Jesus. So it turns out one of the major secrets of the film has been revealed by the director himself 🤣🙄 Andy Muschietti, speaking to Esquire Middle-East of all things, blabbed the big spoiler that has turned the heads of those who saw the Advanced Screening.

The studio PR offensive: “The Flash is the best superhero movie we’ve ever seen”

The reviews: “This isn’t even the best superhero film of June 2023”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,735 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Reading between the lines of the reviews it sounds like it's 'fine', and a decently fun outting, without doing anything more than that.

    Not the greatest superhero movie?

It sounds like the film is a perfectly good effort without breaking new ground, which is in line with the early access reviews. If a critic is angry at a PR campaign saying "best film ever!!" they need to have a serious word with themselves.

Considering what a hot mess development of this has been, from production to its star's ... let's call it "mercurial" behaviour... it's amazing this has finally seen the light of day at all. This film started over a bunch of times before finally, actually, shooting; it seemed like a cursed film. If it's vaguely watchable and entertaining that should be success alone.

I'm delighted a Flash movie is out, even if it's clearly being suffocated by the nostalgia fog of Keaton's return (also insane this is only the 2nd appearance by Supergirl in movies). Barry Allen always seemed like a superhero who'd be a perfect fit for CGI driven blockbusters; powers arguably only possible now with advanced FX? On reflection Allen is a decent character with a good backstory and hook that's solid for a movie script. I'd certainly hope this is a launchpad to more appearances (played by Ezra Miller though?)

Ah I don't think any critic is angry about it, it's just very funny to me seeing the Warner Bros executives repeatedly pushing this hard as their DC masterpiece and then the critical consensus being 'it's OK'.

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

I'll preface this by saying it's rare I can stick a full film these days so it doesn't necessarily mean anything if I leave the cinema early.

But I did leave the cinema here after about an hour and a quarter. Ezra was good as "OG" Barry but once multiverse Barry is introduced it's too much. The latter is such an obnoxious character. For me it's a gamble that didn't work but I'll happily watch again when it's on VOD to have my opinion changed.

Just a suggestion, but maybe try a new hobbie. 😜

Yeah it’s bizarre to me to be interested enough in a film to see it on opening day (opening morning, even?) but then arbitrarily walk out after an hour! Watching a full film to give it a fair shot is hardly a major imposition on one’s time, especially when you’ve already taken the time to go to the cinema and paid for a ticket :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,520 ✭✭✭The White Wolf

No offence taken and probably true. :)

The genre just isn't doing it for me anymore and this was the last film I was hoping would be good, so I'd say I'll be done now.

I have a social anxiety disorder so getting to the cinema is an experience in itself. There are films I've seen lately that I've been able to watch in full, but my patience isn't what it used to be. If I'm not enjoying something after a decent period of time I'll leave as I have better things to be doing...and I did give this film a decent period of time, see what you think yourself being an on the level fellow and come back to me.

But yes I was looking forward to this film enough to see it on opening morning, hence the disappointment.

Ah that's fair enough, I don't mean at all to diminish any anxiety issues :) I apologise for that! I would always recommend committing to the full film if you can just to get the full picture and give it the fairest possible shot to make its case, but obviously, there may be individual circumstances that may override that from time to time.

Just watched it, it had some really good moments and potential. Also I didn’t know if any of the surprises so they were genuine surprises that I didn’t expect, so glad they weren’t spoiled for me.

There were moments I was actually starting to think “this really looks fun and it’s gonna be good” and it quite often just falls a bit flat.

I actually really liked super girl but I felt zod and Faora were wasted. I mean why bring back such deadly characters and underuse them like that?

Still better then some of the more recent stuff, better then BA and Shaz 2 and yue marvel ones even if that’s not hard.

As a superhero movie , I would give it maybe 6-10, possinlbly 7-10 cause I prob would watch it again.

Just out of the movie, best DC movie I've seen in a long time.

Funny in the right spots without being Marvel funny

Story moves along nicely and some really really fun surprises if you haven't read any spoilers

Ezra is an extremely talented actor, they carry the entire thing. Most charismatic, likeable DC character yet.

It's such a shame a movie of this quality didnt come out years ago when it should have.

It def would have made a positive impact on the DC universe

Just back. Saw it in the Cineworld IMAX. I thought it was done well enough.

The story was good, well wrapped, included jokes, solid action and some deep emotional parts. Also felt like a whole bunch of nods to fans of the flash origin stories, some expanded DC shouts, the old DC films and the DCEU films.

    Really liked this

Kara Zor-El Supergirl. Especially how they introduced her and powered her up.

Kara bonding with Barry for saving her too.

Young Barry and his different attitudes and behaviours making sense was handled well. They got across the different of having his mother.

Really felt for old Barry when he was taking back the tomato sauce.

The noticeable let down for the film had to be the use of a .. i dunno Sega Genesis maybe for the special effects for

the Multiverse. I thought they handled it well enough though. They kept that.. which felt like a big budget saving decision.. all wrapped up in it's own little area.

More money for the film might have sorted that.

There was one end credits scene. A bit.. like it was fine but didn't feel like it was leading to much.

I guess just to saw Jason Mamoa's Aquaman will be in Gunns films

I’m going to see THE FLASH this morning and so spoilers are fine as I won’t look for a response until tomorrow night.

In the various histories and reboots of DC comics has Nora being murdered and his father blamed always been Barry’s backstory?

Or did that come later as a result of a CRISIS reboot?

And who is/are the murderer/murderers in the various timelines?

Has Barry ever gone back in time who identify the killer without interfering or does he never time travel again after FLASHPOINT ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭Spon Farmer

Saw it this morning and loved it.

Funny and a lot of fun and a few heartbreaking moments. A pity that we probably won’t get anymore but I do hope that Gunn brings Barry into the DCU soon and that it is this kind of fun.

Keaton is great as always and Sasha Calle did great but wasn’t in it nearly enough.

Since Gunn is making Blue Beetle a part of his timeline I hope he brings her back too.

The action is great and VFX were very good except when Barry is in the SpeedForce looking at people in different moments of time and in the faces rescue scene at the start - they look like they from a video game.

It is very strange that they left the faces looking so unreal.

Does Keaton have much screen time in the film ?

Hes the only reason I would want to go and see it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,796 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Heard online that the director has said the CGI looks like that on purpose because it's supposed to be how Barry sees it due to the speed he's moving at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

There was a ropey CGI part of the movie that you could explain away.

But there were other parts when it felt more just poor CGI then intentional. The CGI of flash in BvS where superman goes rogue and is fighting the JL was far better then for example the opening scene of this with the babies so I don’t think they can explain it all away like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,796 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah I was kinda guessing the same, but haven't seen the film yet so can't fully comment. I saw spoiler clips of a certain part of the movie, and good god it looks horrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Saw it yesterday and it's grand that's about for me.

Sasha Calle was very good as Supergirl

Michael Keaton was fantastic as always just a pity Batgirl was canned and his scenes in Aquaman 2 have been axed.

Some nice cameos and easter eggs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,282 ✭✭✭Spon Farmer

I don’t know how to answer as to how much screen time - I thought it was a lot but you might not.

However he is fantastic and If he is the only reason, I would say it is worth it.

I find that hard to believe - why is the SpeedForce showing people like they in a video games? How does going fast cause that?

The baby just look like a doll. The dog looked real and the nurse looked real.
