For any guys going from gti to the R.
Has your insurance gone up much and do you have to get a tracker fitted?
I read in this months "car" magazine their long term car was robbed from the journalists house. Took the keys from the house.

My current (now previous!) insurer tried to rob me. They wanted €350 to change the car over. I cancelled and took out a new premium which is a cheaper premium than I paid on the GTI back in April. I'll be due a refund too on the cancellation so overall I'm up I think!

Insurance never changed for me. Last car was 10 years old, had 90bhp and was worth about 43 euro. I didn't ask too many questions :-)

The new RS isn't OTT with the styling, seems to look tamer than the last generation.

However, yes the new type r is not my bag at all. You would want to be a real Honda fan to go for one of those.

Only having driven it briefly yesterday and last night, I was struck by how much better the ride quality and quietness in the cabin were from the previous car. Damping and sound deadening really seems to have been improved over the last 2 years??? I was actually expecting this to be worse, given the original car was running standard 17" rubber, as opposed to the smaller rimed 18" on this one.

The media pro is also a big improvement over the version 1. It seems to apple car play and some sort of a Wi Fi thingy, but have not figured that out as yet...

The DSG took a bit of getting used to also, and that coupled with the DCC drive select, Iv only experienced the "Eco" setting (Normal, Sport and Individual also available).

Looking forward to sport and the flappy paddles at the weekend...

The younger son loves the car and said, "cant wait to get to school on Monday so the other lads can see this"... High praise indeed :):):)

Class car, great spec on it. Would have really liked the roof but it's an expensive option that I couldn't stand by. Really nice option though.

First thing to do though is set up a wifi hot spot on your mobile and connect the car to it.

When you get time to set up carnet you need this link. Register and you will need your chassis number. It generates a code then you enter into the car.

Joe, is that your car up in Spirit today?

Worth checking out the glossyness on their Facebook if you haven't seen it.

I've have sun roofs on most of my cars over the years, VW or other wise.

On the MK7's its great on a bright or sunny day, as it total changes the atmosphere of the car... Today for instance I would use the roof rather that the AC...

there is a button under the accelerator, so when you floor the car, press the pedal a little bit more and you will feel a button press under the accelerator, the car will change down a gear and accelerate harder :o

Yep that's it, seems to be doing a super job on it so far. There was a fair bit of noticeable swirl marks on it already so I expect Brian will sort it out!

It's in the manuals too. I think in the manual it just overrides the speed limiter - if you had it set.

    Looks great so far anyway.

I think the blue will be a tough one to mind. White was so easy really. Hopefully the coating Brian puts on it will make it fairly resilient. He did my GTI 2 years ago. Today it's sitting in the dealers showroom alongside brand new cars and it looks better than any of them!!

Does the R come with launch control?

    Yes if you have DSG.

For the dsg owners, you may already know this but no harm if not. If you are in D and decide to use the paddles for a small time, maybe to change down for an overtake when you want the car to go back into D you can hold the up shift paddle for a few seconds. That's why it says "off" on it.

Took me a few days to figure out. Find it useful now though.

Did any of the R drivers amongst us consider the Audi S3 at all when car shopping?
I was looking at the Audi website and it seems well specced at 52k for a 5 door s tronic is not much more than equivalent R. Would you recoup the difference I wonder at resale? Are there better deals on golfs?

Not a fan of the hatch looks, especially the Sportsback 5 door version. The saloon is cracking looking alright. I think the price differential when you spec them to roughly equivalent levels is much bigger than that - easily 8-10k between them like for like. Audi standard spec is miserable.

The R also gets far more favourable reviews. Some say the Audi has the nicer interior. I don't agree. I hate that pop up screen and over-minimalist look. Having owned an Audi years ago, swayed by perceived "quality" interior, that quality is literally wafer thin.

    Lovely car mister drak.
Looks like mine. I love the carbon grey. It looks brill when clean and the sun hits it( rare combination I know but best colour in a gti anyway)
Will be interested in how you find the dsg.

The tartan thing always looked absolutely rotten to me. Where does that come from? Is it simply because the game came from Scotland?
