ACC is fantastic on the motorway, particularly if you have DSG also.

Park assist is a bit gimmicky imo. The rear camera and standard sensors are more than enough.

No obsession but ACC personally is very useful and while park assist isn't necessary it's a handy feature to have as I frequent some tight multi storey spaces. It also adds an extra set of sensors on the front and rear bumper. Plus the novelty pays for it really :)

At the same time I'd be happy with 18" wheels, I know some would want 19". I would miss alcantara though...

Is the resale value on the Octavia not going down though?

Not sure really, i've ordered a petrol version so there isn't a lot out there to compare it with, very few petrol versions are sold in Ireland but that will probably change over the next few years.

Another one here who is a big fan of ACC. Handy, safe and makes the drive very comfortable

    Thanks for that link!

I too live in an area with a lot of a speed bumps and likewise have noticed my suspension creaks whenever I drive over them.

Just messing around with the VW configurator...

Anyone know what advantages the navigation Discover Pro offers over Discover Media in the GTI/R 7.5?

The configurator mentions 8 speakers, voice control and app connect. Does app connnect come activated with the pro nav or does it require activation by the dealer for a fee? Also, can you display the map on the digital dash with the regular nav or do you need the pro version for this? Trying to figure out if it is worth the premium over the standard nav in the current technology pack.

Anyone have or had DCC and would you spec it again? Never had it and not sure I'd use it day to day after the novelty of playing around with it wears off.

Hey, long time no talk ;)

Your first mistake was looking at the configurator. It's useless.

The advantages of the Pro are much less than they used to be I think, now that the standard nav screen is now the same size as the old Pro. I always felt the biggest advantage of the Pro was the larger screen which does look great in the dash but now the standard screen is a decent size.
The Pro now gives you a slightly larger screen and you lose the physical knobs. It has gesture control (most reviews suggest its gimmicky / hard to use), a built in hard drive (hardly necessary these days with music streaming) and you can display the Nav maps on both the radio screen and the digital dash at the same time - the standard Nav will only allow you display the map in one place or the other. Oh yeah it also has voice control. The number of speakers is no different and both systems now come with App Connect already activated. With App Connect you can use Siri or whatever the Android equivalent is - so that's effectively voice control there anyway if thats your thing.

If you're into your tunes I'd suggest Dynaudio might be a more worthwhile option to tick rather than the pro nav.

I don't have DCC in the current car but I have spec'd it for the new one. I don't find the ride particularly harsh in the current car so I didn't consider it a crucial option to tick, but occasionally it might be nice to select "Comfort" and ease out the bumps a bit. Most people who spec it seem to rate it very highly.

Cheers Joe, great gen there. Good to know app connect is activated no matter which version you go for now.

Will be very interested to hear how you find DCC in the new car. Hope all is well out West!

So what are you looking at spec’ing? GTI or R? Or are you just teasing yourself ;)

I'm just looking around at the moment and have been taking a serious look at the R, it's not a huge jump in money from a new GTI-P which I currently have (and still love).

Not sure how popular my opinion on the navigation is but I actually prefer it on the infotainment screen and the arrows in the digital dash, rather than the map on the digital dash. The size and placement of the Discover Media is great for glancing at and the screen has pretty good sunlight legibility. Then again, I use Android Auto as Google Maps is great.

The VW navigation voice is quite slow and robotic but it's worked fine when I used it. Voice controls don't seem to work great, tried a few times to no avail, could just be me though :)

While the 8" has touch sensitive buttons, it's better than no buttons. In my opinion. You have steering wheel controls so the physical knob isn't necessary for the volume but I do like using it to scroll up and down my Spotify playlists rather than swiping a long list and of course holding the power button to reboot when it froze on me the other day :P

I'm pretty keen on the tunes and I have to say the stock sound system is pretty decent. I think that lends itself to having 8 speakers though so there's good bass/mids in the door and the tweeters on the a-pillar so nothing is really lacking in the range. With the volume cranked there isn't much in the way of distortion and adding a touch of bass on the fader adds a nice punch to the bass. Of course the Golf is built solid so nothing rattles no matter how loud.

I think Dynaudio adds a subwoofer in the spare wheel? Not sure how useful that would be to the balance of the bass?

Low frequency sounds don't have a noticeable source hence being able to hide subwoofers in the boot and so on.
I have dynaudio in my car, I think it's great. Don't expect car shaking sub bass, it's not that kind of system. Sound quality is where it comes into its own.

Yeah the dynaudio sub sits into the spare wheel well. And as Neil said, a subwoofer can go anywhere - out of sight usually. For example in your living room if you had a 5.1 home cinema setup, most people - me included - put the sub behind the couch.

Lying awake here tonight as I woke up at 3:30am after hearing my side gate hit the gable of the house. Looked out the spare bedroom window and sure enough, a fella standing out on the street looking up at the house. I was still half dazed, first I thought it might be a neighbour but then I realised he was wearing a mask :( I banged on the glass and that rattled him. He ran and then I saw his 2 comrades run out after him from the side of the house. Then I saw a silver saloon possibly a Jetta or Passat speed away.
They were half way towards removing a pane of glass from a gable window :( They’d even messed with my sensor light, somehow reaching it and pointing it skyward. The house is alarmed and it was set. So it would have gone off if they’d got in.

    FFS :(

I did some of that stuff after the last time. Lights. House alarm. Didn’t stop them. I’m a sitting duck.

I would imagine you did - me too, but are there no further steps?
    CCTV?
Upgrading sensor lights to near floodlights?
A larger and more obvious alarm box? (Or don't they care the alarm might go off)
    Guard dog(s)?
    Electric gates?
It be inclined to buy bear traps but for the ****ing law...

Posts like this always make me paranoid. What area are you based in (rough idea if you don't want to post specifics)

Ah yeah there’s always more I could do I suppose. For one thing, a simple padlock on the side gates might have made it a little more awkward for them. No lock on that at all, just a latch. The sh1ts managed to reach up to my “Security” light and push it bsckwards so that the light was shining up and not down on them.
Maybe they hoped/assumed that the alarm was not armed. Many people never bother setting them especially when at home in bed. I mean it has a big box on the front of the house with a flashing red LED so they couldn’t have not seen it.

They removed the outer pvc frame around the window. Somehow they also managed to crack the glass. ****! If they had got past the glass the alarm would have triggered. The windows themselves don’t have sensors but there’s motion sensors all over the house.

OK. Just if you have a very nice car visible from the road it unfortunately attracts attention.

That's assuming they were after the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,028 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

I had changed out locks to a garrison type and they tried my utility door after opening the side gate. My alarm box wasn't flashing (bulb gone) so they thought it wasn't armed.
They forced the lock, alarm went off and they legged it. I woke to see them jogging down my driveway away from the house.

Since then I've replaced the alarm box so it flashes when alarmed and put a padlock on the side gates. I've also installed electric gates and large sensor lights just under the gutter, outside the bedroom windows.

I also have a steering lock on my car.

Next step - CCTV. Costs about 1000e and then there'll be a sign on the pillar at the side of the gate pointing out that it's there.

After that, there's nothing more I can do, short of sleeping in a rocking chair outside my door with a shotgun resting on my lap...

Galway. Out in the sticks in a sleepy village. Not what you’d call crime central, far from it.

Not exactly somewhere they would drive by and spot then... Somebody knows you have it. You had wing mirrors taken before right? Pain in the hole.

With the windows, you can have security tape (double sided tape) fitted... Makes it very difficult to remove glass even after getting the beading out.

Sorry to hear that Joe, it's an awful experience when something like that happens, absolute scum is the only word for them.

If you have a driveway, can you install electric gates? They don't have to be high, even low enough to almost step over but just as another deterrent against them trying to get your car. If that's not a runner even a removable post or two in your driveway that you could put in place each night. Anything to try to make it more difficult for them.

Sorry to hear about this incident Joe.
At least you and your family were not harmed physically. I hope you are not too shaken up.
I would second the idea of cameras, sensor lights and electric gates if possible.
We have had these installed and my alarm guy reckons it is physical barriers like gates or posts that are the best deterrent to thieves as it slows them down which is what they hate. They can wear hoods to outwit cameras and sensor lights can still go Unnoticed.
A post or gate stops them from getting away.
It’s a shame we cannot have decent cars in Ireland without having to put up with low life like this.

    Thanks man.
I have the sensor light. They just pushed it up so that the light wasn’t pointing down at them. So unfortunately it’s too easy for them to reach it and do that and/or just break it.
Electric gates aren’t feasible but I think a driveway post would work.
Also considering the likes of the Nest outdoor camera. Those things alert you when it detects motion in the driveway.
