It seems the usual suspects have derailed this thread because of their love of Britain.

The re writing of history still abounds I see. 'No blacks, no dogs no Irish' was not prevalent? I was living in England in the 60's and 70's and believe me that sentiment was very much in evidence. That racist element in some peoples thoughts impacted on myself and wider family.

    RIP Gerry.

It was derailed by the usual republicans hijacking the death of someone for propaganda purposes to be honest, which is a shame.

    But yes, indeed, RIP Gerry.

    Lol, that old chestnut.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-11815001

Britain was once a byword for prejudice against Irish workers with the notorious "No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish" signs posted on B&B doors. Later, IRA bombings intensified anti-Irish feelings.

But things eventually changed for us. There's so many over here with Irish roots and now that the conflict and hatreds are over (apart from fringe extremists) it's better.

Do you feel that your experiences trump those of others?

As for the accusations of victimhood, you can speak for yourself. It seems as if there can be no discussion of Northern Ireland or the wider Troubles without some myopic poster crashing in and claiming that the entire conflict was born out of a victim mentality. All nonsense.

Your vast generalisations about the Irish people betray you as being just as bad as those you try in vain to argue against.

I did not claim any such thing. Get over yourelf. Argue the facts. Why were there thousands of us Irish over there in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s? Because this kip could not support us.
The IRA bombed, killed and maimed in London, Birmingham, Warrington and elsewhere - innocent men, woman, children. Thats a fact.

Where is the evidence for all the No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs? Proven to be a myth.

no it isn't, we have grown up

You will, of course, tell us of your personal experiences of anti-Irish bigotry?

Anything specific? Anything I experienced or have read about (from unbiased resources) was pretty mild in comparison to what the IRA was wielding at the time?

Also, we Irish were pretty appalling to our own people at the time (witness the industrial schools, the rape of children by priests, the buried babies, the Magdelan laundries, Anne Lovett, the kneecappings of joy riders, the pillage and corruption of our politicians.....)

Really, we need to take responsilibity for ourselves, our behaviours, our history.

Always pointing the finger at the Brits. its all their fault....boo hoo

Myth my ass. It's hilarious the way that some people on this forum try and portray anti-Irish sentiment in the UK as some sort of complete fantasy when it's a perfectly natural consequence of years of imperialism and felon-setting.

Similarly the only people to blame for Gerry Conlon's incarceration are the corrupt police and administration who put him jail; the same people who extracted a load of bogus confessions via torture. The IRA said numerous times they were innocent and those who actually carried out the actions said that as well.

The reason they weren't released was because of a wide-scale cover up by a system steeped in racism and general corruption. Nobody else is to blame.

You do seem to have 'issues' and therefore I shall depart. I would advise professional help.

Being personally abusive to me really does not support your argument. :(

Seriously, there is no need to be nasty to me. I have a valid point, as do you.

One bunch of fascists, one old eejit, some stuff from the 12th century.

You missed out the end of that article where it says

1950s: "No Irish need apply" - lodging house notice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,252 ✭✭✭FTA69

Unfortunately there are some people in the UK who still have a negative view of Irish people; whether that be over the recent conflict or else a patronising view of us as thick eejits with silly accents. Similarly there is a clear difference between banter in a friendly context and someone throwing in sly digs based on your nationality or accent.

I know - there was a few such notices I'm sure. (Not the 'no blacks, no dogs, no Irish' myth though)

Numerous first hand accounts of them existing. They weren't universal but they weren't hugely uncommon either. It's far from a myth.

I read it. One woman recalling one notice from the 1950s and quoted on Irishcentral.com

    Not convincing

If you want to argue historical fact, I'm wondering why you're choosing this thread to do it?
