With people of that calibre self-announcing, would this mean that there's going to be another announcement from EP?

That would make me a very happy man.

Now in its fourth year, located in the Mindfield arena of Electric Picnic, the Theatre of Food returns with its best ever line-up of chefs, writers, thinkers, artisans, brewers, bakers, and food heroes. It’s a celebration of everything we love about food and drink – and music.

    Food Demos

Come and experience the excitement of celebrity and Michelin-star chefs creating stunning dishes in their wellies, in full Electric Picnic party mode. TV favourite Neven Maguire will showcase the best of ‘modern Irish’ cooking; award-winning Sunil Ghai will demonstrate ‘Indian’ as you’ve never seen it before; Outlier JP McMahon of Aniar will demo the perfect home-cooked fish and chips; and street food pioneer Kevin Pyke of Pyke’n’Pomme’s food truck will bring the nomadic dining experience to life. And that’s just for starters, with many more such as TV chefs Paul Flynn, Martin Shanahan and best-selling cookery author and photographer, Lily Higgins.

    Africa, A Rising Continent

In the spirit of the Mindfield’s 2014 theme, ‘Africa, A Rising Continent,’ Michelin-starred chef from Thornton’s Restaurant in Dublin, Kevin Thornton will give a demo on the foods of the Lalibela region in North Ethiopia. The demo will include injera bread from that region and a recipe from the Hamar Tribe of the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia, using ingredients that have been brought to Ireland especially for the demo at Electric Picnic. Thornton will also present a very special exhibition of his stunning photography from his journey in Ethiopia.
    ?
    Mixology, Drinks and Music

This year, Theatre of Food will host ground-breaking cocktail demos, with champion mixologists Darren Geraghty and Oisín Davis shaking from the frontiers of artisanal distilling and foraged mixers. Join top showbiz mixologist Alan Kavanagh to learn all about the fascinating history and heritage of Bacardi, and taste the aromatic cocktails produced by Paul Lambert from Kinara Kitchen, inspired by the flavours of Pakistani cuisine.

Alan Kavanagh will also present delicious creations at Theatre of Food’s first ‘Music is the Food of Love’ show. On Saturday evening food writer and former Hot Press journalist, John McKenna will talk music with food industry legends Paul Flynn (The Tannery), Kevin Thornton (Thornton’s), Declan Maxwell (Chapter One), Joe Macken (Jo’ Burger et al), and Hot Press editor Niall Stokes. Music is the Food of Love, so the audience will groove along with these famous names of food and music, to the best sounds of the 60s, 70s, 80s and now.

    Theatre of Food “Tastes”

All weekend, the tent will be staging ‘Theatre of Food Tastes,’ treating the audience to delicious tastings of exciting foods almost every hour. The Theatre of Food Kitchen will be orchestrated by award-winning chef Caitlin Ruth from Deasy’s Harbour Bar in West Cork, and the audience will hear from the innovative producers, chefs and bakers behind the tastings, such as: cocktails with Newgrange Gold; a ‘Taste of Nepal’ from Lina Gautam of Monty’s of Kathmandu; delectable cakes from Eunice Power; frozen delights from Chilly Moo, African curry from Michael Quinn.

In addition there will be a number of side shows, which will include a full Ethiopian coffee ceremony, the icing of a magnificent wedding cake by Diva Boutique Bakery, and ice cream beers in a very alternative afternoon tea.

The Demos and Tastes at Theatre of Food this year are brought together in association with Musgraves.

    Digital Food

The return of the Electric Picnic Food Awards will see the popular Picnicers’ Award. This year picnicers are invited to tweet a photograph of their favourite meal at the Picnic, and the winning food photograph will be judged during a special food photography talk when Le Cool magazine will be dropping in to talk food porn with Forkful TV.

Talks, Manifestos and a Food Quiz

Alongside the food photography workshop with Le Cool and Forkful TV, Theatre of Food will host a series of debates and talks, including a quiz - The Missing Ingredient – hosted by Ross-Golden Bannon and some very special guests, including singer Brian Kennedy and style icon Sonya Lennon. A Manifesto for Irish food will be debated by Galway’s ground-breaking chef, Jess Murphy whose Kai Restaurant is one of the hottest West Coast tickets, Milleens Cheese-maker Quinlan Steele – Milleens began the Irish Farmhouse cheese revolution in the 1970s and still remains at the forefront of Irish cheese production – and TV chef, teacher and baker Patrick Ryan of Firehouse Bakery.

    The Theatre

The Theatre of Food takes place in a magnificent tent, pitched in the Mindfield area of Electric Picnic, this year with its own country market. The tent is equipped with a magnificent kitchen, designed and custom-made for Theatre of Food by Portlaoise craftsman, Liam Grant Wood Design.
The Theatre will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Theatre of Food is produced by VSC Events, and curated by McKennas’ Guides.

There are showers. Expect a huge queue in the morning. Maybe hottish water. Can't remember if they charge for them but it wasn't much if so. Also because some people seem to mention it every time they're not communal. It ain't the 60's kids.

The off license is something like 70 for 24 cans and I don't think they do smaller orders. Much cheaper bringing your own and you won't get much selection at the festival. No spirits for one.

Thanks for the reply, expected there would be huge queues but a shower in the morning would be a gamechanger! Warm trays of cans in the boot of the car I reckon

Anyone know what way the wristbands work out when youre in the campervan area and have driven over the thursday night.

From what I understand from others, you dont get them till the friday morning so I'm guessing we just head out to the normal entrance and get them?

The reason i'm curious is one of the guys is coming over the thursday night but isnt staying in the campervan with us for the weekend, only the thursday night.

I don't think we are allowed to discuss that kind of thing here. I am getting quite thirsty for a Capri Sun though. In particular one of the ones in the 300ml re-sealable pouches with the cap. They're quite nice.

Baby wipes, soap, water and towel works a treat, did it in the car park Sunday last year, wouldn't bother with the showers.

On the beer, try a combination of this https://twitter.com/epcountdown/status/483925388125827072 & bring freezer bags, buy ice in the shop or bring it with you. Throw the beers in and hey presto! Living it up like royalty!!
(Ps you don't want to be putting warm beers into the ice/freezer bag, the ice won't last too long, the hypothermic foil over the pre cooled beers will keep them relatively chilled, add to the freezer bag as needed)

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,539 ✭✭✭ghostdancer

great idea! how long would they keep cold for?

a very lazy way to chill cans is to bring a freezer bag (or even double up 2 black-sacks), and put a few litres of cold water from the campsite taps in there, then throw in the cans for a while. won't be ice-cold or anything, but much more drinkable than warm cans.

friend of mine brings various bits and pieces in a coolbox rather than a bag, then just empties the stuff into the tent when it's setup and re-fills the coolbox with cold water and cans throughout the weekend.

Yea the cold water would work a treat also!!

I did the foil last year, chilled the cans almost to freezing point before wrapping, even on Sunday they were still relatively cold in the car boot (perfectly drinkable). Constantly checking and opening the foil will let warm air in so don't open the foil until ur ready to drink.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I find that if I leave my cans in the tent's porch overnight, they chill nicely. Then I move them into the main part of the tent when I wake up and try keep them in whatever part of the tent is in the shade. Keeps them at around 9 or 10 degrees which is perfect and suits my natural inclination to be lazy :)

What about lining a coolbox with that foil? Would that maintain the ice in the box for longer than usual I wonder?

No need really. Cold cans put into a coolbox and then throw in a bag of ice on top of the cans. The beer will easily stay fridge cold for the weekend.

As mentioned previously, the key is to start with cold cans first and then add the ice, otherwise the warm cans will just melt the ice.

Ah you wouldn't get enough cans in a coolbox to last one night, let alone a whole weekend. I've always just brought in a couple of slabs and a coolbox full of ice (and sausages). Put a few cans at a time into the box to cool them down, but of course that melts the **** out of the ice.

What if I ate the foil before drinking?

I'm a EP virgin.. so would be helpful if someone could provide a quick run down of the camping sites and their location/noise levels etc...

You'd have to see a map. Even one from last year would help, as the layout is pretty much the same.

The campsites furthest from the arena are quietest (doh), Jimi Hendrix is mayhem. Oscar Wilde is pretty ok to camp in.

A lot will depend on the weather and how much rain falls the week before. Wellingtons, black sacks to keep clothes dry & other stuff, drugs (as in hangover, dioralyte, tummy tablets etc.), baby wipes, a warm sleeping bag. Typical stuff. Rain jacket or poncho, if wet, then bring plenty of dry socks.

Well you do have Supervalu in the town to buy drink.

If you have the freezer bag with ice. Would covering the can with a wet kitchen towel, and putting it on the ice cool it quickly?

That does of course depend on the size of your coolbox, ahem......and how much beer you'd need for a night. ;)
