Gerry Conlon, the Belfast man who was wrongly jailed for an IRA bombing, has died.

Mr Conlan, who was 60, had been ill for some time.

He died this morning at his home off the Falls Road in west Belfast.

The Guildford Four - Gerry Conlon, Paul Hill, Carole Richardson and Paddy Armstrong - were jailed for life in 1975 for an IRA bombing campaign that killed five people and injured 65.

Gerry's father, Giuseppe, was jailed later that year. He had one lung, and emphysema and had just undergone chemotherapy. He died in prison five years later.

The Guildford Four were freed in 1989.

Finally, 16 years after their release, then British Prime Minister Tony Blair apologised for the miscarriage of justice.

    RIP

Very sad life story, his whole familys lives were devastated by the lies and deceit of the police.
Shamefully no one was ever convicted for the crime of jailing the guilford 4 or maguire 7.

And shamefully no one was ever rightly convicted for the Guildford bombing despite the admission by the IRA.

So sad he was such a nice guy & didn't seem bitter at all to me which is pretty amazing considering what happened to him & his father.

Seriously the people who prosecuted the Guildford four & Maguire seven must have been on cloud cuckoo land. "Evill Aunt Annie makes bombs in her bomb factory all day long with her children one of whom is a 13yr old kid" Unbelievably fu*ked up.

Yeh that's true - I think it's fair that they post a detailed analysis of their outlook rather than a one-liner that just looks like being inflammatory for the sake of it. I look forward to reading this analysis.

In a statement issued through his lawyer Gareth Peirce, Mr Conlon's family said: "He brought life, love, intelligence, wit and strength to our family through its darkest hours.
"He helped us to survive what we were not meant to survive.
"We recognise that what he achieved by fighting for justice for us had a far, far greater importance - it forced the world's closed eyes to be opened to injustice; it forced unimaginable wickedness to be acknowledged; we believe it changed the course of history.
"We thank him for his life and we thank all his many friends for their love."

Until the IRA come out with the truth about these attacks there will always be doubts of their guilt or innocence to some.

    I know that sounds strange.
    IRA. And truth.

The British government agencies and armed forces have far more blood on their hands and will never be brought to justice.

    I know that sounds strange.
    British and justice.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever about Gerry Conlon's innocence.

What is strange is the number of times the IRA have been mentioned in this thread as Gerry Conlon was not a member of this organisation. Again there is no doubt whatsoever about this fact.

They're just saying there was no conviction of the actual perperators despite an admission by them.
true but lets not pretend that our own police force don,t ( at times ) stand back while innocent people are convicted of crimes
Who's pretending this? Just because the police force of another jurisdiction is being criticised doesn't mean it's inherently being said therefore that the police here are totally fine.

They did come clean about it in 1976. Joe O'Connell admitted it was the first bombing his ASU carried out in England several times.

They have the blood on their hands of the 33 people murdered & over 300 maimed in the Dublin and Monaghan bombs that's for sure, which happened 40 years ago last month. And nobody was even questioned about it ffs! an absolute national & international disgrace.

And there is no absolute proof of that.
Same as Joe O'Connell's guilt of the Guildford murders.

The IRA were quite, no very happy, to let Gerry Conlon stew in jail.

There was no synchronized bomb attack ever carried out like this by Loyalists before & there never was since. The bombs were constructed so well that 100% of each bomb exploded upon detonation. So that tells us that either it was not the UVF or the UVF went from being amateurs to being the worlds leading bomb experts over night.

By your lazy replies I'm guessing you haven't looked at the facts of this war crime or you just don't want to know about it, same with Guildford.

What's wrong with you AH? The man is barely cold and you've turned an RIP thread into a political football. There is a whole forum for that bull****.

    RIP Gerry
