You know I remember the good old days when the Liveline thread was full of sarcastic, smart ar$e comments of 50 characters or less.. A bit like Twitter without the hash tags..

Thanks to Lapin for changing that.. :(

I don't get this notion that some people feel they have to disagree with everything discussed on Liveline.

No matter what the topic there are always a few who jump on here with their own personal tirade of outrage and use the callers as target practice for their own bilge.

The mere mention that one of the callers may be in receipt of some benefit, or had a medical card withdrawn brings a deluge of such self righteousness and indignation around here that it creates an image of people typing away furiously on their keyboards while foaming at the mouth in their own vitriolic pompousity.

You'd swear butter wouldn't melt in their smug gobs.

There are times when Liveline does serve a good purpose and this week is a perfect example. They have held the government to account and highlighted the genuine concerns of its citizens.

Something our opposition are supposed to be doing.

But then - It was our opposotion that got us into this shít in the first place.

I have been listening for the past two years and in my view it deteriorated into the worst form of tabloid radio. It exploits the emotions of vulnerable individuals mixed with smart-arse comments of Duffy for cheap 'entertainment'.
Yesterday we had a good example of this with an elderly man who happened to mention that he had cancer in the course of talking about the NPPR tax. Duffy immediately homed in on this and reduced the poor man to tears live on air. This is Duffy's 'modus operandi'. No matter what the subject matter, he subjects the callers to an intrusive inquisition of their personal lives whether it is relevant to the topic or not. He pokes and prods until he gets an emotional reaction. He seems to think that this is good radio

I don't think that the comments on this thread about some callers are unfair. There are clearly some chancers using the programme to try to get some advantage for themselves.

In a programme such as Liveline, the presenter should act as moderator and chair the discussion. Duffy flagrantly flouts this principle and openly takes sides depending on his own personal agenda. He encourages callers who agree with him and shouts down any who don't.

Duffy regards himself as an institution and acts accordingly.

Well as a senior poster on boards with a count over 15k its his duty to keep the new people in check.

    Or something ;)

Think of boards like the stonecutters.

So is it unFunny Friday today? Are we going to play torture ourselves and see how long we can actually listen for? We all give out about it but lets see if we can be brought to tears of laughter by Sly, the mad lad who laughs and coughs like he's about to expire at this own jokes, June Rodgers et al. Who's with me?

Moderator: It seems my lighthearted attempt at telling people to lay off one another didn't work so now let me put it like this: there is a site-wide rule against attacking other posters; attack the post, not the poster. This is incorporated in the forum charter.

The next person who flouts this rule will be banned for two weeks and you can be sure that the ban will start on a Sunday and not expire until two weeks' worth of Liveline have come and gone.

Please also note that calling someone else out on the basis of post-count or join-date is not allowed since it falls under the same rule. There is no order of seniority on this site when it comes to the value of an opinion.

    Lord Fauntleroy standing in
Joes down at fingal county council NPPR office filling out scores of hardship forms and also claiming ignorance of the tax as he was out of the country for half of the last four years and in cloud cuckoo- land for the other half.

True enough - there are still countries in Europe with dial-up only in some parts.
    Like here, for example.

But tell me this..the vast majority of people understood and paid this tax but the people that tried to pull a fast one when living abroad are some sort of special cases?
