Yes, but he wants to change the oil more frequently than the recommended minimum.

No. It was an on-off offer, I didn't get it.

It's a software update for a few bugs, main one being where the screen is randomly blank on first startup. Maps are separate, you need to download those yourself.

Thanks. Didn't know that they wouldn't updates maps.. Would you know why is that?

They might if you ask them, but it wouldn't be part of the normal routine. They might have the latest version on an SD card and just give you that.

That said, very little map data would have changed in a year, certainly on Irish roads anyway.

Made an enquiry today with a reference code from the VW site, looking for a quote to change to a GTi from my GTD and was told..

"The 0% applies to vehicles which are registered before the 31st of July.

Specific build vehicles do not apply unfortunately."

They did the same thing in January. Stock cars only.

Well apparently there is one "stock" GTi, and it is specced to over 45k!

The one I "built" online was 38k so....

38k would be fairly "standard" spec I'd imagine? Beware the online configurator, it's useless, completely all over the shop.

yep - fairly standard, but was told GTis are very short on the lots at the moment. At that price, an R would be cheaper.

Looks like I'll be hanging onto mine for a bit longer.. the 0% was the only thing that would swing me

Would the Clubsport tempt you? That's around 45k.... About €450 less than an R!

To be frank, I haven't got the money for a 45k car tbh. The one GTi on their lot is priced at a level I can't see shifting given the R is cheaper.

I have a 151 GTD and wanted the change to something similar, but a 151 GTi would have 5.9 % interest and so I thought about a new one at 0%. Probably will hang onto it for at least another year

Well I got my R in the end. Loving it 😊 I have a question regarding keyless entry. I saw the video a few months ago of the guys breaking into a 5 series using a deflector or an antenna of some sort to gain access. Are VW susceptible to this also? I'm guessing that Rs are a bit more attractive to the professional criminals but I'd like to see a statistic or two. Maybe being a bit precious with my new purchase but I park in a couple of dodgy enough areas during the week as a result of work

I've never read or heard any reports of VW's being taken that way. No point worrying about it IMO. If they want the car bad enough they'll get it...

Just be careful not to do what I did ... leave keys in a backpack, throw said backpack in the boot and close the hatch.

Not fun when the car locks itself and your spare key is two hours away :(

The car will detect when the keys are inside the passenger area and will refuse to lock. But it doesn't detect if the keys are in the boot.

Not true. No idea how you managed that but I've done the same thing a few times and the car refuses to re-lock. A warning comes up on the MFD too saying something like "Keys detected inside" or words to that effect.

    Definitely true, coz it happened.

Car was fully locked. I walked up to the boot with keys in range (as they were in the backpack I was holding, a fact I had forgotten at that point). The hatch unlocked and I opened it, but the rest of the car stayed locked. Then I put the backpack/keys into the boot and closed it. The hatch locked, so now the whole car was locked with keys inside. That's exactly how it happened.

To prevent it happening again, I am planning to get an access key , i.e. a copy of the bladed part and keep it in my wallet or whatever. At least then I will be able to unlock the doors and drop the seats to get into the boot.

BTW I called VW support because I thought it was a fault. I told them about the above sequence of events and they agreed that under these specific circumstances, it is possible to lock the keys in the boot.

I think it's quite impressive it can detect the difference between inside and a few cm outside.

I've had 2 MK7's with keyless. I've done exactly as you described a few times and the car doesn't lock. The indicators flash a few times and an error appears in the dash. Just to be sure, I tried it here again 5 minutes ago and same result!

It really should not happen as you described it.

That's really interesting , so it seems hit and miss. Because first thing I did while waiting for rescue that day was do some googling and the first hit was on vwroc, where same thing happened to someone else with a MK7 R.

    http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/6009-the-day-i-locked-myself-out-of-car-and-home/

Seems you are safe but I'd still recommend other owners check their cars so they know if this is a possibility for them.

Only thing I can think of is maybe your key was so buried in the bag and obstructed by other items (laptop?) that the car didn't sense it as the boot lid closed.... And boom, car locks! Seems unlikely though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭hazbot

I wondered about that too, but there was nothing out of the ordinary in the boot that day, no laptops or tablets or other metallic objects or electronic gadgets blasting out wifi or bluetooth to potentially cause interference. The keys were in a cheapo canvas type backpack, with nothing much else inside there. A couple of fleeces scattered around.

I was going to test it again some day with the boot completely empty and put in the key by itself with nothing else but I haven't gotten around to it. To be honest, for me personally it's a bit of a moot point now... even if I tested it 100 times and it successfully avoided locking itself 100 times, or if I went back to VW and they said they fixed it by replacing something or other - I'd always have that nagging feeling. If the system could be defeated by having certain contents in the boot, it might happen again some day. And I got enough of a slagging the first time!

Thanks for testing it on your car btw. I'd be interested to hear if any other folks on the thread got a chance to test (just don't blame me if you get locked out :p )

If you have the spare key ready to hand, you should give it a try again. Only takes a few seconds!
    I just:
    - locked car
    - walked to boot and pressed VW badge to open
    - threw key into the boot
    - closed down the hatch.

    - hazards flashed 3-4 times and I could see through the glass that an error flashed up in the MFD.

I've placed them in the boot and the car simply starts flashing the indicators warning you that the key is in the boot and it won't lock. So not sure what happened in your case

Just saw Joe reply, I never looked at the dash. Must check this out

    Annnnnnyyhooooo..

I mentioned above I was thinking of changing to a GTi so I brought my GTD (151) into the garage I bought it from, to get a quote against one.

I got the spreadsheet and a car which I bought for 40k, in May of last year, had serviced, is in immaculate condition... the trade in value was...
    €28,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What the actual f**k!?

I emailed the dealer and asked them to explain why the offer for my car was so low. I doubt I will get a reply that makes sense.

I was offered 28k for my 132 GTI in November '14 for a change to 151. I held off and went back to them in March with a view to changing up to 152. I got 29.5k for the GTI then :pac:

So I say hold tight / shop around.

Flip it over and put yourself in the shoe's of a potential buyer of a GTD.

How much cheaper than a new one would a year old GTD have to be before you'd buy the used one?

The answer is a good bit cheaper, and that's why you've had such a poor trade in value against it. Dealer will need to retail it €8,000 ish less than a brand new one to get someone in to it. With the cheap PCP and 01% finance on new cars, the value of 1 year olds has taken a hit, and that's been amplified by the drop in sterling as well.

It will probably be worth about the same this time next year if there's isn't substantially more mileage on it.

I've a 152 A5 here that came back off lease early. It was a touch over €60k retail when it was new. 11,000km on and the most we were offered for it was €37,000! Thankfully I've found a home for it for 9 months - again, probably worth around the same when it comes back early next year as it is now, but a lot depends on the sterling exchange rate.
