Something like a B8.5 S4 avant from the UK would be very under the radar Joe if you were willing to go back afew years.

Fast Audi estates are targeted by these low lives just as much.

I can't blame you Joe for wanting to get out of the performance car game for a while, this kind of stuff is just not worth it.

What about the 2.0 petrol superb discreet car wouldn't attract attention and good power too.

No offence Joe but I'm not so sure I would have cancelled the car. I totally understand your reasoning but my god, life is too short. My father passed away last year at a young enough age after a long battle with cancer. I intend living my life to the fullest and wouldn't let any scumbag get in the way of my enjoyment of my life. I love my GTI and it gives me great pleasure to drive it every day, as I'm sure your R did for you. As I said, I understand your reasons though, it's a sad modern Ireland that we live in I'm afraid.

I understand where you're both coming from. I grew up with a love of cars. I've lost countless hours watching the likes of Top Gear and Gas Monkey Garage to Doug DeMuro, Mighty Car Mods and detailers like Ammo NYC. Having my ma bring me to JapFest back in the day to going to Cars & Coffee in my own car. Sometimes I have to stop for moment just to appreciate my Golf, from the simple yet sleek styling to the digital dash. It really is some car. Mine's just a 1 litre but I still enjoy flicking it into sport mode and having fun every now and then.

At the same time it's hard to not be brought back to reality. Between the high costs of fuel or insurance, sometimes it's hard to enjoy driving and owning a car in Ireland. Then you have to worry about some ****er parking next to you in a completely empty car park possible scratching or dinging the door.

Where I work is heaven for scum to joyride, despite being 5 minutes from a Garda station. Most weeks I'm on night shift I'll some fecker doing donuts at the junction beside our car park. Some days the they will race up and down the road where there's high volume traffic of trucks and it's not uncommon to see a car abandoned or burnt out. Some nights I've had to leave the transport hub and walk into the main office to where our car park is because I can see them parking up near out gate, which is a dead end, just to make sure they aren't having a nose in. It's a right pain in the arse when you're just trying to watch Netflix and eat lunch.

I think we often don't get to enjoy our cars. Between traffic, bad drivers and trying to conserve fuel.

So while I understand the purpose of saying feck it and living your life, there's also the stress of it all. Sometimes it's not worth it, sure this time they ran away but who knows what will happen next. At the end of the day you need to look after yourself, the wife, the kids etc. A car isn't worth that.

If you can't feel safe in your own home then what's the point. Nothing you do will deter these guys, at some point someone else will come along and get what they want and they won't get caught. If they are, a slap on the wrist is all they'll get. The least you can do is try minimise the risk.

Whatever you get next Joe I hope you have a big grin on your face when you pickup the keys, enjoy driving it and when you're home from work you turn your head to look back at it as you go into the house and hopefully you will still be up for giving it a proper wash every so often.

    Joe
Whatever you get next, make sure you don’t rush into something just to get rid of the golf. There are plenty of nice cars out there and part of the fun is picking out what you want.

Sorry to hear of this Joe. I have (had) my heart set on a newish GTI for the past while but after this thread I'm having serious doubts. They really are a magnet for scrotes and professional thieves. A guy down the road from me had a fishing attempt for his keys for his 10 year old GTI a while back. Another guy I know warned me off a new one, says it's almost guaranteed an attempt will be made on it (won't buy one himself, despite being a fan). I don't know if I could live with it constantly in the back of my mind. You can't have nice things in this country.

It's an awful pity that we can't have nice cars for fear of these scum. Sorry to hear that you have cancelled your order and are considering changing motors. They are a beautiful car.

    Quick update for those interested...

    - new R cancelled.
    - likely deal in place to sell current R back to VW

And I've sorta decided on a replacement ;) I'll fill ye in when / if it gets done.

Very sorry to hear your news Joe - I know exactly how you feel and I think you are making the right decision.

I've had a few 3 cars belong to me broken into over the years and no amount of security stops them if they really want it. Electric gates, CCTV footage, fingerprints etc, Gardai knowing the actual scum, knowing exactly where they live etc. Once any of my cars was tainted by scum I sold them on almost immediately.

My parents had their home ransacked 2 years ago in the middle of the day - loads of security. Scum just smashed the alarm boxes (2 of them) to stop them making noise. They took the spare car keys, even though there were no cars at the time. And for the next 5 nights (yes it takes Merc that long to change a lock), my dad sat up all night watching cars go by. Even videoed a transit crawling past the estate stopping at each house that had a Merc. Probably looking for the aul lads - but it was being stored in the cop shop. This was a boring diesel car, even had a C reg ;) - my point is they will take anything.

Anyway if you're ever up in Dublin, or I'm out west again, you are more than welcome to take my Gti for a rip

OMG... there are just no words to describe these individuals. It's really boiling my p1ss reading stories like that :mad:

I was kinda hoping (naively?) that a boring diesel saloon wouldn't be of interest to them. My rationale being, there's plenty of "boring" diesels all around the village but it's only this sucker here in the Golf that they keep coming to visit.

I think your right to get rid of it and if I was in your shoes I’d do the same. BMW’s are a big target to sell on overseas or strip or both so if I was in your shoes I’d go for something that looks super boring and let these lads focus their attention on the neighbours car.

Superb 280 has the same running gear as your Golf but get it in Style spec with 17in alloys and it looks like a 1.6 TDI

It’s a lovely idea but we all love our cars dearly. Is it going to lead to a miserable existence driving around in a car you intentially bought to be a boring example that blends in on 16” steel wheels.

I’m sure I don’t need to remind you but choose a replacement carefully. It wasn’t even as extreme as your case but I once went from a current model 5 series to the previous model with more kms and less spec and I was miserable in it. Sold it on within about 9/10 months. Obviously any car can be a target but I think the Golf R is just one of those cars. Get an A7 bi-turbo and you’ll get over things easily :)

Spotted an issue tonight. The led indicator on the drivers door mirror is very dull and triggering a warning on the dash to check the indicator.

Is there a bulb/led here that can be replaced ?

You’d have to replace the entire LED strip. I have an exploded diagram of the individual parts of the mirror assembly, I’ll see if I can dig it out.

It’s possibly cracked and has let in a bit of water?

It involves taking the mirror apart which is not too difficult a DIY job.

Any developments on the new car front Joe or are you still letting the dust settle and taking stock?

There is. R is gone :(
But happy that I parted with it on my own terms and for a price I’m happy with.

Hopefully picking up a replacement tomorrow. ;)

Thanks joe. I’ll have a proper look at the weekend. Water might be the problem. Car hasn’t moved really since Christmas.

Joe really sorry to hear about your recent event, i can be quiet intimidating I live on a open plan estate also, no garage and someone tried to steal the alloys on my A6 just before christmas, car was in my driveway at the time. they had actually removed the locking bolt on one of the wheels. Hope everything goes well with your new purchase.

So you just need the part that's 2nd from the left in that diagram. I think it's pretty cheap, maybe 20 quid or so.

There's a few videos on youtube for taking the door mirror apart. The only part you really need to use a bit of extra care with is removing the glass, there's a knack to it, to avoid cracking the glass.

Jeez lads, now I feel like Joey from Friends... I have the VW coffee mugs, keyrings, jackets, but no actual car lol.

I'll still hang on in here on a consultancy basis :pac:

This is a great thread and you hold it together Joe so you’re gonna have to stick around. ;)

Any hints on the new one? Gonna take a stab at 330e

Nah, not a million miles off but it's not petrol nor hybrid nor e-anything.

    It'll be a Gran car for a while ;)

TBH just in light of very recent events I'm a bit more cautious about posting too much details, not that I believe for a second that these individuals are reading boards.ie, but still... it's a bit raw yet.

Best of luck with the new car Joe (sorry to hear the troubles you had with the last).

We'll have to rename this thread to "The Mega Mk7 Golf GTI/GTD/R & JoeA3 thread". :p

I think if you pay a subscription to boards.ie you can change your user name. Maybe PM one of the mods here for more info. Either that or just close down your current user account and create a new one.
