That's because you don't get out of 3rd gear nor get the engine hot on your commute!

Old age will come to us all eventually Senecio :D

Whilst as I've said earlier cars are a matter of personal taste I think it's fair to say that the RS is top of the heap in terms of dynamics etc. right now.

That AMG A Class Merc. is the quickest I think.

No disputing that the RS is the current hot hatch champion. I just wouldn't buy one. The R has everything I need/want in spades. 300hp, AWD, practicality and understated looks. Perfect.

I think the GTI actually looks better than an R.

Complete with cheating 1.6/2.0 Tdi's, and iffy 1.4TSI twincharged engines?

I think the GTI actually looks better than an R.

Most of us have said that before, but the price point of the PP Gti and now clubsport were and are too close to the R to justify less power and 2wd over a car that looks a bit better.

I think the GTI actually looks better than an R.

Lots of people say that and I wouldn't disagree. I've had a string of GTI's and they have a certain character and look that the R doesn't have. No one other than car nuts know what an R is. Most people have at least heard "GTI", it's a brand that the R doesn't have.
That said, there is no way on earth that a shiny lapiz blue R could be called subtle. I never had anyone ask me about the GTI's. I regularly get lads asking me about the R at petrol stations, etc. Granted it's the colour but it does stand out as being a bit out of the ordinary.

Haha but even if they cheated they are still the best :)

Tbh you're in the wrong thread if you're going to go down the bull**** tabloid headline route. Keep it on topic on the merits of the GTI / R versus the ford. We're all petrol heads here and have no interest in the Joe soap diesel gate nonsense.

That's frankly none of your business.
Boy racers can't afford either car.

    They are direct competitors.

These are mega hatch performance cars - VW finance is a strawman argument.

Too many comparison tests suggest that there is a clear winner.

Man, it's a thread for discussion of Golfs, populated by people who have spent 40-50k on Golfs. Really quite unnecessary to be honest.

It's a open discussion thread surely?

Whats the amount to be paid by VW again? It's far from nonsense.

It is of course. But you are clearly on this thread for a rise as is typical of you. You don't own an RS or an R, nor do you aspire to owning either so what's the point?

If you want to **** off over tabloid headlines on diesel fumes I suggest you do it elsewhere, there's loads of threads on the main board where many will high five you.

To be fair, he does own an RS. A 1979 RS2000

    Nice. Lovely motor.

Look, I love a bit of debate and I know HF has been here on boards a long time and I know there is no point arguing with him. The clue is in his name lol. Cheap digs at anything non Ford are par for the course but to try that craic on in a 50+ page Golf thread, he was clearly going for a cheap shot and he knew it.

Maybe I should pop over to the Fiesta ST thread and say I think they're glorified 25k shopping baskets. But I won't cos I actually think they're a nice little motor.

Just as matter of intrest how many RS focus have been sold this year compared to Golf R in Ireland.

i have never seen an RS in the flesh yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭ondafly

sometimes a car's abilities at performance are not the be all and end all to the prospective owner. While I think the RS in that dull grey looks nice, and the performance is attractive, the complete package is not what I would want from a hot hatch.

I actually saw one last weekend on UK plates in the Phoenix Park - its different that's for sure !

Only one I've seen in the flesh was at the limerick classic motor show this year. The lyons dealership had that and the new mustang on display. Very "angry" looking car is my interpretation of it. Gorgeous alloys on it but i thought the interior looked very cluttered and fussy. Put it like this ,....if i had the spare cash i would still be heading to my vw dealer for a new"R". I love vw but generally would consider myself open minded to most cars of that genre. But the R is still the pinnacle for me. ...

I have to agree with this. I bought my lapiz blue R a couple of weeks ago after a long period of debating between it and a GTI.

I get quite a few comments also. The blue colour probably helps. Delighted I went with the R in the end.

I met a silver golf R yesterday on the road(KK reg don't know if anyone on here?) and it looked brilliant to me but also anonymous to the majority. The chrome completely blended in and only the quad exhausts and pretorias stood out. Lapis blue on the other hand stands out to everyone especially when shiny and clean and makes a statement.

My R is debadged and I love the fact that it just looks like a Golf with nice wheels to most people.

Love following this thread, haven't owned a VAG car since 2007.

I'm fairly settled into my BMW ways at this stage but drove an R in Feb in McAllisters and thought it was a beast. GTIs still turn my head when I see the relative rarity that is a MK7 on the road. Can't knock the raw appeal of the RS but I think the sales figures alone suggest which of the two models the petrol headed hot hatch population are going for.

Maybe some day I'll go back!!

I remember drooling over your MK5 GTI's and that blue S3 back in the day Mark ;) You got rid of them too quickly!
