Sooo close to a win for Sam yesterday. I seeing him winning stages. After the mountains.

Yes...he will get over the mountains better than Ewan

Remember this is the most mountainous Tour in a very long time

    See him win on Champs

On a straight line with no headwind he is as fast as Ewan in my book and he knows it

He definitely drifted, it was really obvious. He was at least clear of the others when it started.

Actually quite good analysis of the sprint on the GCN "The Breakaway" I thought.
    • Sam hit the front too early into the head wind
    • Sling shot of coming from behind made Ewan look so much quicker, as Sam faded
    • Ewan took a risk with positioning and his route through - if Sagan wouldn't have had to drift much or sit up and that gap would be gone
    • Sam's drift they just throw away said "you can see him drift as he looked under his arm"
    tomorrow

Personally, I would've been surprised at any DQ for that drift. It was a drift rather than a block.

Do you need the race pass to watch the GCN breakaway?

May be on eurosport, but comes up on the race pass option in the app.

But is Ewan in his head a bit? He's beaten him into 2nd place in 5 of the 6 times they've been head to head / top 2 this year.

I don't think so, he was stronger than Ewan yesterday, he just had to pop out 5 seconds too early

Legs can be perfect, but mightn't matter if heads not there. Probably just takes 1 win though, and he'll be all go

Having Julian in yellow doesn't help him much either really as his team will be all out protecting him you'd think

Yes Sam Bennet is prone to anxiety and self doubt and he alluded to the yellow jersey in the team yesterday as if Team riding for that and not him though didnt say that

Also had a moan about others riding on his wheel and getting benefit of wind protection

Julian was helping with his lead out for a long while so I can't see that.

I don't think it was moaning, just explaining. He would do the same to them if he had the chance.

Is there anything to be said for just sitting on Ewan's wheel and seeing what happens?

Maybe Bennett neeeded more support in the final KM and it wasnt there ?

Moaning was jsuta turn of phrase given his demeanour and voice

Bennett has gained the green jersey today and should keep it at least until Sunday!!!!!

    :D

What about Sam in a rainbow jersey? :)
It is going to have a lot of climbing though!

"UCI President David Lappartient had called for a testing course for the new location to replicate the climbing that was expected in Switzerland. Adorni won on a circuit that included the Tre Monti circuit but further climbing is expected to be added by riding deeper into the Apennines near Riolo Terme. The UCI confirmed that the men’s 259.2km race will include over 5000m of climbing and include nine laps of a 28.8km circuit. "

No indication of a route yet so it could be hilly, but he's won there before !

Oh the dilemma if he is in green in the Tour coming into the last week.

    Possible route

Used to get shouts in the 80's from scrotes......"Who does he think he is, Stephen Kelly?"

Swear to God, passed a bunch of teens in Celbridge this evening and got...."Hey Chris Bennehhh" :D

only 2 more days for Sagan to get 20 + 20 at intermediate sprints by distancing Bennett in early climbs.

If he doesn't do it, it's up to Sam to (just) get past the mountains next week and the green jersey will be his

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,998 ✭✭✭connachta

On the 3 days favorable for Sagan, he didn't take 70, not even 40, but only 25 points to Sam

Now he has to get past big mountain, Thursday is the hardest and Bora will try to put his off-record by imposing a high tempo.

As with 43 points to catch they know they've now lost it except by this way. Come on, hold on Sammy!!!

More like twice the elevation gain of the Tour of Flanders...

I went to the beginning of this thread to see how things have progressed and came across some interesting pieces for rest day consumption, including a doc about his first tour.

He has got a very good chance.....
For the next 2 stages I see Sam and DQS marking Sagan and basically neutralising any attacks.....
I don't see Sagan getting to the end of either stage to get points

Stage 18 could see Bora push hard from the start. Sprint is after 13Km and looks to be Uphill all the way...but might also be a stage the Aagan might try to get to the end....but a lot of climbing in it

    tour-de-france-2020-stage-18-profile-27dd6ea5e6.jpg

Stage 19 has the Sprint with a lot of climbing to get to it......One for Sagan to try and get and possibly get to the finish

    tour-de-france-2020-stage-19-profile-df4c691995.jpg

As I see it (if my maths is right) Sagan really needs to place top 3 in a stage (most likely stage 19 with more points on offer) and also gather at least 2 full points in a Intermediate sprint to have a chance (with Sam not scoring)....And bring it to the Sunday

Bora must be close to píssing off the rest of the peloton at this stage if they keep going all out, with not just Sam and the other sprinters having a tough day.

18 is a scary one in terms of time gaps and Sam will need to be on his toes. Sagan will definitely be looking for the win on stage 19 but most all the other big players in the peleton will be happy with a breakaway as the TT is the next day.

I would say absolute max Sagan will take more than Sam is 60 before Paris but Sam should have the upper hand there and could take back enough for green but more likely he is wearing it going into paris
