Awful lack of Dream Theater in this thread. :pac:

I prefer prog, power, folk and symphonic metal (have a serious preference for clean vocals), but will listen to just about anything.
    +1000
Maiden & DT are probably my two favourite bands.

And seeing as prog has entered the fray, here's a bit of King Crimson: :)

Yes, but only only school metal, no time for anything post 95'ish.

Loved being a metal fan in the 80s. Seen Metallica a good few times, even twice in Dun Laoghaire of all places. And Justice For All tour. Seen Ozzy, Slayer, Anthrax out there also.Ozzy in McGonagles on Sth Anne St was the highlight of the lot though as the place was so small and it. Was about as close you could get to him playing in your front room.

Really miss headbanging sessions though. Hard to explain to anyone that didn't grow up in the 80s, but discos use to have a metal set, just like a slow set and when they would start, metalers would get on their knees in a little circle and start headbanging like we were possessed.

Lots of places still about that I remember frequenting as a teen back in the late 80s though. Soundcellar, Asha etc.

I remember begging my Dad to get satalite TV in the early 90s just to watch the Headbanger's Ball and then I began cramming E180 VHS tapes with as many vids off it as I could get.

Incidentally, I remember seeing a news report on MTV back then about a couple of Metallica fans, roughly the same age as me, who murdered three eight year old boys and dumped their bodies in a lake. I remember thinking 'Ah great, not like everyone doesn't hate metalers and rockers enough already'. What with all the hidden messages Ozzy and Alice Cooper were apparently putting on records instructing mass suicides and the like. Well anyway, I never thought of those lads again and then last week I seen a film in the flicks about them and turns out they were innocent and just got released a few years backw ith the help of Eddie Vedder. No idea how I managed to miss news of their fight for justice.

Eh, where was I. Oh yeah, metalers.. great bunch of lads.

Oh yes. From LSD-addled "In the forests of the Goblin-King" '70s stuff from the likes of Uriah Heep and Deep Purple, through the cheese of the '80s Big-Hair period, and on to thrash metal - Megadeth, Anthrax, Metallica - I love the stuff. I particularly like a blast of Barbarian Rock from Manowar or GWAR! Rock on, daddy-o.

I'll just leave these here - turn it up!

I'd say most metalheads also listen to some other genres, and many aren't afraid of a bit of pop either ;)

Listening to World Order a lot myself lately

I'm curious, how many of the AH regular crowd like a bit of metal? And what styles/bands do you prefer? If you're listening to metal right now, what is it?

Love my metal. Power, Symphonic, Gothic mostly. Some speed & thrash on occasion.

Fav bands include: Nightwish, Within Temptation, Rhapsody of Fire, Epica, Sirenia, Evanescence.

Finding new bands every day that are decent.

Can't beat a bit of pirate metal either

Am I the only one who can't stand this band? Yarr har harr I have a peg leg, and wenches and I drink beer! It's funny for about 5 seconds, and every song sounds exactly the same. The sound of them just irritates me, like i'm stuck listening to some crap childrens television show.

Running Wild are proper pirate metal :p

Big fan of most kinds of metal - started on Maiden, went more into the punk end of metal (Suicidal Tendencies, DRI, Charles Bronson), then branched into death, doom and black (a little bit, black metal wouldn't be my favourite still. But there's a great black/death band from Dublin called Zom if you want to check them out, one of the bestbands in Ireland). Doom metal, especially stoner doom, is one I think anyone could see the merit in, it's mostly slow, insanely heavy blues riffs (and usually Sabbath inspired, who are another of my favourites of course):

    Death
    Carcass
    Acid Reign
    Xentrix
    Gang Green

But thats a savage collection of gigs right there. Serious scene back then when you think about it.
