Those wheels are the biz! they really are much prettier than the Cadiz alloy.
Do you have the new bigger standard nav screen in yours?
I think Western motors have your old car up on carzone already for 31k. Iy looks good too!

Lovely motor! Glad you didn't fit those silly 'German-style' plates that are all the rage at present. Well wear by the way :-)

I've a gtd- I had a gti- they are very dear to insure and tax. They also use a fortune of gas. Get the gtd much safer option!

Definitely no German plates. I'm past that phase! I will get standard pressed plates though, regular legal font. Don't like the plastic ones.

If your really worried about mpg then don't bother looking at a hot hatch to begin with.

Yes, I have the new generation "MIB 2" radio / nav. It's a massive improvement! See the attached pic.
Yes, they have my GTI up already! No time wasted there. Price is a bit strong IMO but for anyone in the market for one you won't find one better.

My MK7 GTI would do high 30's mpg all day long and over 40 on a run. I expect the R to be a little less frugal but I didn't buy this car to save pennies at the pump.

The optional 19s really make the Rs look so much better, best looking Golf in a long time although I still couldn't hand over 40k for one

sorry Joe - but I have a boring parenting question to ask :o

With the mk5 GTI I felt the boot was much larger than the Mk7 GTI until I realised the floor lowered :pac: which was grand to fit a buggy and bits and bobs for a week away. I read online though that the 4-motion diff makes the boot smaller on the R ? do you know if its at the highest boot floor level like the Mk7 GTI ? but the width etc is still the same ?

Exactly. The boot is exactly the same as the GTI when the floor is at the highest setting. Depth/width is the same. Directly under the floor is the spare wheel and the tools/jack are in foam inserts around the wheel. So there are little cubbies and spaces under the floor around the spare wheel for carrying small items. But unless I remove the spare, I can't lower the whole floor!

perfect cheers Joe - certainly no show stopper space wise.

As someone who doesn't care for the Mark 7 Golf, I have to say that I really like the look of the R. The subtle changes really make the car. Found myself pricing one. 52k is where I stopped.

Another golf owner here, 22 week wait until it came. 6 days and 900km in and so far so good. Great all rounder. Look forward to the commute now :-)

Another beauty. I'm jealous. Us gti owners are only in the hal'penny place!
I'm not sure which I prefer lapis blue or that black pearl?
Again the alloys make it a beaut.
    Well wear.
    Is it dsg or manual?

Clearly lapiz blue is the winner ;)

    Vintagevrs' car is also DSG.

Thought I'd stick up my GTD while we are all at it ;)
You can just make out the red calipers which came with the sport and sound package.

Fantastic on fuel but would love the R.. maybe next time.

Did anyone get the lifeguard protection? If so, do you know of any valeting company that would use the products while valeting?

Don't do it. Waste of money. And depending on who does it, car may look worse with buffer marks.
Bring it to a pro detailer such as Spirit Detailing. It's what I'm doing.

    Stunning car btw!

Yeah its a 5 door dsg. The gearbox is great. Fuel economy so far has been poor enough. On the first day the on board computer said 15mpg and it's usually slightly optimistic. Hoping to get mid 30s out of it, but it's early days yet. A spirited run down the country yesterday with motorway included was low 30s.

The adaptive cruise is a great feature, driving a car today with normal cruise and already missing the adaptive. Mad how soon you get used to things.

Auto dipping lights is also a feature I like. Reverse camera is a bit of a gimmick in a hatchback and I find it almost more confusing than helpful. Tend not to look at it anymore.

I find the seating positon to be slightly high, would have liked the seat to sink a little bit further but used to it now. Interior is a nice place to be during the day and at night its a nice cabin to open the door to with the blue strips in the sill and door cards.

Plenty of people are against fake engine/inducton noise which I think is in the gti and gtd as well. However I really like it. My view on this may change but at the minute I like the extra noise in race mode. I have to have the dsg in manual when in race mode though as it hangs on too long to each gear for normal driving. Quarter throttle and it still goes up to 5k rpm. This is fine if you are pushing it but that is not too often.

Lovely motor, what does the sport and sound package include? Are those the same brakes from the gti performance pack or red calipers on the original disks?

It's the same brakes (same as non-PP GTI) just calipers are painted red. I think the pack also includes the Driver Profile Select button.

I like the R in black, gives it an understated sleeper look.

Slightly off topic but VW seem to be shifting a fair amount of Golf GTi and R models here whereas the Focus ST or RS doesn't seem to have the same level of interest or demand here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

For any guys going from gti to the R.
Has your insurance gone up much and do you have to get a tracker fitted?
I read in this months "car" magazine their long term car was robbed from the journalists house. Took the keys from the house.

I'm not too well up on the latest ST / RS but I'd say the lairy looks (particularly the RS) would put an awful lot of people off, me included. Same applies to the latest Civic Type R.

VW are also marketing them especially well with great spec and a massive price cut on the R last year. I'd wager that if you went into a Ford / Honda dealer they'd know sweet FA about their performance offerings.
