Please don't strip off Charlotte. And don't be putting ideas in Duffy's head.
Ad break, Joe away to spank the monkey..

Singing in the Shower Final and Mooney isn't even in today. RTE Presenters take their jobs so seriously.

I am not effectet by this tax. I did hear the ads over the years and believed it to be a second home/ holiday home charge. Had I rented out my house and lived elsewhere during those years I would not have considered myself liable for this charge thought it seems I would have been. Easy mistake to make IMO, the penalties should be scrapped and only the arrears collected! Why should anyone be liable for the property tax and this tax too?

    What would stripping off achieve?

won't have to pay fines when the wearing clothes tax comes in?

It's very simple.. The council workers cant be paid for by regular taxation (and stamp duty) any more, so they are extorting their wages out of the rest of us... Same as the TV license pays for Joe.

Finding myself agreeing with Joe, WTF!!!! is going on. The fines are absolutely disgraceful, it is shocking stuff.

I don't get this notion that some people feel they have to disagree with everything discussed on Liveline.

No matter what the topic there are always a few who jump on here with their own personal tirade of outrage and use the callers as target practice for their own bilge.

The mere mention that one of the callers may be in receipt of some benefit, or had a medical card withdrawn brings a deluge of such self righteousness and indignation around here that it creates an image of people typing away furiously on their keyboards while foaming at the mouth in their own vitriolic pompousity.

You'd swear butter wouldn't melt in their smug gobs.

There are times when Liveline does serve a good purpose and this week is a perfect example. They have held the government to account and highlighted the genuine concerns of its citizens.

Something our opposition are supposed to be doing.

But then - It was our opposotion that got us into this shít in the first place.

With all due respect you are completely missing the point of this thread. I suggest you calm down a bit then take your high horsery waffle to a suitable forum on boards.

I often agree with callers/topics, but very very rarely with Joe as he always has his own agenda imo.

I'm very calm. It's those tripping over themselves to have a pop at the callers that need to chill a bit.

So. Come on then newbie, you tell me the point of this thread.

Newbie?... This isnt like the public service were post count = seniority.

The point of this thread is to light heartedly comment on the hysterical nature of live-line callers and the complete lack of objectivity from its host.

Taking the comments inside seriously is a mistake and clearly a subject like this is better suited to the accomadation forums or Irish economy.

ok the phone went kaput today so didnt get a chance to chime in as the show was happening but i have to say im lost as to WTF is the real problem with this issue.

maybe im wrong , so forgive me, but if im reading it right people owning second gaffs (or more) owe about 800 quid to the council for the NPPR charge.

tomorrow if ya havent paid it it shoots up to 4k or so, and if ya dont pay by monday it hits over 7k

    BUT.

if you dont bother your arse paying it AT ALL , and dont sell the gaff in less than 12yrs time, the WHOLE thing goes away

so forgive me for being stupid but whats the feking problem?

who in the name of god is stupid enough to take out loans to pay this off when theres no actual fallout from it?

seems to me the only people really buggered by it are those lads that want to flog gaffs that they just got out of negative equity. if i was that girl that swapped gaffs with her mother that was on yesterday i'd tell the council to go swing as the only prob she has is if the ma pops her clogs.

and in that case the sale of the property covers the debt.

man this one just had me lost at what irish people do sometimes.

True, but its always interesting to hear someone who is just in the door tell someone who has been around for a while whats what.
The point of this thread is to light heartedly comment on the hysterical nature of live-line callers and the complete lack of objectivity from its host.

Which adresses my point nicely. There is a time and a place for that. Not every caller is hysterical. There used to be a time on this thread when people knew the difference and knew where to draw the line. The comments were a lot wittier and it was a lot more fun around here then.

But gradually, over the last year or two, the wit and humour gave way to a daily dirge of repetitive comments about caller's personal circumstances, incomes (or lack of), disabilities etc. Every one of them seems to be fair game for abuse here no matter what their concern.

As for the host's lack of objectivity, I agree that balance isn't his strong point and I have mentioned Liveline's agenda driven stance many times in the past. But in fairness to Duffy, with regard to the ongoing topic this week, he has said on a number of occasions that various spokespersons from the NPPR people, county councils and minister Kelly have all been asked to contribute to the programme but they chose to decline.
Taking the comments inside seriously is a mistake and clearly a subject like this is better suited to the accomadation forums or Irish economy.

Its hard to take a lot of the comments here seriously. But its just as hard to find any genuinely witty, humerous or worthwhile ones anymore either.

This thread has changed a lot in recent years.

    Chill out you. :P

But of course they declined, and I hope they did so abruptly.

Official bodies always provide spokespersons (SP) for serious radio programmes and apparently NPPR was discussed with LGMA on Newstalk and the News at One. Liveline is not a serious news programme but a vehicle for whatever the populist rant de jour happens to be.

Official, and corporate, Ireland realised a long time ago that the purpose of getting a SP on the show was to enable Duffy to eviscerate them and to enable callers (note the plural) to pillory the unfortunate (SP) who usually was not allowed to get a word in edgeways, and the segment would end with Duffy metaphorically feasting on the blood of the SP

So now official Ireland confines its public discussions of its business to serious programming. (With the notable exception of the occasion when the head of the consumer agency committed professional suicide when making a inadvisable foray on to Liveline to portray herself as a hero of the people.)

Mind you, the show has achieved something - next year the NPPR will be collected by Revenue, the local authorities having proved themselves incapable of administering the issue in a uniform manner. Remember the Property Tax started off with the local authorities.

Even if he has, it would have been with our money.
