I'm honestly upset by that. Watched it this morning and have been walking around in silence for rest of the whole day. I know its only a show, but for f**ks sake, that ending. I honestly thought GR Martin wouldn't have done that. That was way more upsetting than Ned Stark losing his head, because Oberyn has had a decent amount of screen time, as many episodes as Ned but I am way more invested in Westeros now.

When he kept shouting "Elia Martell, Princess of Dorne, you raped her. You murdered her, you murdered her children" increasingly aggressively I could see he was loosing his cool and it would cost him the fight and his life. :(

I completely agree. The work I have been doing today has actually been pretty much stifled after that episode. Also I've sorta been conditioned into episode 9 been a general season climax but this really destroyed me. I wasn't upset, just drained.

It's not even 'the good guy gets killed' that gets to me, it's the way they die - so horrific and this one was by far the most horrific. I'm kinda pissed because if the Mountain suffered fatal wounds then his death will have being a much quieter one in comparison to Oberyn's. It basically feels like GRRM is really just like 'I'll kill off some bad guys, but I'll fatally torture the good guys'

Something I was wondering - after Ramsey said to Theon they'd be going to a new home, and he was told he would be known as a Bolton now, was that Winterfell they were riding towards? I thought it looked similar in surroundings but it's a while since we've seen it.

I didn't take note of the surroundings tbh but did it show the castle? I'm sure it would have been burned in some way if it was winterfell. (It got burned down right)

I'm not too surprised. There was no way that Tyrion was going to win another trial by combat like that and all the showboating and everything made it even more obvious. Fairly gruesome death all the same, but Oberyn was pretty much the architect of his own demise. He had the beating of him and if he had just finished him off when he had the chance, that would have been enough of a kick in the teeth for Tywin anyway and maybe he would have had a chance to get closer to Tywin afterwards. I don't think Tyrion will die yet though. Something has to happen that spares him. If both the Mountain and Oberyn are dead, is the trial by combat still valid? Is it just about who dies first?

Sansa is getting very good at playing the game. She has her eye on the north now and getting back to Winterfell. I reckon she's probably going to cause problems for Roose Bolton. Littlefinger is such a fcuking creep though. I don't really know what he's up to the young lad. Is he just planning on manipulating him to be the face of his whole operation like what the Lannisters are doing with Tommen?

I was thinking much the same when hypothesising with a mate about different scenarios. I think in the episode it was made pretty clear that Oberyn dead = Tyrion dead, regardless of the Mountain though.

Yeah, Tywin made the decision fairly swiftly after Oberyn was killed. It just looked like the Mountain was probably dead too. I just wonder if Tyrion would have grounds to challenge it. I don't imagine Tywin would listen anyway even if he did.

The horror I felt when Oberyn died!:eek: I LOVED HIM! He was so amazingly cool and hot! There are no hot guys left!:P Damn the way he killed him was so gruesome too! *Shudders* I really did believe he would win, Tyrion will get out of it somehow, there is just no way they are killing him off.

Littlefinger is really annoying me at this stage. I just hate his bad/confusing accent and the fact that he always has such a creepy/perverted facial expression. He just gives me goosebumps. The way he told Sansa in the last episode that she could have been his child and then tries it on with her is just too creepy!

Until I see it, I refuse to accept Tyrion is going to die.
He just can't die damn it He'll find a way out!

It doesn't matter whether the Mountain lives or dies. Oberyn died first so Tyrion's sentence is final.

Ah to f*ck that was a gruesome end. Great cinema as never seen anything or heard "shudder" the likes if that before.

    Great ep all round

Oberyn might still be alive. It was only a flesh wound!

Anyone else appreciate how Bronn was right on the money in his predictions about the Mountain? That he was a lot faster than he looks, that he could dance around him tire him out maybe enough to get him to drop his sword, but that one misstep and he was a dead man... and that was exactly how it went down. I'm still reeling a bit from that episode, I keep thinking how foolish Oberyn was. Not because he didn't finish off the Mountain when he had the chance, but that he could've cut his tendons and then monologued with impunity.

It's downright vexing how much this has got to me. Being an anime fan, watching your favourite character die horribly is often par the course, so I felt a little ruined in that Game of Thrones couldn't get to me, but damn. :o

When has that ever been stated?

It's a trial by combat. Fight ends when one person dies.

Oberyn is dead and there's nothing you can do about it.

That is how a trial by combat works, even in real life. The first to die is the guilty party. As soon as one party dies, the gods have decided and it's over

Oberyn could have won then been stabbed in the face the next day...doesn't mean Tyrion is guilty.

    This is true.

Saw a brutal one outside the Four Courts over some healthcare sham.

In the UK a guy challenged the DVLA to a trial by combat over a £25 fine.

As has been said, the inevitability of the Mountain winning once the Viper lost his cool almost had me wanting to scream at the TV.

Heart was pounding during the fight. A real legend of a character, wish we'd seen more of him.

I know Tywin has said death but could Tyrion still end up being sent north as part of the white walker story?

And Sansa may not be as dim as before but she's fooling herself if she thinks she got a proper read on Little Finger.

I... i can't.... im so stupid to think was going to have happy ending..

Have a feelin that Hound could die from his bitewound - be nice symmetry if he died same time as Mountain dies fron his wounds..

But I dont want the Hound to die..
Im trying to figure out what good is it for tywin sending that letter about jorah? She is still very strong without him.

They really like the gruesome headshots this season dont they?

It wasn't Tywin that sent the pardon it was King Robert - remember on his death bed he said to Ned that "he was wrong to go after Daenarys" and to undo it

But it was Tywin who arranged for the pardon to be sent to Ser Barristan.

Robert sent a pardon to Jorah back in S1 just before the assassin tried to kill Dany. That's how Jorah knew she was about to be killed, he binned that pardon.

Tywin forged another one from 'Robert' and had it sent directly to Barristan who he knew would act on it.

But isn't it obviously a Tywin plot if it's not sent directly to Davos?

    EDIT: Oops, Jorah.

Fight turned out as I'd guessed, both dead. Wasn't sure what this meant by the trial by combat rules though, so must be first dead is the guilty party.
The Mountain was a total f**king let down TBH. What a lummox. Can't see how The Hound didn't take him apart years ago.
