Don’t want to further derail but the manual handbrake is a non issue with the auto as said before.
Best bit on the connected drive app is the ability to input navigation destinations including dropping a pin on an area and sending it to the car for later retrieval.
You do know Joe that after 3 years you have to pay subscription for the connected drive features which is a bit mean but typically Bmw. Apparently they are now charging yearly for apple car play too, the first manufacturer to do so.

Bazz, the new g30 5 series has the auto hold permanently enabled when you turn it on as well as the auto wipers which you also have to manually engage on f10.

VW give a lot of nice features on the gti/r that BMW will provide at a fee but not give you any return on them when you go to trade in.
I had my gti for 18 months and traded it in at a 7.5k loss on what I paid for it. I had free servicing too which was the icing on the cake.
My 3 series is 18 months old and dealer tells me it has lost 21k on list price based on what he would offer me.
    Some difference.

Yeah, some of the features I have expire after 3 years alright. If I have the car that long I'll pick/choose the ones I actually use. The "concierge service" is a very cool gimmick but if I use that more than a handful of times I will be very surprised!

I've heard that my old R has found a new home and also the new car I'd ordered has been taken on by someone else. Neither hung around too long, eh!

I'd say the VW dealer had a buyer lined up for your Golf R Joe before you cancelled the new one. That's probably why they were keen to buy it back off you.

They did. I'd put him onto it, he'd been PM'ing me about it on another forum I frequent. It's down in the Shannon area now anyway.

You can also use google maps on your laptop to send Eircode's to the car. The Connected Drive App doesn't do Eircodes, so if its an eircode you have, you can use regular google maps. But it has to be googlemaps.com for some reason (.ie doesn't work). Very handy.

    Jaysus,

Don't mean to rub salt in the wound but I was close to buying a 330e after the R, for probably all the reasons you pulled the trigger on yours, and glad I didn't now. Had BM offered me 2k more on the R I probably would have. Just shows, that running costs/tax are a minor factor when it comes to new cars (stating the obvious for most on here).

    Exactly.
I used to begrudge fueling the gti!

It was early 2016 when I traded and the arse has fallen out of values now so I’m sure I wouldn’t do as well trading a gti again but the fall would not be as bad as a beemer never the less. I got a shock when he told me what he would offer.
Joe did a lot better buying a one year old and I think that is the way to go in the future.

I think where you really get shafted is when you have something to trade. They give low ball trade-in values which suggests they just don't want trade-ins.

Buying a year old is fine if you have cash in the bank. If you need to borrow a lot of the money to buy it then the higher interest rates compared to pcp start to reduce the difference in price between that and a new one. (Applies to some models/manufacturers)

That’s true. The PCP rates offered on my car (171) was 6%. Goes up to 7% I think for a 2016 car. BMW are nowhere near VW on new car Apr rates though. Lowest you’ll get is 4.9 afaik, so the saving on finance for a new bmw versus a slightly used isnt that significant.

Off topic again but that car is stunning Joe, love the colour - well wear. Hope to see it at a few Ted runs or WARs this year :)

    good Morning guys
as the thread has gone slightly off topic not that I am complaining can I remention the Hyundai i30N which is now available here at €39,995. A couple of them up on carzone with a select number of dealers.

I do think Hyundai missed a trick by pricing it higher that the GTI although it is only the 275bhp model coming into Ireland.

    French pricing is €34,800
German pricing is €29,700 for the 250bhp and €32,200 for the 275bhp

    sorry for gate crashing

just to give an update the 275bhp model is avialble in spain with a €6,000 discount €31,900 instead off €37,900

It seems to be getting very favourable reviews. Apparently they poached some former BMW "M" engineers to help develop it. 40k+ for a fast Hyundai though... in this country where Hyundai dealers are only interested in selling soft roader Tuscons by the truckload...

It's got its work cut out to compete with prospective GTI (or any of the other VAG's and Focus ST) in terms of perceived image. They'd need to offer very competitive finance too and I don't think they do.

Depreciation will be steep as it doesn't have the pedigree of the GTi but would make a good second hand buy for someone in the market for something that isn't a GTi.

Agree - on Hyundai Uk late 2017 models are selling for £22K

Tbh I'm not remotely interested in the Hyundai. Just doesn't have the iconic draw of the GTI. If I had to leave the GTI aside in the morning, I'd be more inclined to do what Joe did, and go down the more luxurious BMW/Audi route (and I'd prefer the R ahead of them even!!). But each to their own..... I'm sure there are petrol heads out there who might like the fact that the Hyundai hot hatch is not something you see everywhere, and they might be drawn to that.

I think the type of person who is happy to spend 50k on a Golf will not really be as eager to hand over big money for a Hyundai, fast one or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Speaking of the Hyundai, I watched this last night, thought it was good....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,789 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Regardless of how good a car it is and it has gotten good reviews, the only way it will sell here is with big discount and cheap finance. Even then I’m guessing most of them will eventually be registered by dealers and sold off ex demo.
Hyundai are just not perceived in the market as anymore than a car to go cheaply from A to B. Your gti/R driver is going to be a car snob to some degree otherwise they’d have a regular golf.
Tell your non car person you drive a golf gti they know it’s a performance car. Tell Them you have a Hyundai i30n and you still have a lot of explaining to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,914 ✭✭✭kooga

I agree very hard to step out of a golf irrespective of the model and spec into another brand

But fair to play to Hyundai they had a go at a fast hatchback not many manufacturers do and it's been brought in to the country

And yes I agree it is over priced

Anyone know the story with loading maps from a different region to where the car is registered...on a Golf, not a BMW :P

I tried to load them on an SD using the file someone (Joe maybe) posted on here last year and it didn't work, so ordered off VW and they said that SD cards from different regions are not compatible in the same car. Seems strange.

Thieves must have worked as a F1 pitlane crew to hit all those cars at the same time quickly without being disturbed.

A friend of mine woke up on Christmas Eve 2015 to see his GTI on the driveway in a similar state. It had to have taken them a good 15-20 mins to remove the 4 wheels and his rear light clusters - smashing the rear screen in the process.

    Brazen fcuks.

One of the first things the dealer told me was to not keep the lug nut thing (can't recall actually name) in the car when leaving it parked. I can see why now :(
