He won't indicate to us, probably four the best too. Ultimately, it's up to him when he lets us know what driving machine he's decided on.

So you just need the part that's 2nd from the left in that diagram. I think it's pretty cheap, maybe 20 quid or so.

There's a few videos on youtube for taking the door mirror apart. The only part you really need to use a bit of extra care with is removing the glass, there's a knack to it, to avoid cracking the glass.

excellent thanks for that - I see there audi style ones available now too. will have a think :)

best of luck with the new car too !

Have to hand it to Michael Moore's, I'm loving the Pretorias and the AM/ FM radio really has me sold! You can't expect all car salesmen to be enthusiasts but there is some basic **** there, there's nothing worse than a copy and paste ad.

Doesn't most uploading software auto populate now once you put in the reg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

I know it used to on the likes of carzone etc, don't know if it still does.

It just screams that someone doesn't care, didn't even proof read the ad or think what impact the ad would have on other people.

Sure they might as well stick windscreen, electronic starter and power steering down as extras too. That Golf is loaded with high tech and any single item of it would sell the car ten fold over AM/ FM stereo. Radar cruise, voice control, android auto etc. Maybe I'm just being grumpy.

You're right, it's a 51k car, they should be making more effort.

Start of the year, trainee told to take pics and upload a rake of stock, takes the handiest way out or maybe is shown to do it this way by an older, lazy veteran salesman.

My wife is looking for a new Golf, she has a 6 year old highline at the moment which I will be looking to trade in or sell.

She does very little long driving, around 15K km per year so we will go petrol and must be an automatic. I've specced up the new Golf with 1.4TSI 150BHP version with R-line and 18" Sebring Alloys and it's coming in at just under 36K delivered.

This has me thinking though, it's a lot of money to spend on a new Golf. I've seen a 162 GTI for 33k yesterday but seems to be gone this morning and also a 172 GTI for 37k. There are also a few 162 Golf R for similar money which are very high specced as they are the run out model.

Thoughts? Would basically be my "driving" car as I've a 520D Touring at the moment and I'm missing the 328i that I had previously!

Think you're thinking along the right lines, going for an almost new gti or R. I would do that over a new 1.4 anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭Muppet Man

I would take a nearly new R all day long just for spec, performance and desirability.

Just remember with the R there's a hell of a lot more power (you need to be a responsible driver!) and even if driving very handy you'll do well to average 500k per tank fill.

But I would still take the R... Probably easier to resell too.

Not sure if you’re financing or not but the rate on a new car will be lowest, you may get a decent rate in a 172 but anything else will be higher so the monthly cost on a 1.4 even if similar price to the others could be more.

    Thanks man.
I have the sensor light. They just pushed it up so that the light wasn’t pointing down at them. So unfortunately it’s too easy for them to reach it and do that and/or just break it.
Electric gates aren’t feasible but I think a driveway post would work.
Also considering the likes of the Nest outdoor camera. Those things alert you when it detects motion in the driveway.

Was going to suggest this. Have it pointed at the car and it will alert you when there's movement there.

For her driving, the R is completely overkill to be honest but I would love it!!

She gets close to 1000km per tank from her 2.0TDI at the moment, the other cost that is not known yet is the insurance.

Are the R still a magnet for burglars?

I would be hesitant about an R if it was on street parking or the car was parked on a driveway in plain sight/access to passers by. If you live in the sticks less of an issue.

Insurance on performance golfs is relatively cheap, in thanks to their impact detection system on the front that will help prevent small knocks.

It would be parked in a driveway, would the GTI be much less desirable I wonder? Also I guess there is more of a selection of them to take also so perhaps less chance of getting nicked

    :pac:

You haven’t read the last 2 pages of this thread then.

I offloaded mine this week. Unless you’ve got very secure out of sight parking I’d think carefully.

I think spending 35k + on an eco box Golf is plain crazy too. I would definitely be looking at a relatively fresh GTI/D for that money if it was me.

I just read the last 100 posts or so, I frequent this thread often enough but missed the last few pages alright. Really sorry to hear that happened you, I used to be concerned enough when I had the 328i as it has comfort access so would have been easy enough to take with the new ways they are robbing cars now. I now put all my keys into a faraday sleave!!

From reading the pages it's actually really put me off buying an R or even the GTI to be honest, I have a NEST camera focused on my driveway for a while now and it is pretty good but all it will really do is just let me watch the feckers taking her away. My house is fully alarmed with window sensors and motion dectectors but like you I live in a housing estate which does have plenty of nice cars. There is a Maserati 3 doors down and closer to the entrance which they may take first but looks like a Golf R is prime choice for scumbags.

I agree I think 35k on a new 1.4TSI Golf is far too much, so not sure what I will do now. I would also consider a 1 series for her also, but I'm kinda looking for something that will help me get the petrol buzz back!!

Yeah I know, it’s hard to know what to do in these circumstances and believe me it’s all I’ve thought about all this past week! Sadly the Golf R - and cars of its ilk (GTI probably less so, GTD less again) are a #1 target. Likewise RS Audi’s. Very fast, will outrun anything the cops have here with ease, yet still look relatively discrete. Perfect getaway car. Perhaps a 3 door is less risky too. Not as easy to use a 3 door car for a “job”.

So I’ve had almost 24 hours in the R’s replacement now and I am feckin delighted with it! So far so good. The performance is actually quite good, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. The car looks great too imo.
It’s missing a couple of little conveniences that the Golf had but on the flip side it has some cool stuff that the Golf didn’t have. It’ll take a while to become accustomed to it but overall very happy so far.

How about the just released new polo gti?
I think it’s dsg auto only and the polo is getting good reviews I think.
Size wise seems very similar to the golf although I know there is a certain cachet and middle class understanding of a golf that the polo doesn’t have amongst non car people who might consider it a step down.
By the way how is the 5? Why are you missing the 3? I’m thinking of 5 next probably next year moving from my 330e.

Have you taken delivery of the new wheels yet joe?
You’ll have to put up some pics and review when you do.

The 5 is a really great car, but it just missed the power and buzz that my last one had, hence the reason I'm looking at getting herself a GTI!! Other than the engine the 5 is miles ahead of the 3 in every area. Adaptive LED headlights are just top class, the way the light up the road is something else. Also, I don't think I'd go for Oyster leather again, it's quite difficult to keep actually, transfers the colour from my work trousers very easily. No issues with jeans though but I'm not wearing them as often. On reflection I don't really need the touring but like having it, gives great access to the boot and very practical.

I see Frank Keane have a 540i xd advertised at the moment but no photos up yet.

Quick spray of leather cleaner and a damp cloth will sort out the Oyster leather again.

When you start adding stuff like wheels to a 1.4 DSG Highline you quickly close the gap with the GTI. When my Highline was delayed I was inquiring about stock models and they all were 1.4 with metallic, alloys, R-Line exterior and sunroof. On a 1.4 DSG that's €36k. At €40k a new GTI DSG isn't far off especially as it comes with LED lights which would be €2,300 on the Highline putting it at €38.6k like for like, it's a lot more car for just €2k more.

As a run about car I'm sure the 150hp is great. I love my 1.0 and find it pretty nifty, no issues with power or anything so I'm sure the extra power is fun to have. I came from a 1.6 110hp i30 diesel though, 0-60 in about 12.5 seconds but I know I wouldn't be able to spend around €36k on a Highline knowing the GTI is so close.

I traded in my 161 GTI in Colm Quinn Athlone last week. You should take a look. It's in excellent condition, they are looking for 30k. I'm sure you'd get it for a few K less :-)

What did you trade up to?

Went for a 320d, same as one in pic below. New addition to the family so needed something with the extra doors and boot space!

I'm quite fond of the 4 series, cracking looking cars. It's a bit different from the usual 1-3-5 series, which I'm not actually a fan of!
