Seems mad to me some folks talking about buying a GTi and then worrying about how to get the best mpg out of it. Kind of defeats the purpose of a hot hatch. Just enjoy it or buy a diesel instead.

This is very true but when you're more than a bit bored of diesels there's precious few other options if you want something fresh. I need it to be an all rounder - good on the commute and fun at the weekends instead of the current situation where it's good on the commute but not touched for the weekend as I'm sick of looking at it:)

With a 50 litre tank, assume you can hit 40mpg. You are looking at approximately 440 miles per tank...which is almost 700km per tank....you might be able to squeeze a bit more, but not much. Do you want to be in a position where you have to fill the car more than once per week?

I'm filling about every three days at the moment but I don't let the FR go that low. Either way, since my last post things have changed significantly and we're moving so a GTI tank or similar would probably last two or three weeks:D

Here's the thing though...I think that you can do both bazz. I do a 500km weekly commute where I'm happy enough to plod along in the rat race to/from work in the GTI and achieve 40 + mpg.

Can't properly enjoy it on the motorway during commuting times anyway.

When the mood takes me, the car is willing and able to put a smile on my face on a back road blast or wherever.. That's the beauty of the car, it can be all things to all men!

I hear ya lads but I'm just saying that a GTi should return respectable mpg on the daily mile munch unless you are absolutely ragging it all the time. I wouldn't be driving it like Miss Daisy though to achieve that though. :D

Out of my price range I'm afraid:( Ah sure it's only one option, by right I actually could do with an estate of some sorts so a GTI is a squeeze in terms of space.

May consider an R next time around...I imagine the 4wd comes in handy in the wet and to get the power down!

i really am enjoying it. cant remember the last time i smiled as much driving a car !
still the novelty factor everytime i get into it.
love the sound and look of it (lapiz).
i got no extras apart from DSG as i thought 45k is enough on a golf but very happy with the equipment levels.
The only things i would change is to upgrade the sound system and get keyless.
Really gets some attention from other "car " people which might be a good thing or a bad thing !

    Hi all.

Quick question, did any of the GTI, Golf R drivers ever have a look at Leon Cupra 280 before buying? That seems to be a beast and insane value when you look at the power and the standard spec for the price. The car reviewers seem to be unanimous, it will go toe to toe with the R around a track and if you're in the market for a hot hatch, this has to be on your list to consider.

Is it the image thing people worry about especially with the re-sale value?

Getting a resonance sound at the front of the dash where it meets the windscreen, when I select Sport mode from the DCC and give it the beans, any ideas anyone ?

Is there a sound actuator misbehaving in there somewhere ?

The only thing with the Leon is you will be absolutely crucified come trade in time...I have been on a diesel one lately. The Cupra will be a bit of a bargain in a few years.

With the FR I had the volume set to zero. It''s across all the forums with MQB cars that have them. They rattle after a while. Also worth checking the front of the headliner too, to the left and right of the mirror assembly, as some cars I tried had a rattle there that seemed like it was from the dash.

I had a buzzing noise from mine too at certain revs. It sounded like it was coming from behind the dash but I lifted the bonnet and I noticed that one of the metal clips securing the plastic scuttle panel (under the wipers) had worked itself a bit loose. So I pushed that clip back into place and gave everything a good main-dealer-style thump and I've never heard the buzzing since!

There was a Leon Cupra in the showroom when I ordered my GTI and I sat in and discussed it with the sales guy who reckoned the Cupra was a brilliant drive. He didn't care if I bought either a Seat or a VW but he said that if I come back to trade in he would much rather be taking back the GTI not the Cupra and offering me a lot more for the golf.
Also the interior is just that little bit cheaper feeling than the golf and considering that's what you are looking at day to day I felt the golf was a better car for me.
I've no doubt that the Cupra is a blast but when can you really exploit this over the GTI? There is a good video on Autocar racing the Golf R against the Cupra and I think the Seat was just as quick.

Im been mailing the dealer for last few weeks in relation to a firm delivery date for my Gti. I ordered the car on April 18th and was promised delivery on 2nd week July. I've been getting the run around / almost nothing from them since, so I dropped in to the showrooms yesterday afternoon.

Turns out the guy I'm dealing with has been off on holidays for weeks at this stage (no out of office message), and the guy I normally deal with has left the dealers.

The stand-in has no idea about my delivery date / build date, so he followed up with "the head of sales", pretty much same story there, No Idea.
If I hadn't paid a big deposit I would have pulled out there and then...

Anyway vent over... But pretty pi**ed...

Welcome to my world. Have you the "comm" number for your order? This is the order number in VW's system. If you have that, you could try calling VW Customer Service and quote them that number and they'll be able to tell you what build week (whether confirmed or estimated) that your car is on. It should not take the "head of sales" more than 5 minutes to check this for you either!! Your car is on their system, assuming it was actually ordered...

Any news from vwcs MrD? You shouldn't even need your comm number for them to give you order details. I called them with my name address phone number etc and they found the order no problem. Iv been close to cancelling a number of times too, all because of poor customer service from vw. Problem is I like the car....

I would be ringing/hounding head of sales about this if i was you to be honest. Once he/she has your name they can find a comm number and find out from the order system where your car is - totally unacceptable behaviour from him/her tbh.
On a side note i noticed a lot of sales people do this, leave no out of office indication when they are away. Mainly because i think they think other sales people will rob their customers/deals.

Not much really, and nothing concrete unfortunately.

From the garage stand in 2 weeks ago "We should have your car in the garage by the second week in August"..... "Hopefully".....

Cause for concern on my part ?????

I have been away on holidays, so not following up as much as I should have been.

This is the best advice you can be given Mr Drak. Get your comm number and contact VW customer service. They will tell you what build week your car is in. From there just add 3 weeks (normally) until you have it. Youre taking it quite well for someone that was pretty p*ssed. I would be hounding them.

Hopefully is pretty vague! Although i have seen cars sitting in Emden for 5 weeks for no reason. The car loaders over there are pretty unpredictable.

In fairness, your current approach is probably best, as all the phonecalls wont make one bit of difference to when it arrives. It will arrive when it arrives. I havnt been so patient and end up just getting annoyed by the whole process and lack of information from VW. Still have not been told final price or spec changes for the cars after week22. I think I am looking at mid August now too, 5 months from order. Have you been told about any price change on yours? I believe all Golfs are getting a slight price increase (few hundred euro probably, but still not confirmed) and some small spec changes. I know it will have a better head unit but there are other small things that are still unconfirmed.

Ha ha, I'm sure you'll get that mood back!

I'd say if it's already built and port-bound, it'll land at the dealers well before end of July.

How long is it from arriving in the port in Emden to Ireland?
