    Joe A3,

Can you give me an idea of how big the fuel tank is in these cars (GTi)? (how much you put in on a weekly basis) I'm currently looking at a Mark 7 and want to get a handle on a few figures before I make any move to buy one.

I only bought my current car 9 months ago and I'm not doing the mileage to justify a diesel but am I mad to move so quickly.

The tank in the GTI is 50 litres. I think it's 55 in the R. I was filling the GTI once a fortnight if even that, but that's like "how long is a piece of string". Everyone's mileage and usage is different! I averaged 34-35mpg in the GTI with a mix of short commutes and city driving. I'd get a bit more, high 30's on a motorway run.

What year / spec are you after? Used? 3 door or 5 door? DSG or manual? My "old" one is sitting in the dealers showroom in Galway, it's easily the best 2 year old example available today IMO.

I think its a 50 liter tank - and I get roughly 550 to 600kms from a tank, but I only fill up every 4 weeks or so.

What's this App you speak of - and is it just for the R people or available for the GTD/i? :D

Your car is pre week 22 isn't it? The post BW22 cars have the newest head units (MIB 2). Included as standard is "car-net" which gives you a bunch of online services like news/weather/traffic and you can use the portal to upload destinations to the Nav.
App-connect then is the the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto which you need Pro-Nav for to get from the factory (I'm hopeful that this can be activated on mine by the dealers later on)

Its 141 manual 5door, good spec. My daily commute total is 30km (All N roads and a small section of motorway to Carrigtwohill in Cork). Is it a white one with reversing camera etc.?

Yeah that's mine. They have it in the showroom as of today. If you didn't look at the plates you'd assume it's new.

My commute is similar. You'll be looking at filling up just once a fortnight, getting 600-630kms per tankful. Thereabouts!

Might be hard to find a 132-141 with "good" spec. My old 132 is an exception. The standard spec wasn't great until late last year when VW bumped up the specs in a big way (so late 142 / 151 onwards)

    Ron,

Have a scan back through this tread, as I posted up figs for both my Mk7 Gti and the Previous Mk6. I religiously take down all fills up on a phone App (Road Trip).

The My Mk7 was getting about 33mpg towards the end, although I only do short stop city driving and am "generous" with the right peddle.

    Thanks for the replies,

MisterDark I only just came across your data about 10min ago I saw the improvement over the Mk6. Which is a good improvement all things considered with a hot hatch. Well I'm nearly sold on it, just waiting to discuss figures with the dealer to see if they can tempt me away from the Passat.

Got my first experience of the high beam assist, last night on the old Dublin / Belfast road. Nice feature !

His is an R though! I'm finding the mpg in the R fairly poor too so far but it's far too early to judge as I'm doing so many little short "test drives" and giving it beans every so often that I wouldn't have done so much in the GTI. I did a run on the motorway last week though and got a respectable 34-35mpg on that trip.

The high beam assist is cool alright. I like too how the rear view mirror is different with it - more rounded edges.

It looks like I lost out on my GTI:(. Someone else obviously had a better offer to make than I did. Anyway the search still continues. But I'm giving my self more time to look (want a 5door) and maybe an R might come available in the meantime. Well my Passat stays with me for another while anyway.

Anyway thanks for the help. Much better informed as to what to expect with these cars. :)

    Mister drak
How is the dsg suiting you?
My slight regret is not having it .
The manual is great and the shift a real pleasure but there are times I feel the dsg would be smoother and linear.
Re. The mpg I'm averaging 36 I think but for what the car can do as an all rounder for its price that's great.
I also feel(hope) that these cars will be low depreciators so overall cost of ownership is low enough.

I had a string of manuals before this DSG R and I'm really loving the DSG so far. Huge novelty factor with it, really adds to the occasion when driving! It's very very smooth. I've played with the paddles a good bit too but to be honest I often just let the car do the work and leave it in full auto mode.
It works very well with the adaptive cruise too. I can't imagine the adaptive cruise working as well with a manual box.

    Yeah
I love the adaptive cruise too
It is great on the motorway but if the gearbox was auto it must be at another level.

Yeah. I think the ACC is a slightly different more functional system with DSG. For example, in my car I could be sitting at the lights and switch on ACC. As soon as the lights go green / car in front moves off, my car moves off too, on it's own. I don't have to touch a pedal. Then when cars in front slow down / stop, my car follows suit. I drove home from work the other day and all I did was steer :D

15000 kms now on the R and avg mpg is up to 27.9.

    Happy enough with that.

Auto dip headlights area great idea but they were better in the 335 than the golf . also annoying is no blue light on dash to show whether you are on full or not, seems obvious i know but you will find yourself checking them.

Wonder would there be good deals on 151 R's with dsg at the end of the year if I traded my 151 gti?
This is a dangerous thread for spending money!

Yeah I'm hoping a some GTIs come available end of year/January. I'm really impressed with the R from what Joe A3 and MisterDark are discussing. But I think I'll dip my toe into the hot hatch world with the GTI and then see where I go.

There's bound to be a couple on the market but I'd say they'll be in demand!

Decent spec on this GTi with the performance pack but savage money:

1+ on that (except the R bit )...

Was using the triptronic (rather than the paddles) last night and the shifts are so smooth. But as you say I do then to leave it on full auto most of the time.

I still driving in Eco, mode on the DCC, so I might try a bit of sport on Sunday morning, and report back...

I haven't tried ECO at all. Sounds a bit too tree-hugging for my liking :D

It's cool if you use manual mode, the car will still downshift when necessary (you can just concentrate on the upshifting!)

ECO mode on a Golf R sounds a bit like having a waterproof teabag.

    :pac:
Bizzarely, when in ECO mode the DSG box coasts when you've your foot off the throttle. I don't like that at all.
There's also an "Individual" mode though where you can customize each parameter to your liking, e.g. "Sport" for gearbox, "Eco" for fake engine noise...

Yeah the F10 has similar settings, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Each setting adjusts the chassis dampeners and also the gearing ratios/rev range. Obviously it's better tuned on the R with more noticeable results than on a big heavy diesel saloon.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

Are the different driving modes standard on the R?
Do have to spec adaptive dampers to get them like in the gti?

Yes, the Driver Profile (MODE) button is now standard on the R. Don't need to spec the Adaptive chassis. I think I may have caused this too. Back in March when ordering the car I badgered VW about the Mode button, persuaded them to add it to my order even though it wasn't an official option. I was quoted around €150 for the factory option. By the time the car was built, we were past week 22 and they'd made it standard fit.

Yeah, the difference between modes is very noticeable, especially if you go from Normal to Race. The steering stiffens up, revs increase, the 4 exhausts open up...

It would be silly not to buy one! :pac:

Gave the car a rub with a damp tea towel earlier, and then the ran came out:(
