Snippet on #LFC's interest in Lallana. Appears reported £25m offer a red herring, with bid to #SaintsFC actually less with ludicrous add-ons

    Journo for the Press Association

#saintsfc's reluctance to sell Lallana may have a lot to do with fact that actual guaranteed money offered by #lfc is well short of 25M.

Doing the rounds on twitter at the moment.
    That's a relief if it's true.

I could live with £15m plus add on's up to £25m if they inculde winning the league and CL.

If he helps's with that then he may turn out to be a £25m player.

That makes far more sense - the offer to Barca for Sanchez was reported as £18M, I don't think the club will throw £20M+ at any player without there being performance related add-ons given the Carroll and Downing fiascos.

Did anyone see that ludicrous display last night?

What was Ayre doing putting add-ons in at half time?

All this twitter talk of us being in the running for Cesc, Sanchez et al got me thinking of who was the last truly proven, world class player that we signed. Torres and Suarez both obviously proved to be world class for us but at the time they both had a lot of critics and richer clubs weren't really interested in them. Alonso was relatively under rated in Spain and almost unheard of here. Mascherano was almost world class but was on the West ham bench when we got him. I remember as a kid thinking Collymore was the greatest player round around when we signed him but looking back I'm guessing I may have over rated him...

Any other big names in the last 25 years that I am missing? If not who before then? I would feel very strange about getting in a world class house hold name this summer (but would certainly not be complaining!)

I felt good when we signed Morientes! I can also relate to what you're saying about Collymore!

Truth is if you go back right through Liverpools history you hardly find such players - Dalglish was a star and expensive but no certainty he'd be as good in England, a bit like Suarez before he joined.

Liverpool sign players and make them stars and when they leave its either to a lesser club, on a free and very occasionally to a big club for silly money and that's only happened handful of times - Keegan, Rush, Torres, Alonso, Masch,

Morientes, Litmanen, Ince, Keane, Cole were all arguably still world class at the time they signed for us. They don't all work out.

Sahin, but that was a weird one. Arguably Aquilani too.

    Keane and Cole . . . world class . . . were they ever?

Robbie Keane at the time was highly rated but apart from Suarez and Torres, our only other successful record signings were probably just Beardsley and if you count Rush's return. Heskey and Cisse done a job but I wouldn't count them as being a success, although Cisse was very unlucky with the horrific leg break.

The signing of Lambert kind of reminds me of when we signed Aldridge and I think he's well capable being a good option to have with the extra games.

This is basically what I said the other day but I was shot down by a few on here saying the our 25m bid was reported by reliable journalists.
I think if we had of bid 25m he would be a Liverpool player now.

Good. Makes much more sense if that's true. Was wondering what the hell was going on.

Southampton's reluctance to sell also makes more sense

Absolutely, if he's a big part of us bringing one of the top trophies home then I will take back all I said about signing him for 25m.

He's probably worth about 15m, so no problem giving Southampton an extra big payday of it means we have an important trophy in the cabinet.

Tony Evans at the Times going very bullish on the transfers
LFC will sign Lallana. Unless something amazing happens. So there (from his twitter)

    From Talksport
LFC are going to spend a huge amount of money this summer. At least £70m + player sales. They are really going for it

LFC realise they cannot afford to slip out of the top four again, especially with CL money increasing, so will spend big."

You would wonder how all these ITKs knew so little about the Lambert deal yet claim they know so much about his former team mate Lallana.

I actually think we will spend more with a winger like shaqiri as well as a backup keeper. We could spend close to 100mill and recoup 30 to 40 million. Champion league is vital next year there could be another split in the top six based on qualification and we have to be on board.

Apart from Dalglish, Liverpool has never been in the business of signing the finished article.

In the 1970s, Kevin Keegan was plucked from obscurity and in 1980, the club declined the opportunity to re-sign him. He had twice been named European Footballer of the Year since leaving the club in 1977.

Michael Laudrup was almost signed in 1983 but he was a rising star at the time.

Players that would have been considered world-class before they signed such as Fernando Morientes, Jari Litmanen and Karl-Heinz Riedle were past their best when they joined the club although Riedle had just won the Champions League with Dortmund.

Markus Babel and Harry Kewell are the closest I can think of to players who were in the world-class bracket when they signed for the club and they were both Bosman signings.

Tony evens comes across as bitter since kenny got sacked, he'd have you believe rodgers wanted none of his current signings today, but in fairness the lambert deal wasn't really happening till the other day, must have been one of the quickest transfers we've ever had.

Robbie Keane should never have been signed, but when he had been signed, he should have been given a honest chance.

Seems the club does value Lallana at a more realistic price. I won't be heartbroken if we don't get him.

Aquliani, the great white hope....saw him come on against Ireland, me and mate went and watched the build up to the fight....switched back over and he was on the benhc, looked at each other and ****ing laughed hilariously, what a spoofer

I thought he was the new Xabi. I got 'Aquilani 4' on the back of my shirt that year...

Had a Morientes one too :(

You probably have a Paul Stewart stuck in the back of a drawer too.

He had a very good season with Fiorentina.

He's clearly got talent. Bad injuries and walking into an absolute ****show meant it was always going to be tough for him here.

If it makes you feel better I got 'Cole 10' on mine.

I remember anxiously checking for news that we had signed Joe Cole and being a bit smug when he chose us over Spurs.
    More fool me :(

I weirdly never took to Aquilani and so he was never a massive let down bar the fee paid.

Babel I thought was going to be a top player with us for years and years.

Keane for me was brought in to do a specific job but for whatever reason it never clicked, but I remember a stupid backheel he tried in front if goal during a CL game as being his defining moment with Rafa, as the cameras panned to his face and the look if disgust said it all for me.
