I suppose you contacted Garda in case they might have info on the guys?
Worth informing them anyway I guess.
Get a tdi badge for next one?

Your last post made me think about security for when I own a house in the next few years. At the very least a post in the drive way, a good solid one and a light that's only accessible with a ladder so can't be moved.

Posts on a local Facebook group showed some scum pretending to do caroling at Christmas but were scoping the houses, someone posted a picture from their doorbell camera, good wide angle clear picture. I imagine there's probably one out there with infrared so possible night vision that would switch back to normal if the light came on?

Possibly CCTV but only if I could point it in places to get faces and a reg.

Luckily yourself and the car are ok. The alarm at my apartment doesn't work but parking is a free for all so nobody passing by knows the Golf is mine and there's an STI and new Q5 Quattro out there so I wouldn't be first on the list anyway...

I don't think Ireland has any affordable data Sims for a GPS tracker? Lots of lads use them in the UK on the push bikes and they cost them a just a few quid a month for the sim.

On a slight related note I've just put a Tile bluetooth "tracker" in my car. Now some people reckon it won't help with a stolen car but I think it has a good chance of being retrieved as it works on a community of users. It can't compare to a real gps tracker but worth considering.

Jaysus, sorry to hear about this latest incident Joe. These type of stories sicken me. I can imagine that you're quite shook up and on edge. Trying to get into the car is one thing but trying to break into the house, while the family sleeps, is another. Hanging would be too good for these absolute b@st@rds.
Definitely after the car I'd say and definitely worth saying it to the local Gardai as was said above.

Yep Gardaí were here 20 minutes after it happened lastnight. And I just had their CSI branch here dusting for prints. Of course, it’s all a waste of time.

I’m coming under pressure - both internally in my own mind and the family to just knock it on the head. If the new car wasn’t coming it would be far easier to make a decision on it.

Not that this is much help, but for security, a big lump of a dog is no1 for me. We have a number of security systems at the house, some that visitors would be unaware of.

The dog is the biggest deterrent though, and she will let anyone that came to the house in the middle of the night know that they're not welcome well before id be out of bed.

I feel your pain Joe. Unfortunately there will the type of scum that don't get put off by an alarm or drive post...they will just break it and make you give them the keys if the house, drive post etc. I've heard of people that had cars stolen unknowing to them despite gates, dogs, cctv etc. Those things will put off the chancers but not the 'professionals'.

    Yep :(
These guys were scared off pretty easily though. Trust me, the sight of me standing in my jocks looking out the bedroom is not the most intimidating sight. So they didn’t want any confrontation whatsoever it seems. I’m still a bit stumped that they chanced it despite the obvious presence of an alarm, especially considering they ran off so easily. They must have just taken a chance - alarm might not be set.

Burglars do not want confrontation. Make it as hard as possible for them and make sure that its visibly hard. They will pick an easier target.

Aggravated burglaries for specific items are very rare.

I think there are 2 different types of scumbags.

One are the chancers - those that would be put off by the usual deterrents as set out above.

The others are those that are taking your car regardless of what you have.

All you can do is take those steps you can and hope they are enough.

At least they startled easily... Which would make me think they are unlikely to come back.

Hi Joe - sorry to hear.

My brother has a GTI and the PVC from a window on the side of the house was also removed. They since got these little metal bolts that stop the possibility of the glass being removed which might help.

I’m in the process of getting some Hik Vision CCTV installed in my own home and you wouldn’t need anything like €1,000 to do it. You can buy the cameras and other bits for €200-300 and then whatever you can get an electrician or Alarm installer to put them in for you.

I got a similar CCTV system installed in the house after Joes first incident. €180 from Amazon, 4 HD cameras, with HD recording. I also lock up the car with a big stupid bike lock on a regular basis. I fix the lock through the steering wheel and around the drivers door.

F***ing shame that life is like this now ...

Thats terrible Joe... I'd say CCTV is the only practical option left to be honest. Not that expensive and easy enough to install.

I’ve cancelled the new car and exploring my options for alternatives now. It won’t be VW and it won’t be “performance”. That’s life, but just not prepared to have another weekend like the one just gone any time soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,539 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Sorry to hear that man but totally understand the thinking behind it.

What about something mundane like a Skoda saloon.. :o

That's a pity Joe but if you're going new again I think any car is still going to be as much of a target.
While the R was a performance car and a target in that sense, any high value car is going to be a target purely for that reason alone.

What happens if you put a new diesel BMW or Audi on the driveway and the scrotes come back? You've gained nothing, actually lost out imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,548 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I’ve considsred that possibly Neil yeah. But plenty of my neighbours have nice enough metal and I am the only one that’s had hassle. My next door neighbour has a 172 C class. Lovely looking thing. Another merc across the road. A couple of 520d’s. A brand new Skoda superb. I’m the only one drawing these Kunts into the village and I actually kinda feel bad for the neighbours too. I’m sure they aren’t blessing me today. That idiot boy racer next door ;)

It’s the fast Golf these shi1ts want. Not a diesel saloon.

Unfortunately these cars are a magnet especially to be used in crimes as they are a fast getaway.

VAG cars in general are also very popular with scumbags and knackers. I live in a quiet village and had a Passat CC. Scum tried to disassemble the front bumper to get at a front fog light that only cost €45. I'd say if I still had that car they would have tried to take the alloy wheels as a regular Passat and A4 in my estate had their alloy wheels lifted a few years back. I'm on my third BMW (granted they are diesel) but they don't seem to interest the eye of scum or knackers like VAG cars generally do.

I thought about getting a GTi but my driveway is open plan and it has always been burning in the back of my mind about how much it would be a beacon for those who would want it for parts or to use in some criminal activity and the lengths they would go to take it. Would just be too many sleepless nights for me. Wish I had bought a house with a garage.

It sucks that you’ve had to cancel the car Joe but at the end of the day you need to make the call that works best for all in the house. Genuinely gutted for you, but I think it’s a wise move.

    CCTV is no good,
    they were wearing masks.

Sorry to hear you’re canceling the new R but kinda had a feeling you might. I didn’t want to ask if this was a possibility yesterday. Amongst the reasons I traded my gti was the unwanted attention it got from some people. Even got a phone call from a Garda to say people were giving it the once over in car park across from my work. These cars just seem to be a magnet for certain elements.
Anyway you can start a new thread and we will help you buy something suitable...
I believe Toyota have a range of cars nobody will want to steal😉

I was a while in a BMW dealers today. We’ll see how that pans out numbers wise but there’s a car there I would be happy to swap in to. I won’t derail this thread with any more of my woes!!

There's no community of users though. A friend of mine tried two different versions and they were both useless. Great idea in principle though.
You can get a decent gps tracker at reasonable prices these days.

    CCTV is no good,
    they were wearing masks.

Plus I did actually see them! Well one of them I saw quite clearly. That’s an image in my head that will take some time to go away. I’m glad my wife did not look out the window. One saving grace. So I’m not sure CCTV would have helped. One feature of some of those systems that does interest me is they can alert you if someone is on the driveway. The Nest cams can do that but my problem again is, living in an estate. Very open plan. I’d end up getting lots of false alerts. And these scum know all about how to get around these things. They messed with my security light, pushed it up so no light was shining down! So it seems they’re well able to get around whatever’s put in front of them.

I want to really thank all you guys for the messages of support and all the security ideas that you’ve posted and all that stuff... and I’ve had some kind PM’s from here and elsewhere too.

There’s really a lot of good guys out there. It’s just unfortunate that a minority of scum make life so difficult for some of us unlucky enough to cross their path.

I’ve had a string of performance Golfs. Loved every one of them but the R was probably a step a little too far in reflection. I’ve rarely allowed myself enjoy it as much as I should have and the last few days have put the tin hat on it.

I hope I will get back into a performance hatch again sometime but it’s highly likely I’ll be taking a break from them for a little while.

Its awful that you had to cancel your order on account of these thugs!

I had a car robbed from my house whilst I was away on holidays back in 2014 ( I live in leafy South Dublin).......they tried to break in through the rear patio door and when that proved unsuccessful they managed to lift pane of glass from the back door and got in that way!
(I now have the glass in the rear door sealed in ...........it will be a problem if the glass units breaks down as I will then have to replace the whole door)

As a foot note the guards contacted me a year later to say my car had been located .......in Latvia and converted to left hand drive ( it was an Audi A4)

I have a GTD now and even with upgraded house security lights and house alarm I am concerned about it.

No offence Joe but I'm not so sure I would have cancelled the car. I totally understand your reasoning but my god, life is too short. My father passed away last year at a young enough age after a long battle with cancer. I intend living my life to the fullest and wouldn't let any scumbag get in the way of my enjoyment of my life. I love my GTI and it gives me great pleasure to drive it every day, as I'm sure your R did for you. As I said, I understand your reasons though, it's a sad modern Ireland that we live in I'm afraid.

Something like a B8.5 S4 avant from the UK would be very under the radar Joe if you were willing to go back afew years.

I'm between one or a Leon Cupra 290 in a year or two before I retire the 2nd ST to a garage ornament (not worth selling after all the money I've put into it)
