Yes I did and no I don't but I know most of them over there. I know the lad that is leaving and I also know that 1 lad dropped out in week 11 of training.

Any further word on a potential class making it's way into the Airport?

From speaking to one or two lads up there from the last class it's not all it's cracked up to be. I think one might even be leaving.

    Do tell!!
I imagine it would be very quiet with incidents, but that is to be expected with aviation firefighting.

Might be a bit boring sitting on the runway all day.

Really? Why is that? Lack of action?
I always thought Airport fire service would be a great career but now I'll never know as I'm starting dfb next month.

Guys, the Airport Fire Service is just like any other fire service, except they specialise in Aviation Emergencies.

The Local Authority Fire Services don't get fires and emergencies every hour of the day. They come in waves, similar to the airports.

    The difference between the airport is that they operate additional duties as part of their job. These include and are not limited to;

    24-7 Airfield Patrol
    Bird-scaring & Wildlife Control
    Wildlife Control
    Runway & Airfield Inspections
Watchroom duty (Control Room for AFS)
    Weather Standby
Hot Refuelling Standby for Aircrafts such as the ICG Helicopter
    Runway Friction Testing
    Runway Water Depth checking

These are all additional to the normal activities of a fire station.

Out of curiosity how often would a crew actually fight a real fire that is not part of a training excercise.

Friend of mine is long serving member of airport fire service, his information is that they will be recruiting early in 2017, could be as late as Feb/March and they won't be scrapping panel as it's too costly and time consuming. It's his opinion that several on panel 1-10 will have gone to dfb or will be unavailable.
    FYI

Let's just hope what I have heard is true sounds convincing considering they extended the panel.... I think the starting salary is between 25k-28k not sure what this includes as I have heard its on a personal contract basis but I'm not 100% on this untill the offer comes from HR I know personally if I get the job offer il be taking it regardless of the money.

I was told it was E32,500 starting off. I was told this during the recruitment process last year.
