There is no way anyone is going to be handed their jersey back in June, unless they have been playing in at least some of the league games. That is not how Jim Gavin operates. If someone is away rehabbing an injury, or off on club duty, that is one thing. But no one is going to walk straight back into the 20 man, match day squad, if they were away off having a rest. There is too much competition for places for that to happen. If players are fit and available, Gavin usally likes to be playing with as strong a deck as possible, by about rounds 5 or 6 of the league.

I am hoping that the Management use the O'byrne cup and League to develop the squad. I think it would be a worthy sacrifice if at the end of the league we have another goalkeeper, midfielder or 2 to call on and more options coming off the bench. It would be also nice to give some of the lads that have been going year in year out a break like Flynn, Brogan, Cluxton to name but a few.

How do you do that though? If you play 12 or 13 young lads in the same side no one learns anything. The players get nothing from it and manager is the none the wiser for later in the year.

I hear criticism of Gavin for playing the experienced lads a lot in the spring but he's right. Small and Byrne learned heaps as players playing alongside O' Sullivan, Cooper, etc. and the manager sees they can cut it. Would they learn half as much from playing alongside lads even less experienced than they are? No they wouldn't.

Also, the older lads need to play. Putting them out to pasture for 6 months is a terrible idea for them first and foremost.
I mostly agree. I just think that completely abandoning a chance to win the league wouldn't be the most prudent way to go about it.

I've said it in previous posts that I don't want to see Paul Flynn in a Dublin shirt til June. Same goes for Cluxton and Brogan.

I don't get this either. Flynn might need to manage injuries that curtail his participation. I get that...... but if he's injury free the management run the bollox out of him like everyone else in the spring. They play him too. Same for Brogan and Cluxton.

They're all part of the squad and they have to earn the jersey like everyone else in my book.

He did it with Alan Brogan though, surely Bernard and Flynn are in that bracket now too.

TBH, back in 2014 guys like McMahon, Bastic and McCarthy suffered from taking a break, lost their places so you have a point.

Just wondering if anyone knows when the confirmed fixtures for the 2017 leagues will be released. I can only find provisional ones online.

How did CK play for Castleknock or was he playing? I was hoping to get down to see this game but unfortunately family had other plans. :)

He has played or trained very little with the lads in the last year (no different to any of the Dublin squad), so it was difficult for him, but he did well. Given that we have a few training sessions between now and the quarter final, his contribution will improve significantly in the next round.

    Skerries in 1/4's .. no problem ;)

    Also

    BK v Raheny
    Lucan v Vins
    Kilmacud v Judes

Great draw for Skerries and us. We've both avoided one of the big beasts and the winner will be in great shape going into the semi final. Raheny, Lucan and Judes are each capable of overturning their opponents, but the bookies wouldn't really agree.

Two great evenings entertainment in the Neller.:)

    Hurlers got Galway

Footballers got the winner of Carlow v Wexford.

A road trip to Wexford Park would be brill !

Could be an early entry into the qualifiers for the lads after Galway. Few extra games might do them no harm but the performance levels will need to rise drastically.

When are football quarter finals? County Board site does not have them. I assume tomorrow and Sunday?

Will they finish it in time to have Dublin team in Leinster?

That's a fair point - they're chalked in to play Palatines of Carlow on the 13th Nov

    Quarter-finals this week.

Semi-finals the weekend of 27th October?

Final the weekend of 4th November?

That would mean any replays mid-week?

There's quite a few dual players still involved so that could present a problem. Bound to be at least one draw!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

Yeah that looks the most likely scenario, I'd guess the Leinster dates were pencilled in prior to the AI Final and didn't allow for a replay, dunno whether that would mitigate in any discussion that may need to be had - seeing as it set back the club championship a further 2 weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

Shouldn't really be in still in last 16 after AI final anyway.

Big shock tonight in the Neller. Judes took down Crokes.0-14 to 1-8. Although, is it really that big of a shock? Despite their reputation and all their big names, it's been 4 years since Crokes last final appearance. Cian clearly carrying a knock and Mannion kept quiet.

Castleknock bate Skerries in the other semi.

Live commentary of tomorrow nights two games here.

A mate at PP said Castleknock looked very impressive tonight.

I was very impressed with Jude's very organised, marked space very difficult to break down. Proves that the manner of the win in the previous round was no fluke. Even when Jude's were a man down v crokes you wouldn't have known it. Lots of fight and stamina in that team.Mixed with a few man mountains, they will be hard to beat. Kevin Mc was a great "out ball" when they were in trouble.
I thought Skerries gave castleknock a good rattle for a bit of the game until they faded second half. Kilkenny was playing deep for most of the game trying to dictate play.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Great result for us (Castleknock) last night. Lost it a bit in midfield for ten minutes in the first half, but overall I thought we were good value for the win. Our running from deep made life very difficult for the Skerries lads.

Judes were great last night. Big step up in physicality in comparison to the first quarter final. They cleaned out Crokes in midfield, particularly in the first half. Macker was great, but they are in no way a one man team. Their defence, right throughout the team, was very effective. Gave almost all of the Crokes lads a torrid evening. Some very good scores taken as well.

Last night wasn't the first time Judes have taken down a big gun, in the early rounds of the champo. Problem is that they often have a hard time putting good results together back to back.

That's a bit of a paddlin' that Raheny got from Kickhams...2-23 to 1-8. BK mean business this year

Vincents just barely scrape past Lucan. They won't be winning anything this year, on that display !

    Semi final draw:

    Dermo v Philly, Round 3 :D.... Vincents v Ballymun Kickhams, Wednesday Oct 25, @ 7.30pm

    Castleknock v Judes, Thursday Oct 26, @ 7.30pm

Were Raheny really as bad as the scoreline suggests or was Rock as good as the Hoganstand suggests? Wasn't able to make it in unfortunately.

Raheny were awful they only scored 2 points in the second half!
In contrast Ballymun scored 1-11 in the first half and 1-12 in the second half.

The goal Raheny that Raheny scored came against the run of play in the first half out of nowhere a break away type goal.
A few nice points scored by Ivory and Fenton for Raheny are the only things I remember that stood out from the Raheny point of view. Raheny were nowhere near a match for Ballymun physically nevermind any other aspects. Ballymun were given too much space as a result, especially when Raheny tired in the second half, then it was shooting practice.
The real man who caused all the damage to Raheny was Jason Whelan for Ballymun who got five points from play. In fairness though Rock nailed 9 frees.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I think Vincents got caught by surprise and thought they could swagger their way to the semis with little effort and when Lucan put it up to them it focused their minds. Class told in the end.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
