Saw the new Bourne film last night. There is a scene where an asset is driving a golf. I couldn't work out if it is an R or a GTI and its annoying me! I have been hunting for evidence. Anybody see this?

I'm going to see it tonight. I read someplace else that it's a GTI... I'll report back.:pac:

Is the film good? I'm hearing mixed reports

I have yet to find conclusive proof on what model it is. You might have a better eye than me. The scenes were a little too fast for me to get a clear view

Film is decent ok. Don't think its quite to the standard of the trilogy but its much of the same (I am totally discounting Legacy of course as I thought that was total garbage). Feel like they are running out of story lines somewhat. I got that sense. Particularly when I hear lines I recall from the the previous ones. But its enjoyable nonetheless.

I saw it, looked like a GTi to me

Yep, saw it tonight, definitely a MK6 GTI. It gets a good workout! Really enjoyed the movie too. Don't really understand the few negative reviews I've read tbh...

Finally after 11 weeks of waiting, I'll be collecting my GTD Saturday morning, can't wait now. Thanks to all on here who answered my questions, I could have more yet when I start messing with all the gadgets!

Saw 2 Golf R's over the last couple of days.

I've no doubt they are great cars, but I have to say I thought they looked a bit dull.

One man's dull is another man's understated and classy.

I suppose it depends on what you want, everyone wouldn't necessarily want a in your face car like a Focus RS, the R is more understated, which I personally prefer. Each to their own I suppose

I'm not in that market unfortunately but if I were I'd want performance, dynamics, usability, strong residuals, a bit of road presence and reliability.

I think the Focus RS wins that particular battle.

    I'll definently post pictures, thanks

But you'd be completely wrong. We get it, we know you have the blue oval blinkers firmly attached.

But hey, we all have our own opinions.

p.s. Any side by side test I've read concludes that the Focus RS beats the Golf R.

Really? I've seen loads. Some favour the Golf, some favour the Ford. There's always a strong bias towards Ford in the UK press too of course.

The Focus is undoubtedly quicker but it does have a few more horses so this is no surprise. Don't forget the RS is also about 10k more than an equivalent R, so in reality it's more in line price wise with an RS3. And it's typically Ford miserable in the standard equipment dept. Yes I also remember you don't care about standard equipment either :pac:

Could you link say 3 of them from a reputable reviewer?

There's less in it in pure drag strip performance than you'd think.

Golf R is actually more expensive than the Focus RS in the UK. Very odd. Difference here must be to do with VRT presumably.

Wha?? The R is no drag strip racer.

I was ridiculed in this thread a few weeks back for the mere mention that I'd still take an "R" over an "RS". Not surprisingly it was Henry Ford III.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm of that age where I want my hot hatch to blend in.

Old age will come to us all eventually Senecio :D

Whilst as I've said earlier cars are a matter of personal taste I think it's fair to say that the RS is top of the heap in terms of dynamics etc. right now.

That AMG A Class Merc. is the quickest I think.

I think it's a given that the focus rs is faster point to point than the R and is a more exciting car to drive. However it is also a lot more extrovert in exterior appearance and the interior is more low rent.
The R is slower but more subtle.
I think they appeal to two different markets as a result. I would drive a golf R but would never consider an rs due to its looks and boy racer image.
In the uk where they are priced similarly they are more direct competitors than here where there is a big gap in list price and a bigger gap when you take the finance offers vw are offering into account.
Both excellent cars each with their own appeal but I don't agree one is better than the other

How often do you drive that Fiesta at anywhere close to its abilities? I'm guessing almost never - "top of the heap on dynamics" cliches are meaningless.
Henry, you're only in here pulling our collective chains ;)

Boy racers can't afford either car.

    They are direct competitors.

These are mega hatch performance cars - VW finance is a strawman argument.

Too many comparison tests suggest that there is a clear winner.

    lol. Never then.

I've driven the golf R not the RS but not sure if that's relevant to our discussion.
I've read enough reviews and seen tests online to appreciate the Ford is a brilliant drivers car. All I'm saying is I don't believe here in Ireland they are direct competitors for most buyers.
