I'm curious, how many of the AH regular crowd like a bit of metal? And what styles/bands do you prefer? If you're listening to metal right now, what is it?

Are you a metal fan? 344 votes

Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' is probably one of the best albums of the 20th Century regardless of genre.

Everyone likes a bit of metal.

Good idea OP, we need to compile a list of these devilworshippers.

Used to be a big fan, not so much anymore.

I like the old more musically-driven kind as opposed to the modern kind where there's a high emphasis placed on technique as opposed to what sounds good. Don't want to sound pretentious but as a guitar player I just don't find metal attractive, I just feel there's a lot more distortion/gain to hide behind compared to other genres.

I think a lot of modern metal acts could learn a lot from the "less is more" attitude, I just don't see the appeal in listening to some guy play 300 notes in 10 seconds as opposed to playing 3 or 4 that sound good.

Kinda depends on the band though doesn't it? there's many metal bands who aren't about speed at all

Can't stand it, too much noise and shouting without any real rhythm or beat or even lyrics you can understand.

Yeah, obviously it depends on the band, but I can only comment on what I've seen from metal bands and in my experience there's a much greater emphasis placed on speed than in other genres. Sometimes it adds to the attractiveness of a band but it usually takes away from it imo.

Well that's just plain not true, no rhythm or beat? Metal wouldn't work without rhythm or a beat, and a lot of metal has some fairly intricate rhythms. Can you seriously say there's no rhythm to this:

As for lyrics you can't understand... well, bad example, but you know what I mean ;)

    No, not at all.
The 4 I listen to most:
    Avenged Sevenfold
    Apocalyptica (cello heavy metal)
    Korplikaani (Finnish folk-metal)
    Children of Bodom

    Then the classics:
    Judas Priest
    Iron Maiden
    UFO
    Metallica
    Megadeth
Machine Head (dislike robb flynn though)

And I dabble in abit of j-metal: X-Japan and Versaille

But I can't stand the narrow mindedness of "the metal scene"

Although there are some metal songs I like, the majority of can't hold a candle to most classic rock in my opinion.

Same, they seem to have a particularly dislikable following. For example a few years ago my friend said he liked some poppy DJ fella and this gobshíte (who thought he was "metal") decided to kick him full force in the leg which he had only broken 9 months previous.

Not trying to say all metal fans are like that but there does seem to be a fair few idiots.

I'd say their live shows are magical.

Seriously, how the hell does does someone make that noise with their throat? Apart from when they're having a throat fisting abortion obviously. It can't be good for them.

Yeah you can't tar an entire following because of the actions of one or two of its members. If that was the case I'd probably consider the non-metal-following population of Ireland all sorts of horrible things based on some people calling me a 'smelly rocker' or a 'disgusting goth' a few years back.

There were quite a few like that unfortunately. In fairness we were only 15/16-ish at the time so it could have something to do with immaturity/self consciousness as opposed to him being a "pure brutal metal legend". :p

Also, just been listening to a bit of this.

Double thanks! I absolutely despise that kinda twaddle! Metal's a vast genre, there's loads of different styles, someone moans "It's not TRUE metal"? Gimmie a break. (and yeah, that kinda attitude deserves a rolleyes smiley!) Hey, I like a bit of melody, sometimes keyboards, clean singing. That doesn't make it any less metal.

I will say that in defense of the rock & metal forum here, it's relatively free of that kinda attitude, and the regular posters are pretty cool ;) I post all sorts of stuff and nobody says anything like the above.

    No, not at all.
Best gig of my life was Rammstein. I doubt I'll ever feel the raw energy of a band affect me like that ever again.
At the moment, I'm more into nu-metal (I know, I know.) but I've recently discovered A Perfect Circle so my metal buzz is winding down a bit as of late. Having said that, I have the odd King Diamond track on my playlist...
