serviced, is in immaculate condition... the trade in value was...
    €28,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What the actual f**k!?

I emailed the dealer and asked them to explain why the offer for my car was so low. I doubt I will get a reply that makes sense.

Doesn't surprise me, I've a friend in the motor trade who ran a valuation report on my car.
151 Gti PP which came out at 34.5k with a trade value of 27.8.
The motor trade don't appear to use monthly guide books anymore, now it's a live system that they feed information into on advertised price vs sale price and in return it guides their trade in offers.
My dealer mentioned 7k depreciation a year in general conversation but personally I'll probably jump at the 2.5 Year mark as Jan 18 onwards will have a huge amount of PCP R and Gti flooding back.

Yeah, I guess you're right regarding not getting to use the extra bhp in real world too often. It's funny really as I had been set on changing until the comments received from you all today... What did you go for yourself Carsfan2 when you decided against the R??

I've gone for a BMW 330e ( plug in hybrid) which is a bit of a sporting bargain in my opinion at the moment.
Gti pp is a great car and for the money to change to an r I felt it wasn't worth it and I do feel the r has higher running costs too on top of the price jump itself.

I was going to test it again some day with the boot completely empty and put in the key by itself with nothing else but I haven't gotten around to it.

Got a chance to do some testing with the spare key, and now I know what happened the day I got locked out.

I went through the same steps as before, starting with the car locked. I unlocked just the hatch, threw in the key and closed it. I watched the indicators and they did flash four times, and I squinted through the rear screen at the MFD and it had a warning on it. The hatch didn't lock and I was able to open it again.

However ... I tested the same thing again, and started the timer on my phone as soon as the hatch closed. After exactly two minutes, the indicators gave one more flash and then the hatch locked itself with the key inside. I tested again just to make sure and again after two minutes, the hatch locked.

So it gives you a grace period to fish out the keys, but then it will lock.

The day I got locked out of the car was bright and sunny so it wasn't obvious that the indicators had flashed a few more times. I had just thrown the backpack into the car and walked off and when I returned an hour later the car was all locked up :(

This weekend I went to the locksmith and got a copy made of the bladed part of the key. It's small enough to keep in my wallet so hopefully this won't be an issue ever again !

Is there still the option to lock/unlock the car using the key fob buttons, or is it just keyless and that's it?

Yes, the key is exactly the same as a non keyless car.

    That's interesting.
Another thing kinda related to this is, if you unlock the car but don't actually open any doors, the car will auto lock itself again after a minute or so. I've noticed too when it does this that the mirrors don't fold in.

    Hi Joe
Surprised u didn't know about this as it was definitely on my previous mk6&7 and nearly sure it was on the mk5 too.
Although it locks the car it doesn't arm the alarm system and possibly the deadlocks.

That's called basic car wash mode! :P

Full car wash mode involves the single pull down of the wiper stalk just after you have positioned the car properly for said wash. :)

    Just got an update from VW customer car;

We have checked your vehicle order and can confirm that production was completed on the 28th July 2016. The vehicle made the boat which docked in Dublin on the 1st August 2016.

Does anyone know how long it might be until I get it here in Cork?

    Thanks

Get on to your dealer and pressure him to put the squeeze on NVD (the car transporter guys). Mine also landed on a Sunday/Monday I remember and it was at the dealers on Thursday, but only because my salesman kept chasing them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

I had a 3-4 week wait because NVD were useless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Think r.o.r. Posted recently that nvd are way behind on deliveries due to volume. Up to 3 weeks behind I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 694 ✭✭✭Kagawa

Thanks, I'll ring dealer tomorrow and put the pressure on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Only once NVD check the car in can the dealer call it. As mentioned above, R.O.R mentioned NVD are well behind so it is possible your car isn't on their system yet. If it isn't, the dealer can't put any pressure on as the car isn't in the system yet. You could also be lucky and it could get through more quickly.

Also ask the dealer to tell NVD to mark your car "fragile"!!! My dealer did this for me which was both reassuring and worrying :pac:

Vw's have been doing this since the late 90's :)

    God that is worrying! Thanks,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I really wouldn't do that. Seriously Joe, you asked your dealer to mark your car as fragile? It's not like the NVD guy was gonna jump in with a fag in his mouth, put it out on your seat then handbrake it around the car park before keying it, and then see the "fragile" sign and change his ways. Every car is fragile to them I would imagine as any damage in transit will be out of their pocket?

Maybe I am missing something, or else this is a wind up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

lol, I didn't ask them, the dealer did!

NVD are notorious for damaging cars in transit by the way... they even have their own bodyshop. Not trying to worry Kagawa, I'm sure his will be handled with kid gloves!!

    Oh I knew that alright.
I was just pointing out in the earlier post that I'd noticed that the mirrors don't auto fold in when it auto locks in that scenario. Possibly the alarm doesn't arm either, not 100% sure about that.

I'm sure it'll be fine ;) But do have a good look over it when it arrives... check for scuffs, door dings, marks on the wheels, etc...
